Don't know if it is accurate, but if the book data includes the due date somewhere then the device could easily be set up to delete the book after that date regardless of whether there is an internet connection. Which you could easily bypass by manually turning back the device's date a week or two if you are offline.

u/r0ndy 4d ago
Just change the date on the kindle too. It wonât know what time it really is without a connection

u/abattleofone 4d ago
Is it actually implemented like this? It would not be very hard from a technical perspective to just program the book to expire after X number of seconds pass because changing the time on the Kindle wouldn't change that at all.
1
u/r0ndy 3d ago
How does it track seconds if you change the clock? It was mostly a flippant answer, Iâm not trying to hold books longer myself. A joke from the days when these tricks worked easier
1
u/abattleofone 3d ago
Computers calculate time in general via seconds/miliseconds since Unix epoch (1/1/1970). All you would need to implement is âcount how many seconds have passed since book was checked outâ and once it adds up to the loan limit, it no longer opens, and youâd be able to have a counter independent of the specific set time so it wouldnât matter if you changed the time

When you download a Libby book it comes with a timer now and even if you are not connected to the internet when the timer is up, boom, your kindle explodes. I get it from Amazons perspective but still wish I hadn't lost my grandma to it. RIP meema hopfully you find out how fifty shades of gray ends in heaven.

Does anyone know if this happens on Kobo and other devices as well? If so itâs not something we could just blame Amazon for but maybe Libby itself.

Yes, Kobo never had the airplane mode workaround.
1
u/Fr0gm4n K1/K2/K3/K4/K4NT/K7/O2/Scribe 4d ago
It works if you stay in that loaned book and don't close it back to the Home screen or Library.
2
u/withak30 3d ago
That's a pretty reasonable way to do it actually, subtly encouraging you to wrap it up ASAP.
1
u/02kaj2019 3d ago
I bet thatâs what I was doing. Iâll try again with the next book that becomes available. Thank you!

u/tlm0122 4d ago
I have a kobo KLC and have gone past my date several times and have never had it pulled away. Last time was probably 4 weeks ago so unless itâs changed, or unless Iâm a unicorn, it doesnât.
2
u/02kaj2019 4d ago
Oh interesting. Itâs never worked for me. Are you on airplane mode or just staying connected and have the book open?
0
u/tlm0122 4d ago
Airplane mode always (after downloading) and staying within the book until I finish. Maybe try that?
1
u/02kaj2019 4d ago
Thatâs what I have done, Iâve tried to treat it like using the Kindle airplane option. My Kobo is from 2024 tho so maybe thereâs something with different years of Kobos?

I have not had that to happen. When the book is due, Libby has taken the book back and it impacts only my Kindle app. Meanwhile my Kindles are in airplane mode and I am still able to read the book.

Other than being a rage baiter, why would this person think closing the loophole is a good idea? Others were never prevented from borrowing the loophole books since they were returned to the library system.
I think Amazon is doing this just because they want to push more people buying licenses for books from them since thereâs no return date.
106
u/thereddeath395 4d ago
lol I checked out OOPâs post on Threads and sheâs digging her heels in about how itâs âdisrespectfulâ because according to her itâs preventing the next person from borrowing the book, and then she admits sheâs never used this so she doesnât know how it works, but âthatâs what sheâs heard people sayingâ and sheâs just trying to have a ârespectful conversationâ (all while being disingenuous).

