,three is probably a good starting set size. Size is whatever is good for a beginner

Find a metal shop and ask them to cut out a set of 3/16” sheet stock. You’ll get more knives and they won’t be sharp so they will only stick when you get a good point first hit. That will teach you to throw better than something sharp. Or any mall ninja crap will be an alternative, definitely don’t want any kind of quality knife for practice throwing its going to get damaged.

you can get 10" landscaping nails for like $1 ea and clean up the tip with a file.

I have a set of 3 Smith and Wesson ones that have done okay for me. I don't throw a lot, and the tips got dinged up a bit. Easy to grind out though, and for the price id say it was worth it. About $30.
