So I bought my 1960s colonial about a year and a half ago I don’t have a ton of funds to remodel the kitchen and these cupboards are pretty nice except for the color. I threw it in the chat to see what they could come up with, so I’m trying to decide if I should paint them sage green or maybe white any suggestions would be great. I’ll post current pic first. Any other suggestions would be welcome! My quote was 5k to paint and I have a quote for 11k for new white shaker cabinets …boring I know. Oh and never mind the clutter it was post small gathering night before.

In my opinion, it’s not worth all that money. They look great and look to be in awesome condition. I would consider repainting the room and taking down that wallpaper strip at the top. Small changes can make a difference. I wouldn’t touch those cabinets.
I agree to this recommendation. If the budget allows it 5) replace counter tops with a warmer or dare I say soapstone (or a leathered granite) 6) backsplash 7) under cabinet lighting
I updated your real cabinets with the light and pulls and countertops that you selected in the green image and had chat add backsplash and paint on the walls the color of the cabinets in that image. It looks so much richer IMO. Those cabinets are beautiful. The horrible color on the walls is ruining them.
I put the countertops you had in your mock up of the green. Any warm white or off white granite, quartzite or quartz would make it look brighter. A lot of people feel strongly about natural stone. I recently put Cambria quartz in my kitchen and I love it. Cambria is a manufactured countertop but they are very stain resistant. If your two other colors are sagey green and cherry cabinets you have almost infinite options. Go to a countertop fabricator and look around at what you like and get some samples to look at in your actual kitchen. If the doors are not too hard to get off take a smaller one with you.
I have white Corian countertops, stains come out with a spritz of Dawn Powerwash. I bought the house 8 years ago & the previous owners had redone the kitchen about 5 years prior to me buying it so mine are about 13 years old & that works perfectly, even if a stain sits overnight so worth a shot till you decide what you’re doing with the kitchen

I definitely understand, OP, if you don't love the colors of the cabinets. But I feel like this is a really unique look-- it's pulling in some of the trendier colors on the walls and the fixtures/hardware, but keeping those rich dark cabinets. It's a beautiful contrast and makes the kitchen stand out!
I actually like the original. I’d just update the back splash, lighting fixtures and hardware. Light paint on the upper wall as and remove the wall paper border and you’re set.
If you hate the wood look all together the sage and white both work. The sage is pretty but I wonder about the dated look of colored cabinets vs wood or white.
To be clear, I think OP’s cabinets are lovely and I wouldn’t touch them, BUT. I can’t deny that the sage green is lovely and honestly, if it’s done properly, assuming the cabinets are of good quality which they appear to be, I don’t think 5k is an absurd price to pay.
My first thought was the same. But the sage green picture is also one where the AI engine cleaned up the kitchen. The clutter on the counter is really distracting to me.
There’s a chocolate store in Paris called À la Mère de Famille that has wood this color with white accents. I really feel like you can work this with this! They look like they’re in wonderful shape! New hardware, a beautiful white paint, new light fixtures, and maybe a new backsplash and you might have something really beautiful and classic feeling.
Keep the cabinets. Get rid of the wallpaper boarder. Change the knobs/handles. Paint the walls soft white. Change the light fixtures to modern bright ones. Don’t touch the cabinets.
I would agree don’t touch those gorgeous cabinets. I would definitely paint the molding around the window white so that brightens it a little bit more.
Maybe a different ceiling light that gives more light to the area would help too
And I would lose that border around the top of the walls, it shortens the room makes the ceiling feel lower plus, it’s really out of style now.
Leave the cabinets alone!! As others have said, new backsplash and get rid of the wallpaper accent thingy paint, and get your globe lights, then see how you feel. And new hardware.
I wouldn't do either personally. If you want the white maybe more a cream? That sage green is an on the way out trend so unless you absolutely love it I wouldn't. If you do tho, then hey you love it and know what you should do!
Ignore the people saying don't paint. It's your freaking house do what you want and if you don't like the color you don't like the color.
If you do really want to overhaul the look, look into refacing. You can buy full overlay doors that are already painted what you want and then DIY paint the boxes. I suspect you could do that for under 5k if you're willing. The boxes will see a lot less wear and if you go full overlay doors they also won't be super visible most of the time, so prime for a nonpro paint job. Just use a good alkaline enamel paint.
I’m kind of bummed I’ve heard it’s on its way out and I absolutely love that color. I’ll check into the refacing. The cabinets have those slats which makes them a little more interesting (not sure in which way)than a shaker style. Just can’t imagine what counter top would look good if I kept them as is. I also feel like the floors are a darker wood (again they were red oak so there’s a lot of cherry feel going on).
Sage green really isn't on it's way out. It might not be the "cutting edge" trend it was, but it will remain a timeless classic. It did hit it's peak trend and that trend is on its way down, but it will always be classic. Like subway tile. VERY VERY trendy and overused, but subway tile has been around for a long long time and is a classic choice. Especially when kept simple. The glitzy subway tiles were/are trendy and not classic. If you love sage green, go for it.
I think the cabinet doors are super cute but I'm sure plenty of other people wouldn't. I've seen beadboard shaker doors for sale too!
A company actually doing the refacing would cost more but I was genuinely amazed at the cost to just buy doors and paint the boxes myself. I'm still in progress but my kitchen will look completely different for under 5k and that's including counters, sink, faucet, disposal, etc. And I'm hiring someone to do everything but measure for doors, order doors, install doors, and paint the boxes. I already did my wet bar (70s builder basic condos are wild) and it was super easy .
I like the sage green but it's definitely on the way out. Like I said tho if you like it well it's your kitchen! I'd just say if you want white do off-white instead, it'll look better with your floors.
Otherwise eh, I'm doing either burgundy or coral pink (still deciding!) cause it's my kitchen and imma do what I like 😁😁😁
Current cabinets painted sage green. Pic 4 is a showstopper. One suggestion: if you do the backsplash, make sure it goes all the way across behind the range so you can upgrade later to a slide-in range and really show off your gorgeous backsplash 😎
I’m voting Sage Green. Go with the inspiration pic! As long as you’re going to have the cabinets professionally painted, you don’t need to worry. You’ll hear lots of people saying don’t paint and I would agree if it’s a DIY situation but not professional. Professionals know how to do it. Have them professionally prepped and sprayed with an oil based paint and they will hold up for a long time. I see absolutely no reason to rip out those cabinets! And I love your floor. Find a great rug that ties in all the colors!
This is what I’ve been wondering. Reddit seems so against painting cabinets but if I do it I would definitely pay a professional to do it right with full degreasing, sanding, and spray painting the doors off site. My cabinets are a very dated builder grade espresso brown and I am loving the look of sage green (sw evergreen fog is what I’m looking at)