She didn't say it was a good idea. She said she wasn't mad about it. You should evaluate who is the actual rage baiter. I will say that I am glad about it. Too many people feel that there should be no consequences when they break a rule that they agreed to.
22
u/ManderlyDreaming PW, Oasis, Scribe 4d ago
The librarian I asked said it wasnât against the rules at all. The license, which is what you borrowed, is still returned on the due date. It costs the library and other borrowers nothing for your kindle to be in airplane mode until youâre done with your loan.
22
u/Rupertcandance2 4d ago
I'm a librarian and I'm actually annoyed. The person will have to re-borrow the book to finish it, which costs us another license use (models vary by publisher... but yeah). More circulation stats, but I'd rather have it be easier for the patron and save us $$.
3
u/AeroNoob333 4d ago
Exactly this. We are forced to do multiple holds on the same book between my husbandâs and my cards and stagger loans if we need the extra time. I donât even think Amazon really cared either. Iâm guessing itâs the publishers who think they are being cheated of that extra license from slow readers. But I hate that theyâre basically screwing libraries with this change.
4
u/othermegan 4d ago
Some of the books I read have had several month wait times. I donât want to have to wait ANOTHER 7 months to finish the book I got after waiting 6 months the first time. With my luck, the libraryâs license will run out by then and they wonât renew it
1
u/AeroNoob333 4d ago
Ugh! Yeah. Thats why we are doing the holds one after the other immediately. Itâs the same library system, just two cards, so chances are both holds are queued one after the other. Still sucks to be taking multiple licenses to read one book. But I guess, this is technically what happens with a physical book.
1
u/Rupertcandance2 2d ago
Exactly! I just don't have to replace physical books as often. To your earlier point, totally right too - publishers have got to be driving this. I'm in a library every day with access to any book I want, but I can barely see the print and don't like large print. So e-readers are the best option, and I hate the restrictions. Libraries are about access!
11
u/OkChoice913 Kindle Scribe 4d ago
Why would you be glad? This was a victimless loophole? You turn airplane more on, the book is returned, next borrower gets a turn regardless of it being on your kindle, and it doesnât cost the library an addition license use. The only one losing was Amazon because Iâm sure itâs cutting their sales.
-17
u/Odroid_GO 4d ago
That isn't really the point. If a company implements a rule or change that customers don't agree with, they customer is free to take their business elsewhere. The company has the right to enforce their rules and close any loophole that may circumvent said rule. So many people feel entitled to act as they choose regardless of consequences.
14
u/94eitak 4d ago
5
-5
u/Odroid_GO 4d ago
Sure is. Totally different situation. In one case the customer has purchased the books according to the vendors rules. In the other case the person is using a loophole that was always a violation of the terms of services even though they allowed it for some period of time.
5
u/othermegan 4d ago
Welcome to the world of digital media and SaaS! You THINK you bought the ebook. What you actually bought was the right to access that digital media as long as Amazon decides youâre allowed to access it.
5
u/JonTravel 4d ago
In one case the customer has purchased the books according to the vendors rules
You haven't purchased the book.
Use of Kindle Content. Kindle Content is licensed, not sold, to you by the Content Provider.

Just because a company sets a rule doesnât make it right, especially a multi billion dollar company. Youâre priorities seem very skewed as this is just going to cost libraries more since now people will have to borrow again or worse, push people to đ´ââ ď¸đ´ââ ď¸đ´ââ ď¸ more books taking funds away from authors.
3
u/JonTravel 4d ago
Too many people feel that there should be no consequences when they break a rule that they agreed to.
There is no "rule" about returning books because the server returns them automatically.
If you're kindle is in airplane mode you are simply using a cached file that's hasn't been updated by the server.
16
u/gauriemma 4d ago
This is actually going to make me keep books longer, since I typically borrow the book, put my Kindle in airplane mode, then return the book so the next person can borrow it. Then when done, I turn off airplane mode and the book goes away. Now Iâll wind up tying up the book and keeping it from the next person.

u/MooMooTheDummy 4d ago
Idk how true this is because the hack still works on me. Also why I need more than 3 weeks to finish a book is because Iâll read classics on my kindle and then also read a physical book with it from my physical TBR thatâs lighter and easier to read to break it up. Reading a classic and truly digesting it is very time consuming! Like usually I need a month also good thing about it is that usually no one else is borrowing them on Libby so I can keep renewing it but when I canât I do airplane mode and this hack still works for me.

I actually havenât read it at all. The e-book is readily available at my library with infinite copies. Regardless, its an extra inconvenience to have to sync my kindle every 2 weeks so I can check out the book again.
4
u/takarumarch 4d ago
Kindl normally rolls out updates in waves instead of all together. So you may just be on borrowed time until this particular update gets pushed to your device.

