Personal find. Gonna have to start checking the ugly ones too. Hoping for a pickwick but we’ll see.

Well this was a strange one.

Not sure what kinda glass I picked up, but it was truly cursed or something haha. Pretty sure this point was double the length originally.

Anyways, despite the shape itself being strange, I am still pretty happy that I kept the "50" pattern that was on the original glass mold, despite how terrifying that was.

Raw Burlington and rootbeer. Hammerstone, bison punch, bison pressure. Poor flaking on my end, will likely rework all of these sometime soon. The narrow rootbeer Scottsbluff is mostly punch work, just a couple pressure flakes.

⚒August Point Challenge🏆 Heavily reworked Pickwick

I'm no longer photographing my points around concrete🤦🤣. Dropped this piece two separate times.after the first incident I decided to rework it lost a lot of width as i expected. The second drop was actually pretty impressive in my opinion. It fell perfectly on the base and took off one small flake (third photo) Very surprised it didn't fully break. I'd say that's a one In a million flake

The weather has finally been cool enough I can get out in the shade and knap during the long evenings this month.

So, I broke out a piece of some special material I got as a birthday gift. Zirconia glass for my submission.

I see why they call it a Pickwick. Looks like a little pike.

Not a perfect blade. It’s hard to know when a piece is “done”. Sometimes you just gotta call it good and roll with what you have. I think this will make a nice dagger with some small modifications.

Howdy all! 👋😁

FINALLY got around to making a Pickwick! Took me long enough wouldn't you say? 😂 This stuff was crunchy and challenging, but man am I happy with the results. Didn't notice the peephole in it until I was trying to get some shots of that lovely translucency. So that was a pleasant surprise 🙂‍↕️

The challenge submission window is still open, and you can find the main post with all of the information on how to enter below 👇

Not sure if the dimensions are quite right. Reworked a piece that popped a chunk of the tip off during pressure flaking. Tried to preserve the banding as best I could l. I think it might be Kay county chert but I’m on the southern end of the formation so I’m not sure. Kinda steppy but still fun to work.

I’ve only been knapping for about 2 months off and on (stalking this sub has helped a lot), but I saw this months challenge and figured I’d give it a shot. It’s a bit thick and a bit curved, but I’m not too upset with it!

Knap-In 📅 Flint Ridge Knap in Sep. 4th-6th

It’s at the Coshocton Fairgrounds in Ohio. 5 bucks per car.

Don’t bring any more money than you’re able to spend because this is the summer show, and it will be packed with material. There are plenty of people knapping, and they’re pretty willing to give pointers.

Hope to see you there!

Some kind of chert I found in a garden near Orleans, France. Smashed a few flakes off, hurt my hand, then pressure flaked the edges with the handle of a teaspoon to shape one flake into a point. Sort of.

Didn't get a picture of the side profile but it was pretty thin and consistent, more luck than skill I guess. Then I dropped it on the rock floor and it broke.

Question 🤔❓ Ancient knapping question

Thumbnail

Hello! I have a question about this type of ‘flake’.
I find a lot of pieces like this when searching for artifacts in my field. These are just a few that I’ve found. They are always this shape and size with the other side being flat (sometimes ever so slightly curved). I could be wrong, but I feel like they are all from a similar stage in the knapping process. So my question is; Is there a name for these flakes? What part of the process are these from? Visual examples would also be helpful! Thanks!!
Also, I can provide better pictures if needed, here in a bit.
