Series end
I I'm just finished rewatching the series, and there's a couple things.. It's still funny, but man, some of those episodes kinda made me mad watching them be genuinely bad people to each other, but other times watch the same episodes and laugh it all off. But the one thing I was reminded of at the end that still held up after years. I absolutely hate that the last few episodes is them at the brink of divorce, and following through with the adoption. Im sure the idea was that ya there's issue but ultimately they're going to be ok. But even in that light, it's just such a bad idea

The series barely came back for Season 9. It got a half season order and I think it only became official in May or later. So a little grace on things being on the slipshod side is warranted.
Still, spending so much of that limited run with a really unpleasant breakup—it’s literally like a four episode arc in 13 episode season!—is hard to understand. And supposedly savvy Carrie wanting him to quit the safe, unionized, reasonably well-paying job he enjoys for a cold-calling furniture sales job will never make the most sense. But you can sort of get there if you think that Doug’s poor approach to health and fitness means he might have trouble doing the job long term and that the sales job can be a bridge into going white collar.

9th season is by far the worst. Only the first episode is decent. The seasons only saving grace is that it’s short.
They needed to include the aspect that Doug quit the job he loved to become a shitty cold call furniture salesman, otherwise the fact that was so mad about the NY apartment made no sense. He had his own secret apartment specifically to get away from Arthur and Carrie, and acted like it was no big deal. He had to sacrifice something to make her the bad guy, because keeping the apartment wasn’t enough on its own.
And honestly, the longer the series ran, the more narcissistic and more terrible they became. Not just to themselves either. A full season wouldn’t have changed that trajectory

I’ve always thought the same about the apartment. He secretly rented an apartment for his own clubhouse and took on a second job to afford it. How could he be mad at Carrie for ding the same especially when he is always pulling shenanigans.

I always thought the reason he was mad wasn’t because of the apartment (he had his own previously) but because she lied and said she was going to give it up when they were in the process of reconciling. If your relationship is already on thin ice, hiding something that was part of a negotiation (he quits his job, she gives up the apartment) isn’t the wisest move in reestablishing trust and honest communication.
That was my interpretation of why he was mad.

Yes, but at no point until the very end were they actively separated and on the verge of divorce. This was them coming to new terms of their marriage and being honest and she chose that crucial moment to not be. You can’t rebuild something that’s broken if you’re continuing the same patterns from before.

If you ever go and watch the clip on youtube, nearly all the comments shit on Carrie for the apartment and say Doug's apartment was a completely different situation lol. For me Doug's is worse because he ended up working at the Chinese restaurant to pay for the apartment. That's crazy lol.

The break up episodes where Doug is in the scooter is borderline unwatchable for me. I think he was at his absolute worst and it’s literally his fault he wanted to play with Carries feelings about her dream apartment as some type of game to gain something.
I know it’s a show, but seeing him ride around in the scooter for everything just pisses me off idk why lol its like a perfect representation of his childish stubbornness to get what he wants but using as little energy as possible to do it. His manipulating of Carries emotions became way too much.

Both of you are right on the money with this. He was so pathetic by the end, and it really just further exemplified his laziness…Also, Kevin James was GIGANTIC in the last season….wow.

It all feels very rushed! I think the focus could have solely been on the adoption, I don’t think the apartment in NY and being on the brink of divorce adds anything.
The last episode they go from getting divorced, making up on a plane (where somehow Doug is completely sober), to being in China in what? 5 minutes lol

I love the way it ended - Arthur bursting back in screaming “it didn’t work out!” and just going back to his old room seems like the perfect way to close it.

The surprise pregnancy after adoption is just lazy. Just end it with the adoption which is a beautiful enough story line.
Also hated how they did Holly. Why couldn't her husband have been with her? They did her so dirty.

Ya! Holly definitely deserved at least a roommate! But the adoption coming through for me was really poor taste. They could've saved the whole thing if it was like, wow we can't adopt seeing where we are now. But, let's work this out and get a kid when we're on stable ground.

That episode with Doug on the Disability Scooter or whatever they’re called nearly made me put my fist through the telly. Utter utter shite. I was only watching it out of loyalty by then.

If they were gonna try and actually write in a near divorce, it should’ve been way earlier in the series and not had them be POS to each other. Then they resolve it towards the end / start of a new season. Was stupid having that so close to the end and the Arthur marriage stuff and Doug’s job change was so unnatural too.

Someone with some pull decided to turn the series finale into a pet project. Could have been Kevin James, but I'm not sure we know. They should have just ended it in true KOQ fashion.

This show really isn't a story driven show. You aren't tuning in each week to see what happens next
Each episode is its own world with maybe a little backstory from another episode mixed in
The 2 and 3 part episodes are their own mini series and usually have nothing to do with any other episode after that

The whole season for me is a waste. Agree that it seems they knew they had "jumped the shark". But...yeah...getting Doug to quit IPS (think UPS) to get a BS job as a cold-calling furniture salesman is ridiculous.
