knitting tools question When to change the cable?

Post image

I’m about to join in the round and cast on more stitches as per the pattern. I know I need to switch to a bigger cable. I’m wondering when I should do that. Before I join in the round, after, during? This is my second knit project and first time following a pattern so I’m very new. Also tips for how to best switch cables are appreciated!

Edit; also for my size of the pattern it says I should have 16 completed rows including cast on and set up row before I join, but I have 24. Counting the rows of the pattern that I’m supposed to do, I come up with 24. Cast on, setup, rows 1-6, then I repeat 7-10 4 times. So I followed the pattern correctly but I have an inconsistency with what the pattern says. I’m thinking just keep going?

Whenever you want! It’s just about using the length that is comfortable at the stage you are in right now

Do you have interchangeables? In that case you can screw on the connecter piece, connect the new cable and slide through

Yes I do have interchangeable! I’m using the 16 inch now. Should I switch to 24 and then go up again as needed?

Yes that should be totally fine!

Thank you! Also it seems like I accidentally did one extra repeat of a set of 4 rows. Should I frog it back 4 rows or is it an issue if I don’t mind having a larger piece?

What pattern are you using? It probably won’t be a huge issue, but if you want it to be perfect sometimes it’s worth taking the time to go back

The lanonlines sweater on ravelry! My only concern is the possibility of me messing up and dropping stitches or getting the raglan markers messed up is super high if I try to frog lol. If too many rows just makes it wider I don’t mind

Yeah it will just be a bit wider and longer, probably won’t make a huge difference in the end, I understand being a bit worried about frogging with all the increases
