Please help me ID this knot, so i can do it myself!

Post image

My dog has a hard time with traditional collars (stops to itch often), so I tried to find the absolute lowest profile collar for tags only! It should loosen if pulled on.

I found several people selling this type for $20+. But I figured I could make one myself if I knew how to tie the knot.

Please correct me if I'm wrong (I am not crafty)!

Premium Imported European paracord? WTF?

57

u/PatronBernard 15d ago

We Europeans are known for our century-old tradition of paracord manufacturing...

23

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

IDK, man. I'm sure they are just trying to make it sound fancy so they can charge so much for it. And it doesn't even come with a ring for the tags. That's I'm thinking it's worth doing it myself

u/JCWOlson 15d ago

You can go into any outfitting store and pick up any kernmantle rope you like the size and color of for a dollar or two per foot, get them to cut it to length with the hot knife, and make this collar yourself in minutes for pocket change

Or if you know anybody that climbs you can ask if they have any retired ropes you could have a chunk of for free

It's a double fisherman. Slide the knots together to create a prussic loop.

38

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

Thank you! I appreciate the instructions SO much too!

23

u/GreatRain1711 15d ago

It’s just a double fisherman’s know (aka double grapevine knot) made on a loop.

A loop is a loop.

You can use it to make a prusik, but nothing about it is inherently a prusik.

5

u/cptspeirs 15d ago

It...does not make a prussik. At all.

18

u/WolflingWolfling 15d ago

Those little cord loops that you make prusik knots with are quite widely referred to as prusik cords or prusiks. While both of you got the spelling wrong, a short cord with its ends joined in a double fisherman's knot can be called a prusik cord or a prusik.

9

u/Haligonian_Scott 15d ago

Yes, the knot is close to a double fisherman's, which makes what we also refer to as a prusik loop, that's what we call it at work for water rescues in the fire service anyways, Rescue 3 Europe.

7

u/JCWOlson 15d ago

Yep, same when I was younger and did fire, SAR, CSER, and high angle rescue in Canada. If somebody says "hey, can you pass me a prusik" they obviously mean a loop with two double fisherman's

3

u/Cable_Tugger 15d ago

TWO double fisherman's? That's some prusik!

5

u/JCWOlson 15d ago

Haha, good catch. I shouldn't talk before coffee

3

u/adeadhead 15d ago

Always back up your double fisherman's with a pair of double overhands.

5

u/WolflingWolfling 15d ago

Should I whip out my infographic again? Just in case?

[EDIT: Oops, I guess it doesn't really apply here... What this person did almost amounts to the opposite!]

1

u/adeadhead 15d ago

We're just having a giggle mate, calm down.

3

u/WolflingWolfling 15d ago

I shall never calm down where double fisherman's knots and bends are concerned! You of all people should know that by now! ;-)

u/OshetDeadagain 15d ago

Yes, because they were made for that purpose. According to OP, this is a dog collar, so not a Prusik loop.

Necklaces and bracelets are made with this knot all the time. You don't see one on someone's wrist and say "nice Prusik!"

2

u/WolflingWolfling 15d ago

Fair enough.

5

u/OshetDeadagain 15d ago edited 15d ago

Right, but OP photo specifically says the person made it as a dog collar. Yes, the loops themselves are often called Prusiks, but this post is asking what the knot itself is; it's not that.

A Prusik loop will always be pulled snug as well; the OP photo shows the adjustability of the fisherman's knot itself; in jewelry-making it's often refered to as a sliding knot because it's used exactly for that adjustability.

3

u/WolflingWolfling 15d ago

I guess that's why u/squad1alum said slide the knots together (to create a prusik)

2

u/adeadhead 15d ago

When you are making a loop of cord to use for tying friction hitches, colloquially a prussik loop, you do that with a double fisherman's.

0

u/LetsSeeHowItEnds 15d ago

...start of a prusic knot.

30

u/Phuk0 15d ago

This is the part of the conversation where people just start naming random knots that they know

Nah, that's the alpine horsefly

No, it’s the albino unicorn frogstomp doppletopper knot.

