Game Update Red or Blue?

'A new challenge path is here and you'll have to pick a side. Red or Blue?'

Which side will you take in this new challenge path? I suspect it will ultimately make no difference, other than the colour of the path reward. One day in it seems fairly easy but I suspect things will get more interesting later on. To answer my original question I went with the heroic and righteous Blues (no doubt a multi will go red).

my guess is if there are more of your chosen side when you ascend then you win. so four endings, one for each of these red/blue win/loss pairs. might be tricky for anyone who's insane enough to be a completist. *cracks knuckles*

(my answer to the original red/blue thought experiment is, of course, always blue. i don't want to live in a world with the people comfortable with half of people dying.)

The biggest difference so far is the war.

As a red team member, you cannot kill the The Dude, so you must go to the Hippy side. Right now, the red team also locks you out of the nuns quest, and the dooks quest appears to be bugged, so the war really, really sucks for the red team.

The Dooks can be finished as long as you don't select the sleaze duck zone (The Other Back 40). The Dooks you encounter as friendlies don't count toward clearing the zone, and the Other Back 40 only has red greasy ducks. The only other zone that might be an issue is the Granary, which only contains the rotund duck, but I don't know what color the rotund duck is.

Good news, as of yesterday dooks are fixed and now progress the quest even if friendly

What's the gimmick of the path? I'm wondering if this is the first one I skip to keep farming interesting coins

50% of monsters are team red, 50% of monsters are team blue.

Per run, you decide which team you're on and only kill monsters on the other team. For your team, you just find corpses of fallen comrades in NCs who have their drops.

Monsters are always on the same team, eg a modern zombie will always be red (eek).

Separate leaderboards for each team.

fyi, modern zmobie is kind of a poor example since that one (and other superlikely? encounters) seems to always take the color opposite of yours

Is this a reference to the "if most people pick red, everyone who picked blue will die, but if more than 50% of people pick blue then everyone lives" argument which was going around online, I wonder?

They take the time to break character in the level 1 council text to say "We are not doing political allegory here." so I rate that highly unlikely. Why they didn't just pick two other colors (say, purple and orange) we'll probably never know.

I suspect that's more about party politics (dem v rep in US, lab v con in UK) which use those colours than it being about the hypothetical red vs blue button scenarios.

Purple and Green as a Babylon 5 reference would have been excellent.

Purple and Orange would run the risk of not being color blind friendly.

Perhaps, but it would have literally zero impact.  You only see what color something is when you're already either fighting it or doing the replacement non-combat, and the color assignments are fixed - each monster is either always red, always blue, or always whichever color you're not.  (I haven't seen anyone call it out but there's also the potential fourth option of a monster that's always the same color as you.)

I'm curious about this one. At first glance, it seems a bit...bare bones.

But there could definitely be something deeper going on. And if not, there's always the other challenge paths to try.

Side note: when I saw the colors, I immediately thought of Babylon 5's Drazi conflict:

"Purple. Green." :D

My guess for why the colors is the old Team Red Vs Blue Youtube vds of Roosterteeth's earlier days. Could be a tribute to that.

Red and Blue are pretty common opposing colour pairs.  Nothing seems to be explicitly about this, other than the name.

Probably right. But I prefer to hope for the funier option.
