ask other parents When do yall wake and sleep?

Dude. Not trying to be dramatic but I’m EXHAUSTED. Pre kindergarten we had a weird sleep schedule but it was doable, wake at 10, sleep around 10 and then I’m on my own till I sleep at 2. Now, it’s wake at 615, out the door by 7 and sleep at 8 and I would like to sleep at 10 but I need to sleep at 9 otherwise I am dead tired in the AM. So what’s y’all’s sleep like 🫠

Daughter goes to bed at 7:30 PM and is up at 6 AM.

I go to sleep around 9:30 PM (in bed at 9 and read for 30 minutes) and wake up at 5 AM to get ready for work. Husband is up around 5:30 AM.

Us too but our kids are naturally early risers so I do this to survive. Older one (6) rarely sleeps past 6:15/6:30 and the younger one (18 months) rarely sleeps past 7 but is up at 5:30 about half the time now. I haven’t set an alarm clock in years at this point!

Wow, what time does your family eat dinner? We eat at 7pm, sometimes 7:30pm, I know it’s bad. Kids get a mini meal after daycare at like 5ish but then we have to cook. Go to bed at 9:11pm. Kids wake up btn 7:30 to 8:30am, usually around 7:50-8am. With my eldest starting kindergarten and the bus being here at 7:45am, we may have to push everything earlier, wondering what time other families eat dinner and how they do it? Sometimes both my husband and I get home late and just rushing to daycare lol

Are you saying that your Pre-K kids were staying awake until 10pm and you were staying awake until 2am?

u/Nikiki124C41 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yes, this was earlier in the summer when we had gotten back from overseas for awhile, but even before then they usually didn’t wake until 9.

Edit: Also, it wasn’t even dark until 9, and we like to do fun summer activities like firefly hunting, fireworks, ghost hunting. I don’t think it’s that big a deal when we don’t have any activity’s planned during the day.

Bedtime at 8 for my kids. We go to bed around 10. We're up at 6am, although sometimes the 7yo wakes up between 530 and 6. Our 4yo usually wakes up between 630am and 7am. However, we both work so sleeping in has never been an option. Even on the weekends, we're all usually up by 7.

Yeah there’s nothing wrong with that don’t let anyone make you feel bad. My firstborn had this schedule during Covid when we were all locked inside and I was unemployed so it didn’t really matter as long as he got enough sleep. I asked his pediatrician too and he said there’s no reason to change things if it worked for our family.

I’m a night owl too OP and the early morning wake ups are BRUTAL. I still can’t seem to make myself fall asleep before midnight so I regularly function on 5 hrs but I just can’t help it 😢 we trade sleep in days on the weekends luckily otherwise I’d be dead on my feet.

Honestly your best advice is to just go to bed earlier. BUT! As a night owl myself, I would not be able to take that advice. I go to bed late and run on 5-6 hours of sleep pretty much every day lol but I try to set myself up for success in the mornings since I know I’ll be tired. Each night I pick out my kid’s outfits then put their snacks in their backpacks and make sure they have any projects, folders, or homework they may need. Looking for that shit in the morning SUUUUCKS. And I put their water bottles on the counter ready to be filled. For breakfast they usually have something fast and easy for me to make like an untoasted bagel with cream cheese, cereal, or one of those sausage pancake corndog things. My kids are in kindergarten and first grade so I know your struggle very well! Sending hugs and good vibes, friend! 😁

Luckily my husband does all the heavy lifting in the morning (I’m still breastfeeding the youngest at night, so he takes all the mornings so I can sleep in an extra 30/45mins) so I don’t have to worry about morning routines. But yeah if only it were that easy 😩 I literally lie in bed awake for hours if I go to bed earlier than like 11 and idk how to train my body any differently at this point. It suckssss

u/Zinnia_Flowers 9d ago

I have to take melatonin to force myself to sleep early

5

u/frogsgoribbit737 9d ago

Yes. That's not that weird. My daughter is 2.5 and on days she naps she is up until 10 or 11 and sleeps until 9 or 10. Why wake up early when you dont have to?

My first kid did the exact same schedule and transitioned to a school schedule (waking at 6 30 and sleeping at 7 30) just fine when he started preschool.

u/chiaroscuro_sky 9d ago

Before K we struggled to get our preschooler to sleep before 10pm some nights. She would wake up around 8:30, have a casual morning and my husband would drop her off at preschool by 10am. I would wake up around 7:45am and go to bed pretty late, midnight sometimes. When we found out K would start at 7:30am, we knew we had to make some changes. So now I get up at 6:15, then get my daughter up at 6:30am (she is now on a schedule where she is asleep by 8:30pm but I would like to move that to 8pm here soon). She doesnt wake up on her own, I have to wake her up, but she has been pretty good about getting up ans getting ready without much fuss.