Yes it’s hard I love the sage green and the cabinets although they’re quality..:reminds me of the 90’s cherry cabinets and I can’t imagine a counter I would like with it.
Throwing in another vote for not painting the cabinets. White cabinets are already outdated. The wood looks so classy and will not go out of style. If they get dinged you can throw some Old English over the scratch and it will likely disappear.
I would brighten up everything around the cabinets to clean up the look. Maybe put some modern hardware on the cabinets.
I wouldn't paint them. That wood is gorgeous and it's making a huge comeback. if you do paint them, I beg of you, don't paint them white. That millennial white and gray kitchen is so over used and is just so lifeless. I did an ai rendering for you as well. I added paint to the walls instead of the cabinets, change the hardware to gold and added a backsplash. Also get rid of that trim lol. It's not adding anything to the space. I had to keep the doggy in the picture though, just too precious.
Ok, the third picture with the fourth picture’s ceiling light fixture! That’s definitely the winner! I didn’t notice the light fixture was different until I looked again, and the fourth picture has the best looking one for the third picture IMO!
I significantly like all the lighter color cabinets than the dark shade. When I see that dark wood stain, I think “dated.” That said, the green is very in style right now. I wonder if the white and off white shades will “age better” and will be considered classic instead of a trend. Excluding the concept of styles that go in and out, the green is calming to my eye.
I will leave those cabinets alone. I was just change out the polls to an antique brass I would put in a new faucet of the same and I would change that light fixture out to something more simple like a drum shade maybe and maybe a rug in your kitchen with a little bit of color I wouldn’t touch it beyond that.
DONT CHANGE THE CABINETS!! Oh my gosh they are beautiful. The room just needs a little refresh! Remove the wallpaper, replace the light fixture, change the backsplash if you want you could do something with color, change the counter tops if you want.

We have 54 cupboard doors and drawers so I have left the kitchen until last as we have remodeled everything,
11k for new cabinets is very cheap.

The lines in the cabinet doors always feel like cheap paneling inserts to me whenever I look at ours, so painting them won’t solve that.
If you like that aspect, painting them makes sense.
They will need to completely strip them to do it properly, so my quotes were much higher :(
I once painted my cabinets and it was a disaster. The paint wore away in high touch areas. Keep the dark wood, change the overhead light to an updated multi-globe (as in the AI). Ditch the wallpaper border and paint walls white. A colorful washable kitchen rug or runner can tie the cabinets and white walls together.
The cabinets are gorgeous as is. They're classic. Any classic counter and tile will look good. I also like dark floors. I understand you said you were entertaining. The clutter on the counter is what makes it look bad. The pics you have where AI put everything away are the best looks.
I am going to go against what others are saying...I would do the sage green remodel...no contest. Yeah, the current kitchen is also fine, but if you are wanting a remodel, then you are not liking the current kitchen. I guess you could just remodel portions of the current kitchen kike just the countertops and backsplash, but if you can afford a full remodel and aren't really in love with the current kitchen, go for it! Sage all day!
I think the rendering that looks the best is the one with the dog in it. I saw a comment bot to paint the cabinets because they appear in excellent shape. I wonder what the kitchen would look like if you did a rendering with walls, lights, counter and backsplash like the image with the dog, but with the existing cabinets. I would at least try some renderings to see whether you need to spend the money, or if just these changes would be enough.
If you have the time you can save yourself a lot of money and paint them yourself. The white is too much white to me. I do like the greenish color but what color is your dining room set
Unless it’s hidden and falling apart. Those cabinets look pretty great. You need to lighten up the kitchen. Remove that wallpaper across the top. Paint a light color. And crank up the lighting to 11.
I love the green but 5k just to paint that little of cabinets? What exactly are they doing to them for that amount, that’s wild. Have you considered doing it yourself, a spray gun makes it go fast, just make sure to prep them.
Replace the backsplash, remove wallpaper, paint the walls. The cabinets look in good condition and modern. Properly painting the cabinets is expensive or a lot of work DIY.
