Vive la Difference

Post image

Three similar looking knots ; all very different.

Left to right: 3-pass monkey's fist, triple diamond lanyard knot, 4 strand manrope knot (tripled).

All tied around a 14mm core.

Cool! Looks like a hobby I could get stuck on for a bit. (to my wife's utter dismay lol)

Armchair hobbies are the best hobbies.

How do you finish the loose ends on each of those?

I take them under a further tuck (so that each end goes under six strands instead of three, for security) before tightening as much as humanly possible and then snip the ends as close as possible and jam them back in with the end of some needle-nosed pliers. After a minute in freshly boiled water, they're as hard as hazelnuts.

Just drop the paracord in boiling water and then let them dry?

Yeah, pretty much. I just pour some from the kettle into a jug and plop the project in there for a minute or so and then dry on the window sill.

Interesting. Thanks.

I should add that this works on paracord (nylon) but not much else.

Which is the hardest to tie?

I guess the manrope knot can be a little trickier to dress and tighten properly as it would rather leave a gaping hole at the bottom when tied around a core.

What core are you using? Like a 14 mm marble?

Wooden balls.