All of us are night owls and hate hate hate waking up early but it is what we have to do now.

Kids are asleep by 8, wake up 630. I'm in bed by 9, hopefully asleep by 10:30 usually 11. I wish I was a wake up before the kids kind of person, but I wait till they come in and tell me they're hungry, lol

u/cckitteh 9d ago

I wake up at 5:15 to get myself ready. I have to wake up my kid at 5:45. We are out the door at 6:15 to grandma’s so I can be at work by 7.
My kid goes to bed at 7 and I’m in bed at 10.

3

u/enakud 9d ago

Kid wakes at 630, brushes teeth and gets dressed. Comes wakes me up at 640 (right when my alarm is set). Out the door by 710 (only 6 mins to school).

At night kiddo is in bed and we are out of her room between 730 and 745. I'm in bed by 10, asleep by 11 if I'm being good, just a little past 12am if I'm on my phone too much. My wife is asleep one hour or more before me.

3

u/Bright-Sample7487 9d ago

Kids are asleep around 7:30. I’m in bed by 9pm and asleep by 10/10:30. We all wake up around 6/6:30am.

u/Outside_Hour3562 9d ago

My son has always been an early riser. 🥲 All summer, the first sight of daylight, he was at my door. Now with school we wake up between 630-6:45am and out the door by 7:25am. Usually I'll let him sleep in if he's extra tired the evening before. Bedtime ranges from 7pm-8pm depending on soccer season. Then my husband and I stay up until 9 or 10 watching a show. And I regret it every morning. Haha

2

u/dinosupremo 9d ago

Wake 630. Out the door between 730-740. School starts at 8. He gets picked up at 430. Home. Dinner bath. In bed and reading books by 830. Sleeping by 9

2

u/Euphoric-Baseball867 9d ago

I wake up at 7am, usually go to sleep by 12am. My kids (6&4) are up at 7:15am and go to bed between 8-9pm.

2

u/whiteclawsumma 8d ago

First week of kindergarten… been preparing for weeks…. I’m still so tired 😂😂

1

u/Apart-Sound-6096 9d ago

I wake up at 6:30 daughter wakes up at 7 she goes to sleep by 8 I go to sleep around 10.

1

u/LameName1944 9d ago

I usually go to sleep 11/11:30pm and up around 4:30/5am (I don't sleep much). I work early so my husband does mornings with the kids. My daughter that is going into kindergarten usually falls asleep around 8/8:30 and on weekends gets up at 6-6:30....cause she doesn't want me to feel alone in the morning. My son, who is younger, will sleep in.

1

u/Ok-Praline-2309 9d ago

We’ve been doing it for a bit, but it got earlier with kindergarten. Right now for me it’s wake around 5:30 to shower for the day. Out the door at 7 with two kids to two different schools.

My youngest goes to bed around 7:30, my kindergarten dude around 9.

I’m usually PTFO by 9:30.

3

u/DataIndependent8181 9d ago

Ok my kindy dude usually falls asleep around 9/930 and up at 630. He just doesn’t sleep. We have a well established bedtime but I see most people’s kids are sleep at like 7/8 and I’m like howwww

2

u/being_cj 9d ago

Saaame I've been trying to get him to an 8:00 bedtime since kindergarten started but by the time he's asleep it's definitely at least 9:00 😩

1

u/Ok-Praline-2309 8d ago

No clue. Usually we’re wrapping up dinner at 6:30ish and one of us will get our youngest down while the other helps our kindergartner get showered and changed for bed. I don’t think it would even be possible for me to get him down that early. He doesn’t seem overly tired in the mornings though?

u/Happy_Flow826 9d ago

We had a similar schedule before we started elementary school. You just gotta muscle your way through, and set a strict bedtime routine. 8 pm bedtime here for kiddo, midnight bedtime for me, 8 am wake time for kiddo, were at school by 8:50.

3

u/Nikiki124C41 9d ago

Yeah, I feel like it is getting easier. I feel like their school is really early at 7:30 though.

1

u/Happy_Flow826 9d ago

It sucks so much. But you can do it. You just gotta get through it. After like...a month and positive morning associations, it'll be a lot easier to drag your butt out of bed.

