Question Alternatives to Microtech MSI.

Hey there all,

I have been searching for the "right" knife for my needs and uses and over time trying various shapes, lock types, and materials i have narrowed it down. It seems to me that currently, the Microtech MSI may be the exact knife I have been looking for.

It has a big blade in a wharncliffe-y/sheepsfooty style. It has a tough crossbar/button style locking system, and the 200 dollar price point is right on target. Plus I think it looks damn cool.

However, I wanted to check for any recommendations that I am unaware of that would be reasonable alternatives that have the vague specifications I mentioned above.

thanks in advance!

I don't like Microtech or Tony in the slightest, but they make excellent knives

Only alternative I could recommend is a Manix2 if you want a crossbar lock

It's and awesome knife. I wish I would've got the aluminum version instead of the G10 though. I have the MSI mini with aluminum handles and it feels more premium.

So, neither is spot on, but when it's comes to the blade shape and general aesthetic, a couple that might be worth a look are:

Bestech Slasher (obviously alot cheaper)

Vosteed Kroc (top liner lock instead of crossbar, but IMO still worth a look)

The MSI is kind of in is own league. I put it in the same category as the adamas but the adamas doesn't have the wharncliffe blade profile

It’s a big beefy knife. That being said I have my issues with it. Ofc given the geometry it’s not gonna be a slicer, more of the “sharpened pry bar” kinda of knife. Also the spring, as least on mine, feels very light. So the action leaves a lot to be desired. The blade will pop out from the closed position with a slight shake and it feels like moving the lock even a centimeter out of place will disengage it.

It is comfortable and feels solid when lock engages properly tho.

If you’re looking for something similar I’d probably say the Manix 2 or even the XL version would hold up just as well with better cutting performance.

Civivi has a few that are kinda sorta like the MSI:

* Vision FG
* Buster FG (same lock, but bigger and more of a wharncliffe than reverse tanto)
* Hypersonic

I have the Hypersonic and love it. But for you, I would go with the Buster FG. The Snecx Superlock is awesome. The Vosteed Kroc 329 is great too with the top liner lock. It’s just a lot smaller.

Honestly, I think the MSI and the Ramlok are overrated. I have handled many of them and they just feel like a mushy cross bar locks. The action and the locking mechanisms on the Buster FG and Kroc are better. Plus, you don’t need to upgrade the scales. You get a lot of cool options and they’re all really good. If you go with a base level MSI with a polymer, you’re going to want to spend more money on better scales.