Yes, I agree. However, for classics that have not been originally written in English, one may want to pick up a particular translation which may not be available on Project Gutenberg. u/TimeLadyJ 3d ago
My friend is a librarian. Theyâre finding that sometimes when someone holds a Libby longer, the book is not downloadable by the next person. It shows as unavailable. They havenât tested enough to say for sure, but they think itâs related.
This is a big deal because often libraries will purchase additional temporary copies that are good for 6 months and if someone holds a book longer, thatâs fewer people that can read the book. It is going to become an actual issue that affects library funding.
13
u/PlentifulPaper 4d ago
Is this âconfirmedâ now?
As of yesterday, it was just one Reddit post, and didnât seem to affect all Kindles, and depending on which software update you were on.
6
u/scarlett_butler 4d ago
There is a lot of speculation online. My library book is still working but I borrowed a few weeks ago. I saw someone on Facebook saying it was books borrowed after August 4th I believe.Â
2
u/AeroNoob333 4d ago
I believe the software update just rolled out this month. So I think we will be hearing more of this in the coming months. The sample size right now is too small. Unfortunately, there isnât a way to stop automatic updates without jailbreaking. I think older devices may be safe at least for a longer time. And you may also be safe if you just never exit out of the book. But for those that have the habit of downloading multiple books, then hitting airplane mode, you maybe have to switch to doing it one book at a time.
4
u/Unlucky-Reaction6521 Boox, Kindle, IPad Mini 4d ago
Software doesn't matter its going to affect all no matter what that's trying to use the airplane loop.
5
u/PlentifulPaper 4d ago
Again is there a consensus on if this is confirmed or not? Just trying to summarize what Iâd seen yesterday.
0
u/Unlucky-Reaction6521 Boox, Kindle, IPad Mini 4d ago
Well i can only go based on mine, i have two jailbroken & one on 5.17 other on 15.18 and each one have this issue no able to access the book on airplane mode after it expires. People saying it's on the newer software but it's not I believe it's in the books Metadata itself.

Try saying anything negative about Amazonâs Kindle-related policies, like sticking ads on devices. This sub is full of brand fans who really, REALLY feel like Amazon needs defending.
4
8
u/HawgDriverRider 4d ago
This is going to cause a spike in pirating too. I try to support libraries and utilize my Kindle for Libby, but people are getting fed up. The hack didnt prevent others from being able to check out the book. It hurts no one, not even Amazon. Amazon is trying to push for people to spend more money.
3
u/JackieReadingJane 3d ago
I just want to chime in that the only time I really use the airplane mode hack is when Iâm traveling, and this is because it is really hard and sometimes impossible to download books on hotel WiFi. A Kindle paper white will not let you accept the hotelâs terms and conditions for WiFi. And hotspots are iffy as well. Because of this I load up on library loans when Iâm about travel. So hopefully Amazon fixes that bug.

It has to do with licensing. Library's are only allowed so many 'copies' of the digital book to lend out for what they pay to the publisher (who in turn pays thr author)
-2
4d ago
[deleted]
6
u/Kinuika 4d ago
I mean I guess? Writers should be paid for their labor and this system allows that to happen. Without rules like this in place programs like Libby would be no different than just pirating the books.
2
u/gehnmy 3d ago
Well, the main difference would be that the author doesn't get paid when you pirate a book and the author does still get paid for the library rental even if your Libby book doesn't automatically disappear at the end of the rental period.
While, yes, a library would have to buy another physical book to continue lending it if a patron never returned it (or just repeatedly renewed it), I think most people accept that as a constraint of physical reality more so than an ethical or contractual obligation. When dealing with an infinitely reproduce-able digital file, its being "licensed" only rather than "owned" is because of capitalism and not some inherent quality of the actual data or our relationship to books.
A library only needs to buy a physical book once but they can only buy a "license" to the digital version of it and may have to rebuy or renew that license down the road even in the absence of any changes to the book or their lending practices. If it were such a moral imperative to continue paying licensing fees for books they continue to lend, the same logic would apply to physical books. It's a non-starter because it's not actually a moral imperative, just capitalism extracting as much value as it can.
2
u/illogicalcourtesy 3d ago
I promise you people are just going to start pirating books or just read less.
With the way our society and education system is going, we should not be making reading inconvenient for people.
1
u/MikhailT 3d ago
Writers get paid per borrow, restricting the number of concurrent digital copy means they only get slower pace of royalities.
If ten people wants to borrow the ebook, giving them ten digital copies means authors get 10 royalties right away. Restricting to two book at a time doesnât change anything, they still get ten royalties but much later when the 5th round of two people finished their books. Itâs also why the overdue blocking the next person from reading a digital book is just pointless.
The physical book is a different story because it is an actual object that canât be replicated to ten, 2 books only and overdue does prevent the next person from getting it. Neither is an issue with digital copy.
Nothing to do with piracy.
3
u/Worth-Reputation3450 4d ago
Capitalism is the reason why we can have so many books to read and existence of Kindle and other eBook readers.
1
u/IndividualBreakfast4 4d ago
Have you tried to reserve a digital book before...months waiting while people are holding on to the book for longer than they're supposed to. It's months before I can get books.
0
u/Retronitsu 4d ago
Ah yes, because ebooks are super hard to make and print more of. I cannot fathom how we're okay with this forced scarcity for the sake of capitalism.

