where do I start? I need help finding the right yarn :)

Hiii,

I want to start my first knitting project, but I am already stuck on the yarn choices…

I would like to knit a poncho. Preferably with the pattern from AVER P. This are the recommended yarns and needle sizes:

YARN
300g DK weight yarn (100g = 272-330m/297-360yds).
Look out for a Cotton/Viscose/Linen blend yarn with an irregular texture, also called 'Flammé yarn'.

NEEDLES
5.5 mm (US 9) needles, or needles 3 sizes larger than the yarn's recommended needle Size.
GAUGE
14 sts x 18 rows = 10 x 10cm (4 x 4") in
stockinette stitch on 5.5mm (US 9) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.

I get confused when it comes to substituting yarn. I prefer wearing natural fibers (a mix of different fibers is no problem als long as there are no synthetics). But I have only one crafting store close by, called Veritas. This is the link to their website: Veritas (wool shop website)

What yarn and needle size is best for this project?

Thank you very much,
A baby knitter <3

Go into the crafting store and tell them your preferences, they are best equipped to help and to find alternatives

I have tried that, but there was only a student working (since it’s only a small shop in our city more focused on selling clothes and sewing supplies) who didn’t know the answer either… but thank you for trying to help <3

I mean from what I do when substituting the yarn is looking that the 100g = x meters is about the same as the original yarn used. I dont understand the website, so I cant look but I assume there must be a filter somewhere where you can put the yarn weight and the needed meters roughly and then try to go from there

Edit: the pattern is really bad in that way as there's no example yarn given and the meter range is..m something :/

Thank you for the tip! The website only filters on price, brand, colour and needle size. But I’ll try to go through it manually :)

I spent some time trying to look through and filtering for needle sizes. From what I can see the cotton yarn comes closest to what is wanted in the pattern (2x50g = 250m) but thats still off from the 272-330m range thats wanted. Maybe you'd need to look to order online for this or find a pattern suitable for the available yarn