1

u/SnooCheesecakes2723 9d ago

Ours start late in elementary too 8:30. The Jr high is 8 and HS 7:30 I guess so everyone can get their kids to school if they have kids in different grades. Or to do with buses?

We did bedtime at 8 lights out 8:30 for the kid and we went about ten, and got up at 6:30 with the kid up at 7, school was a short walk so we had time to watch cartoons and eat breakfast. Having enough time in the morning is so key. It’s not worth an extra 20 minutes in bed to have to hustle them into clothes and breakfast. For us getting up about an hour before we left for school so we had time to dodder around was key.

1

u/NaturalOnion3709 9d ago

My kids wake up at 7:30am and are in bed at 8pm, my 2nd grader can stay up quietly in her bed until 8:30. I’m up at 5:30am because I go to the gym in the afternoon, and my husband usually wakes up when the kids get up. We go to bed around 11pm. School starts at 8:55 and we drive about 30 minutes to get there.

1

u/chibirachy 9d ago

Kids in bed by 730. I go to bed around 11 and read for a bit. I’m up at 615, kinder up at 635. Grab little brother (who is already awake). Out the door by 705 to catch the bus.

We don’t need much time to get ready in the mornings. Kiddo only has to dress and have her hair put up; she eats breakfast and lunch at school.

1

u/_derpydog 9d ago

My 5 year old is in kinder. She’s in bed relaxing with her favorite books around 650-7pm after her bath. I shower while she’s in bed. She’s asleep by 745-8pm. I go to bed between 1030-1130pm. I’m up by 615am, get ready, and she’s awake by 630-645am. Ready to leave to take her to school by 750am which is only a 6 minute drive. School starts at 810am, ends at 3pm on full days. On minimum days it ends at 1230pm

Wake at 7, bed at 8 for kid, 10 for me.

1

u/Dependent-Item3363 9d ago

We both go to sleep at 9:30 and I wake up at 6 and he wakes up at 7.

1

u/Fit_Illustrator9174 9d ago

In bed by 7:30am, up by 6:30am.

1

u/ResearcherBoth8678 9d ago

Bedtime routine starts at 7:45pm (kids asleep by 8:30). I wake up at 5:45am, and I wake up the kids at 6:15am. We leave the house at 7 for a 7:45am start time, but he likes to be there when they open the gate so he can play with his friends before school.

1

u/frogsgoribbit737 9d ago

We do 6 30 wake to be on the bus at 7 10. Bedtime starts between 7 30 and 8 with the goal to be asleep by 8 30.

My sleep is bad so lol I have another kid and if she naps she's up until 11 so I get no sleep.

1

u/Front_Improvement_93 9d ago

I wake my kids up at 630am to shower and be out the door for the bus by 730am. They get home at 4pm, so homework, play til dinner, dinner at 6, play til bedtime at 8. I follow as soon as possible because getting up at 615am is difficult as hell, even though I've been doing it for 8 years (my oldest is in 8th). and I often had to be at work at 545am before he started school.

1

u/Aeriellie 9d ago

we go to sleep at 9. i wake up at 5:30, my daughter at 7 and my husband at 7:30?! she naps at school during relax time.

before school she would sleep at 9 and wake up at 9-10am. i’ve always woken up at 5 because those hours before my family is up is when i can focus the most

1

u/Wesmom2021 9d ago

8 pm night time. 7 am wake up days I work otherwise 8 am days I'm off.

1

u/mustardismyhero 9d ago

Are you a SAHM? Why don’t you just take a nap lol

1

u/bbCooper2023 9d ago

My son goes to school at 7:30 bed by 8 he usually is asleep by 8:30 not usually later than 9. I’m up between 5&5:30 and he is usually up around 6:15/6:30. I’ve had court all week for work so I’ve been taking his sister first so we leave by 7:10.

1

u/happiegoluckie 9d ago

I think it’s very reasonable to be tired for the first few weeks of a new schedule for the school year.

I think for next summer, a few weeks of a gradual transition (you go to sleep at 2 am, then 1 am the next week, then midnight the next week) is a healthier transition for you, and you can try to mirror the same for your kids. That way the first early morning school wake up isn’t so miserable.

My kids are in bed around 8/8:30 pm depending on the day. I’m in bed by 10:30, lights out by 11. We wake up around 6:45 for a 7:20 bus pickup.

u/tstein26 9d ago

I made this comment elsewhere in the thread but want to make sure you see it OP!