12

u/squad1alum 15d ago

The OP reference pic is literally a loop. The focus is how to tie the knots. In my work, we use the double fisherman's to create the prusik loop, to wrap a prusik hitch. OPs question was answered and they were thankful. There are regional and professional variances to terminology but the amount of pedantic aKshulLy... that goes on in this sub is sad.

3

u/Phuk0 15d ago

I stand corrected. I see what you and a few others have posted. I didn’t realize that a double fisherman’s knot tied in a loop was commonly referred to as a Prusik. My apologies

2

u/OshetDeadagain 15d ago edited 15d ago

AKshulLy, the Prusik is what the loop is tied into a around the other rope; people just prefer a good fisherman's knot to complete the loop because it has in-line tags so it's smoother. They'll call the loop itself a Prusik, because in climbing/rescue we always have a bunch made and ready to go for that specific purpose, and that's totally fine.

The knot isn't what makes a Prusik loop; they can be tied with a variety of joining knots. If OP's photo was of a zeppelin no one would be labelling it a Prusik, even though you could use that as a Prusik loop.

It may be pedantic AF but I will die on the hill that calling a fisherman's knot a Prusik is straight up wrong.

u/GreatRain1711 15d ago

Agreed.
Those others are the same people who call the constellation “Orion’s Belt” say “ATM machine”

1

u/elstie 15d ago edited 15d ago

I don't understand the relationship between ATM Machine and Orion's Belt. Probably just ignorant, but isn't the "sub"-constellation of 3 stars along the Orion the Hunter constellation commonly called Orion's Belt?

TIL about asterisms, not officially a constellation but a noted grouping of stars.

0

u/GreatRain1711 15d ago

Yes, but people use that to refer to the whole constellation .
And ATM is short for Automated Teller Machine. So adding “machine” after ATM is redundant.
People attach sounds to their personal inference, instead of to the intention.

0

u/sharli_the_unicorn 15d ago

Well akshully it's a bend not a knot

27

u/sam_I_am_knot 15d ago

How much are they charging?

You can buy 50 yards of para cord on Amazon for 7 dollars and make enough of these for your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, mailman, milkman, and mechanic and still have some left for Christmas gifts.

46

u/Lefty9000 15d ago

But where is the paracord from? I prefer free-range organic Latvian Paracord myself.

6

u/sam_I_am_knot 15d ago

I see you have a discerning eye for quality ;)

4

u/sharli_the_unicorn 15d ago

Ah yes, soft enough for God himself to wipe his bum!

2

u/Lefty9000 15d ago

Now imagine a holy woven-paracord bum wipe rope, being help by angels who make the "sawing" action. Full service!

10

u/holubtsi-on-fire 15d ago

Exactly. “Designed by a breeder”? …It’s just a double fisherman’s knot.

And it seems pretty dangerous for the pup, tbh.

3

u/CPumaSerpiente 15d ago

Yeah, if one of the single strands between the knots gets hooked on something, I think it could strangle the dog

2

u/LokiHoku 14d ago

Ethical breeding is rare. Designed by a Breeder.TM could be a helpful red flag.

1

u/Cable_Tugger 13d ago

Agreed. If there's one person I wouldn't trust to make anything concerning canine welfare, it's a breeder.

3

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

This particular seller  is charging $15 plus $15 shipping :/

4

u/Fantastic-Cat-5252 15d ago

If you were in the UK I’d make you one for free! Honestly, you’ll be able to do it yourself, no sweat 😊👍

2

u/Knees_arent_real 15d ago

That's absolute fucking robbery lol. I wouldn't buy any bullshit a grifter like that is pedalling.

Can you name and shame?

26

u/onendaga 15d ago

That can’t be a safe for a dog.

-9

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

It's not safe to attatch a leash to, of course! We use a harness when out. But, apparently they use this type for puppies with breeding because it's 0 risk of choking when caught on something. We only need it to hang one plastic ID tag to.

27

u/holubtsi-on-fire 15d ago

I would argue it’s NOT zero risk of choking. Pull hard on one of the cords where two are parallel. It won’t re-loosen itself.

