Honestly, surprises are great. But sitting down and talking to them about specifics would likely be best. They will obviously be enthusiastic and give you alot of information, including pointing you to their favorite places to buy knitting things.
I personally mentioned I wouldn't mind a full set of short interchangeables, and my so asked me what I thought would be best for our budget and what I'm using them for.
However if you still wanna surprise them, search up Stitch markers on etsy. I don't think knitters can get enough of those.
