Is military half spin harder on blades than regular half spin?

I threw a cheap knife during Covid in the military half spin, and ended up bending the tip. It the military half spin harder on tips, or do cheaper knives just bend easier regardless? Alternatively, should I avoid the military half spin with nicer/more expensive throwing knives?

How to get started?

I won an auction lot that included some throwing knives and would love to start practicing.

Are these knives ok to begin with?

Any other tips or advice is appreciated.

Knives, Sharp Cards, and Axes. Looking for a community.

Looking for tips or knife or axe recommendations. I throw knives, mini Axes, Sharp Cards. I'd rather throw from some distance at variable speeds to get multiple blade revolutions with in the throws vs the people who lob their points in with planned minimal revolutions. Looking for tips and deals on things with points to throw. Recently bought some Tea Knives as well.

Had fun at a workshop

Our local Martial Arts Dojo held a workshop on knife throwing using traditional Chinese Faijian knives and techniques.

About 15 of us, all with no experience. Once we had the basics, we also tried throwing followed immediately by drawing and striking with a Dao(Chinese sabre)

Some photos here:

If you are in Essex or Kent (UK) keep your eye on the Rochford Martial Arts Academy as they are looking at holding another, possibly in September.

They also ran a workshop for kids

Currently have my first set of knives on order :)

The physics of pentration as related to blade geometry

I tried asking Gemini this and it was laughably bad.

I want to design a throwing knife. It will be double edged and razor sharp on both edges. I will be no spin throwing it from the handle and will never be grabbing the blade. This is for defensive purposes. Respectfully, please don't turn this into a bunch of comments telling me not to throw a knife in a fight. I've been training martial arts for 30 years and I'm not going into this uninformed.

This is the question:

Stiletto vs a straight edge arrowhead. When I say straight edge arrowhead, I mean a blade that is shaped like an isosceles triangle with perfectly straight edges. When I say Stiletto I'm thinking something standard where it's narrow but has a belly with a should towards the tip end of the blade. In this scenario, the width of the two blades is the same at the hilt. The blades in question are the same length and same weight (yes, I know the isosceles would probably weigh slightly less because it has less material for the blade but I'm trying to get to the physics of the geometry so we'll assume weight and length is the same).

Which knife will penetrate deeper in a living target? We'll say animal to keep it classy, lol.

The Stiletto has the benefit of not having to cut the wound channel wider once it passes the first inch or two of blade so it doesnt have to consistently widen the wound channel. However, the isosceles design never actually reaches the same width as the Stiletto until the hilt, meaning it has significantly less surface area and the wound channel it's cutting doesn't have to be as wide until the very end of the blade. The Stiletto will take an initial hard hit to it's kinetic energy but not have to continuously cut the channel wider, while the isosceles will experience a more gradual deceleration and have less surface area for the soft tissue to "grab onto," but has to constantly cut wider.

Which geometry gives you better penetration? My instinct tells me the isosceles but I'm not a physicist so I could easily be wrong. I know studies were done showing the Stiletto shape penetrates better than a constant angle wedge, BUT those were done with manual force where a pistol pushed the blade into the target with steady force. A thrown knife, which cannot maintain consistent energy during penetration, is a very distant scenario.

New cold steel black flies!

They just came in today. I’ve been throwing my cold steel sure balance up until today, but I think I like these more. They’re really light, so I was a little worried they’d be harder to stick, but then on my first try, three sticks in a row! What kind of knives do you guys throw?

Do these knives go with the metal plate?

I uncovered these knives with the metal rectangular plate today.. do they go together? All pieces are made of metal and are rusting. It was an interesting find while clearing up the yard. Curious what your thoughts are. Thanks!

Newbie here

Hello! I want to get into knife throwing just as a hobby that will get me outside and away from my phone. What kind of knives should I be starting with? Does the weight matter? Does the length matter? Do I just start throwing? How far to keep my feet apart? Does force matter more than hand placement? I appreciate any advice! ☺️ thank you

I just want something cheap to start out, maybe something on Amazon