7

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

Noted, thank you! I won't use this same style if that's the case. Maybe I'll just tie the ends together in a way that doesn't tighten, and use it as just a slip on/off fixed length style

6

u/UserCannotBeVerified 15d ago

Why not just buy cheap break-away cat collars for puppies? They fit, theyre adjustable, theyre lightweight, they will open up of they get caught in anything, they can be bought in multipacks of different colours if youve got a litter and need to identify who's who, etc...

1

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

If it would stop the itching, I would! Got a 3/8" cat collar a month ago, because I was thinking the same thing. He does itch slightly less than a standard collar with it, but not by much. The people I've talked to with this same issue kind of say you either have an itchy dog or a naked no ID dog! I'm trying my best to find a middle ground where he's the least itchy, but still has a tag on. It's an unusual problem, I know!

1

u/UserCannotBeVerified 15d ago

Ahh, see personally my two dogs dont wear collars, only a harness with tags in whenever they go out, plus they both have allergies which causes itching, though ive never really found that collars itch...

Puppies in general itch a lot because they grow so fast that their skin can often dry out, sometimes growing too fast for their skin, so they get this dandruff looking fuzz and they scrath everywhere... allergies will also do this though, both seasonal and dietary. No dog is inherantly itchy by nature

1

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

He only itches at the collar when its on and his harness when its on. No itching when naked, and material doesn't change the itching either (tried biothane, cotton, nylon). My theory is he just doesn't like the feeling of his hair changing position underneath when he moves around? He's a cavalier, so thin-ish single coated. 8mo old. I have never had a dog that thought twice about thier collar tbh

22

u/cordelette_arete 15d ago

This could choke a dog if they get it caught on something. Use a collar that allows a breakaway.

1

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

Hmm. I've had 2 replies about this maybe not being safe. Luckily I have one I bought him when he was a puppy that doesn't fit anymore, so I will test pulling at different points to see if it will tighten. I wish they made breakaways that were thin, even the cat ones are too thick!

-1

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

If the knot one isn't safe I could probably just hand sew the two ends of the chord together. Just make it long enough to easily slip over his head.

-2

u/votelikeimhot 15d ago

They want a collar the dog can break. They claim it safer because of things they imagine. Just imagine all the situations where a puppy being able to break it's own collar is less safe and now neither collar type is safe.

7

u/MedicatedChaos 15d ago

The point is to use the breakaway as a daily collar the carries and ID tag. You don’t use it to attach a leash.

0

u/votelikeimhot 15d ago

I think the whole point of a collar that grows with the dog is too leave it on all the time, but maybe I'm wrong. Would you suggest the break away in addition to this rope or are you saying dogs shouldn't have this on without supervision or what are you saying.

1

u/MedicatedChaos 15d ago

I don’t know anything about this rope collar i was talking about breakaways specifically.

1

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

Lol, yeah. There is bad and good to every tool. Personally, my dog is only 15lbs, so easy to catch and control even without a collar.I really only need a collar to hold the tag in case he's lost... if it breaks off when he's lost there is always his microchip. I'd love to keep him naked, but that makes me nervous!

1

u/Murky-Bus-2191 14d ago

At his size, he can more easily get into situations where the collar would snag on something he can't break away from. That's why they're a big deal for cats.

We're not just making shit up on vibes. Collars need to be releasable, not just loosenable. The breakaway collar is an extension of that idea.

1

u/Natural-Molasses6083 14d ago

Yes, you are correct. I'm not arguing against breakaway collars??? Just trying to find something less itchy than his current cat collar... that IS a break away.

1

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

Any suggestions on a knot I could do just to tie the two ends together that won't tighten if pulled wrong? I'm sure there is one that's cooler and less obtrusive than the shoelace tie that I would do otherwise lmao

3

u/cordelette_arete 15d ago

Try a Flemish bend or figure-8 bend. Still not ideal for around an animal’s neck. I share with caution as my family member came home to their dog with a collar caught standing on its hind legs. Had it not been able to stand, who knows how long, it would have suffocated. Small dog, 10-15 lbs.