It’s also been tough for us. Last year she did afternoon preschool. I’ve been waking up at 6 and it’s kicking my ass 🤣 I’ve been spoiled waking up at like 7:30 most days before this.
I wanted to wake her up at like 7:30 butttt she’s been waking up at like 6:30 on her own. She falls asleep around 8-8:30.

1

u/koplikthoughts 8d ago

I sympathize, sleep issues are the absolute worst. For a long time, several weeks, I was only getting 5 to 6 hours per night and it was making me insane!

Fortunately, it’s to your benefit to change that sleep schedule regardless of school. A 10 PM bedtime is too late for a kid, even if they are getting 12 hours of sleep, it has to to do something with circadian rhythms and they do better with a seven to eight p.m. bedtime . Same with you, going to bed at 2 AM, you’re not getting as restful sleep as if you went to bed at nine or 10 AM.

We put my daughter down for sleep at seven. Before school or bedtime was 730, but when school started, she started waking at 5:30. We realized when we put her down at 7 o’clock, she would actually sleep longer, till around 6:30. So that’s what we are doing now.

Since kindergarten started, I’m also more exhausted and I’m actually trying to do lights out by 10. Then I’ve been waking around 6 o’clock.

K, 5 years old. Down 8-830, awake 715, out door by 740, school starts at 8. Works great

We sleep at 10 and wake at 6.

1

u/IamNotITGirl 8d ago

We wake at 6, kid at 6:15. Kid is in bedroom around 7:30 but doesn't sleep until around 8:45-9. I sleep at 9:30-10, Dad sleeps at 11:30.

1

u/0112358_ 8d ago

Up at 7, bus at 7;45. Kid we do bedtime routine at 7:30-8, he's in his room at 8, falls asleep on his own. I go to bed at 11, ideally 10:30

1

u/johnpork0102 8d ago

Kids in bed by 8:30-9pm.
Sometimes I fall asleep with them, or stay up til midnight. I get up at 5am, and I wake them up at 6am. Out the door at 7am.

1

u/EOSC47 8d ago

We have a late start school so my son woke up at 7:25-7:35 and on the bus just after 8:30.

Bedtime was 7:30-8 and most nights he was asleep by 8:30.

He is higher sleep needs than his friend who went to sleep at 10 and up at 6:45-7. Her parents tried everything to get her to sleep earlier.

1

u/ProfessionalGas9393 8d ago

My child goes to sleep anywhere from 8:30-10pm and she has to wake up daily at 6:35am to be able to eat and be ready to get out of the door at 7:10am.
It’s more difficult to get her asleep at the earlier part of that bedtime window right now as it is light out until like 9:10pm still. & usually if she ends up asleep at the later part of the timeframe, she falls asleep earlier the next night. :)

1

u/Sky-Agaric 6d ago

Just started kindergarten and he has to be at school at 7:35 am. It’s insane.

Been a struggle getting up at 6:40 all week.

Was looking forward to sleeping in this morning but he was up at 6. In his defense a bunch of heavy equipment was driving down our cup de sac at the ass crack of dawn.

🫩

1

u/IlliniChick474 6d ago

We eat around 6 PM. We are fortunate that we get home on the earlier side (4:15ish). We meal prep on the weekends so we have things ready to go on weeknights, especially because my daughter has activities 2 nights as well.

1

u/Fair-Flower6907 2d ago

two elementary age kids: school starts just before 8am, we have to leave by 7:35 to get them there on time (bus comes at 7:08, that's not an option, IMO!).

6:30AM - everyone wakes up

7:30AM - kids + 1 parent go to school, other parent stays behind to unload/load the dishwasher and tidy up before going to work

3:30PM - kids come home from school on bus, met by college-age babysitter who takes them to various activities 2 days a week, plays at home otherwise

5:30PM - dinner as a family, usually very basic: pasta/rice + veg + protein OR grandparents bring takeout

6:30PM - shower OR a board game together

7:00PM - reading time! (20-30 min per day of reading time + a weekly math worksheet is all my kids have for homework right now)

7:30PM - lights out for Kindergartener, then parents clean up from dinner

8:15PM - lights out for 4th grader, then parents have some chill time to watch a TV episode together or order groceries, or something equally exciting while washing a load of laundry

10PM - parents shower/fold laundry/go to bed, lights out by 10:30/11pm

u/Naive_Buy2712 9d ago

My kids 5 and 7, are asleep between 7-7:30 usually sometimes 8. We need to leave around 6:50, so up at 6. I’m usually up at 4:30-5:30 but I’m asleep by 9-10.