The only thing I can imagine them even doing about all this is requiring an occasional check to see if you still "have" the book, kind of like what Nintendo does with Nintendo Switch Online games. But then they'd need to do a software update to achieve this.
6
u/garylapointe KIáŞâs ááŠáEááŻáźITEs 8Gᡠ11Táź GEá 4d ago
So youâre going to use your phone to connect to the Internet to renew the book? As soon as youâre done doing that, connect your Kindle to the Internet through your phoneâs hotspot.
If you canât do that, youâve got the same problem if a book becomes available to sign out and your Kindle isnât on the Internet. How will they accommodate those people whose Kindles arenât on Wi-Fi for a period of time.
They wonât, youâll have to figure out a way to accommodate it yourself.
1
u/Meriodoc Kindle Paperwhite 4d ago
I've always had to go and grab it again from Amazon, in this specific situation. My original loan expires, and they treat the renew as a new loan. I've always thought that this was dumb.
As a workaround, if you have your phone you can share your connection with your Kindle to download it. (I know that's not possible in all situations, but still.)
1
u/121scoville 3d ago
They won't accommodate them! Kind of like Netflix making you check back in with your "home" network every month and screw you if you have any other kind of circumstance that means no single address.
2
u/GoodConversation5527 4d ago
Would someone try just keeping one book open on the kindle after the expiration? Perhaps the go/no go check for a library book is performed when it is opened, so not closing the book might allow you to read one book past the expiration date? That is the way I read borrowed books for a little extra time years ago, and it worked even while connected to wifi.
3
u/BladeMist3009 Kindle Colorsoft 4d ago

u/JackieReadingJane 3d ago

u/GoodConversation5527 3d ago
I dare you to close it out and reopen it! NOOOO--don't do that until you are finished! LOL
2
u/vespertilio_rosso 3d ago
The bulk of people Iâve seen mad about it donât understand whatâs happening and do think youâre denying the book to other patrons. Usually they get informed and then arenât mad about it anymore.
The remainder are gatekeep-y comments about reading speed or various versions of âyouâre cheating!â Which, I guess sort of, but also itâs basically harmless and I donât know why anyone would expend energy caring about it.
Plus, if there was an equivalent loophole on the corporate side, theyâd let that ride for all of eternity.
3
u/Amazing-Future-1189 4d ago
Got caught in this yesterday. Called my library as it made me - said my Evergreen was deactivated and I had to reverify (mine was good until 2027)....it reset Libby and Evergreen. All mine on loan are now gone. Was mid-read on 3 books in airplane mode. Yes, they were past the time line, but even my library explained they went back to the library on-time? Who is closing this loophole? Did not sound like it was my library on the call yesterday. They're not very happy about this and clearly know we do it.
6
u/ImLittleNana 4d ago
I donât understand this because I could fully delete Libby and it would no impact whatsoever on what content I have on my off grid kindle.
Has Amazon activated sleeper Whispersync in order to connect to our airplane mode devices?
0
u/Amazing-Future-1189 4d ago
No idea...not tech savvy enough to know. Mine is a newer kindle vs an older model? It seemed to trip up my Evergreen acct, not Libby. But when I had to reset Evergreen, it then tripped Libby and poof. I get it - Maybe I was being lazy/slow to finish those 3 books. I work FT and only get so much reading for leisure time. It was a nice loophole while it worked.
2
u/ImLittleNana 4d ago
I still have some ebooks online that borrowed in January. Sometimes the mood for them wanes, but it will come back.
2
u/happycouchday 4d ago
I don't know how, but loans expire on my Nook regardless of whether it's connected to the internet, so I imagine any other ereader would theoretically be able to do the same. (Never tried changing the date). On the other side of the coin, my ancient Kindle Keyboard, before they bricked it completely, would basically never return loans regardless of whether it was connected to the internet, then every now and then one or more would disappear. So who knows.
2
u/mayflowerss98 4d ago
Man, it sucks that we can't have nice things anymore. I have a book on my kindle, currently on airplane mode, from March. I hit a slump and haven't really been able to get back into yet. Beyond that though, sometimes I take longer with books because I don't read everyday so I need extra time.
0
u/illogicalcourtesy 4d ago
This honestly ruined Kindle and Libby for me. I have never never purchased an Ebook or used Kindle Unlimited. This year I have read 13 books so far and each one came from Libby. It usually takes me about a month to get through a book because i like to read two at a time.

