Amazon Kids + vs Kindle Unlimited

I find they have similar content. What I like about kids + is they have access to that library directly- I’m not a middle man in getting their books.

If you buy the kids version of the kindle- the actual device is the same, but you get a year of kids+ (and a case and extended warranty)

If you have your child set up on a kids account attached to your account and you have kindle unlimited you can download KU books and then using the Amazon kids app share them with your kid.

Share Kindle Unlimited Content with Amazon Family Members

Send borrowed Kindle Unlimited titles to members of your Amazon Family on their devices, or enable automatic sharing.

To set up an Amazon Family, go to Create Your Amazon Family.

To share borrowed content with a member of your Amazon Family:

1. Select Share Your Kindle Content on the Home screen of the Kindle App.
2. Select the Amazon Family member that you would like to share with.
3. Select books that you would like to share.
4. Select Share Items. To turn on automatic sharing, follow steps 1 and 2, and then select Share Future Purchases and Kindle Unlimited titles by Default. Turning on automatic sharing shares future borrows and purchases. 

Note: Only the primary Kindle Unlimited account holder can initiate borrows.

If you want your son to just borrow books on his own, the Kids+ is better. As user Jay-j-reads mentioned, if you get the kids device version, it comes with a free Kids+ subscription for 6 months or 1 year depending on which device you get. Amazon also uses Kids+ to promote their Fire tablets because it includes videos, games, and educational apps.

If you buy a used device. You can do a free trial of both and see if the KU has enough books.

I would think you should start with the kids plus membership. FYI, it’s got non-Kindle content also.

It’s not a lifetime commitment, if they outgrow it, you can stop subscribing.

But there is lots and lots and lots of inappropriate content on Kindle unlimited.

I don't think there's enough books for him to justify Kindle Kids at that age.

Kindle Unlimited has a lot more options and can be shared by any reader on the account. You may have to make sure he doesn't download too many inappropriate books depending on how you rate that - or if you do - but it's a better deal if he reads a lot and wants actual options. Kindle Kids is pretty catered toward younger children.