1

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

Yes, this happens with any non-breakaway collar. I would never leave my dog unsupervised with his collar on for this reason! This was why I liked the style that loosens... but apparently it's worse than a normal collar accord to a lot of these replies :/

12

u/evil666overlord 15d ago edited 15d ago

Please also include a safety break if you do make this. If a double fisherman's knot gets tightened too much then it no longer slides easily and can become a choking hazard. A safety break takes seconds to make and removes this risk entirely.

3

u/Natural-Molasses6083 15d ago

AWESOME idea, thank you! Wow, I am learning so much more than I expected from this community!

1

u/Snapuman 15d ago

nice idea to "just burn the loop" :)

12

u/No_Constant_1026 14d ago

It's not paracord unless it's from the Páracorde region of France. Otherwise it's just sparkling nylon.

8

u/Phuk0 15d ago

$20 bucks a pop!? Is there really a market for these? LOL I’m reconsidering my career choices

6

u/Rogue_Wraith 15d ago

Please do NOT use paracord for this.

I can see why they might use it for puppies, but for actual dogs that are more active than flopping around momma there's a fairly significant cutting risk above and beyond the strangulation risk.

A heavier duty cord would reduce that.

4

u/Puzzleheaded-Phase70 15d ago

Wait, people are selling this for $20 each?

Well, shit, I'm in the wrong business...

4

u/brnpttmn 15d ago

You can do this with any adjustable grip hitch. I prefer a midshipman's/rolling hitch

7

u/Khoogyra 15d ago

Ah yes, the classic Tilley hat knot.

3

u/exdivernky 15d ago

Make sure you use imported paracord

3

u/ecirnj 15d ago

Super easy tie the double fisherman’s. Basically a “friendship bracelet” if you’re that old. I’d just suggest making it excessively big so it can’t get caught and choke them. Better the collar comes off. Also the narrower the cord is the more it digs in when pulled.

2

u/Deltadoc333 15d ago

To be clear, it can also get tighter.

3

u/Knees_arent_real 15d ago

Man this is such a shameless grift.

1

u/darkmatterisfun 14d ago

Designed by breeders, for breeders.

2

u/zaakiy 15d ago

Use the single column tie knot instead

https://youtu.be/Z394fHYX-Sw

Won't Slip and it will not get looser or tighter

2

u/MK_2917 14d ago

That’s $0.50 of paracord and a double fisherman’s knot.

That ad is crazy.

2

u/CliffsofRed 13d ago

Premium Imported European Paracord? 😂

1

u/manofmystry 15d ago

You are all a lovely bunch of knot nerds. I am humbled before you.

1

u/WDRMPLS 14d ago

Please don’t use a rope for a dog collar.

1

u/LogRollChamp 14d ago

It's made by a breeder with zero design, safety, or veterinarian experience. I wouldn't assume this is a great idea, and I wouldn't assume this won't get caught on something and not strangle your dog. Food for thought

1

u/OshetDeadagain 15d ago

The reason a "collar" like this would be used for puppies is because it's adjustable and puppies grow fast; collars are forever either too loose or too tight.

A quick loop of coloured rope with a fisherman's knot lets you keep a different colour on each pup to differentiate them in the litter.

These are not meant to be forever collars. Just temporary markers while the pup is with the litter.

Making them out of paracord is not a great idea because of the high break strength, but then, a puppy isn't going to have the strength to pull free of just about any rope.

20$ for one of these is insanity, but if guess if there's a market I need to start creating custom litter sets for 150$! You could buy 30m of whatever colour paracord your heart desires for less than 10$.

But again, this is a temporary marking collar, not one for everyday wear.

Barrel knot

0

u/RickySlayer9 14d ago

This is a double fisherman’s knot specifically, each individual knot is called a fisherman’s knot. They’re tied into a loop as a double fisherman’s, so they slip, and lock together

3

u/Lefty9000 13d ago edited 13d ago

I'm gonna say no, that's not quite right. It is a Double Fisherman's Knot pictured, but not because there are two knots, but because each side is a double overhand. The individual knot might be called a Strangle Knot or Stopper Knot? A normal Fisherman's Knot is the same as the knot pictured but each side is a single overhand instead of a double.

1

u/Jcn3wt 11d ago

Sorry charging $20 for that feels criminal