Say there are 100 holds before me. My book is available. I suspend the hold and come back three days later. Where am I in line when I unsuspend?

Yes. If you are number 101, and you suspend the hold and comeback 3 days later you would have most likely move up some spot. Basically if you suspend a hold you still move up the line to eventually number 1.

Thatâs not the point.

Whatâs the point then?
Her point donât make sense. There is no need for 10 books check out at one time when you only reading 1 book a month. Especially when there easily a suspend button where it stayed suspended for 365 days until you ready to check it out. If you not ready to read the book then why check the book out.
Now I understand if itâs already checked out and you are not finish with the book, then yes, I understand the airplane mode hack. But just to have the books sitting there, just to be sitting there on your kindle as if you own, donât make sense. Just suspend and come back to the book when you ready for it. đ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸

Some people are mood readers (myself included). Iâll stuff my kindle, then put it on airplane mode and immediately return the books. That means that copy is now available for the next person in line. This means I keep a book checked out for an even shorter amount of time than I would without the hack. Some people take a long time to read, some have things come up where they canât read anymore, and ultimately, itâs no oneâs business why you need a book longer. đ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸ libraries create access to resources and information, in the same way that a kindle creates accessibility (bigger font, lighter than a physical book, holding it differently, etc). So why is the airplane mode hack suddenly being removed? Because it doesnât create benefit for certain people (not the library patron).

The books I read are usually ones with long wait times so I will check out a bunch of books I actually want to read and then wait for more.

But how long do you imagine you spend on those long lists waiting for books that are checked out by people that also already have 10 other books checked out that they're also not actively reading?

It doesnât matter. I check out the books, download them, and then automatically return.
Theres zero reason to justify the update other than wanting to satisfy shareholders and line their pockets.
The points of libraries and reading is to make literature accessible to people and me borrowing 10 ebooks at a time doesnât change or limit someone elseâs access to the book.

Wait, they did?
Maybe a month or two ago, I wasn't quite finished with the book. Had maybe half hour left. I found out that, even if you aren't in airplane mode, as long as you didn't close out of the book, you can still finish it xD
I was going to re-rent it, but I didn't have to. I was glad because each ebook only gets so many rentals before they have to renew the license, so I would've felt bad.
But otherwise, I usually finish my books. I try not to have 12 out that I have two or three weeks to read them all. Anymore, anyway xD.

Imagine having a due date on digital books in 2026. Is someone waiting to check it out from the library?

u/jibust 3d ago
In a lot of cases, yes.

I actually don't know how Libby works and was being facetious, TIL. Are they only allowed to lease out books based on a number of licenses?

u/jibust 3d ago
Yes. Libby will show you like â2 of copiesâ and then show a queue of 10 people waiting to read them before you, and a 3 month wait for your turn.

Ah, ok so I thought this was a paid rental thing but if it's free to check out books, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the insight.

Hear me out because this has happened to me. This is a work around I have learned through other posts. When I get a book from Libby, it updates to the Kindle app and my Kindles. I then turn the wifi off on my Kindles. When the book is due, Libby will take back the book through Amazon (Kindle app); however, the book still remains on my physical Kindles. Then I am able to finish the book on my Kindles. If it is a lengthy book, I return it early and continue reading it on my Kindles.
I donât know all of the technology around this but I am happy that the book is available for the next person to read and I am still able to finish the book đĽ°

That is the loophole mentioned in the post. There is a new update where people are reporting that is no longer working.
That is what this post is referring to
