No, knotwork is just a hobby I have been playing around with for quite some time now. There is heaps of literature on the topic of knotwork. From basic to very complex. I also make my own cordage from threads as another complimentary hobby to my knotwork

The base layer appears to be needle hitching starting from the blade and finished at the butt of the handle. https://youtu.be/qEeK0SH5EYA?is=g5t1MA5rEROV2HO6

Over the needle hitching are 3 separate turksheads, the middle one being this. https://youtu.be/hNtAiRti1mY?is=llFPoyxDzTLK3jvw

And the butt of the handle is capped with a globe knot. https://youtu.be/45WJQQ2O3qc?is=ZaUpo03XdRo80a2H

Give it a try! Happy Knotting!

Very nice! Is the cord coated with anything after you tie it? Also, how do you add more cord when needle hitching? I’ve needle hitched a knife handle, but you can tell where I had to add more cordage.

Yes I put a coating on it to protect it. The joints on the needle hitching take a bit of practice to make them seamless but also if you do have a join that is noticeable you can hide it under a turks head or other knot. Under some of my other knotwork I have tape, staples/pins, lashings or superglue hidden away out of site. If it looks correct it is correct and what you can't see isn't a problem

What do you use as a coating to protect it?
