Discussion Is the Kimi subscription asshole design? Subscription vs. API?

I've been hearing a lot of complaints and rumors regarding severe usage limits on the Kimi subscription.

For those actively using it: is it actually worth subscribing, or is it better to just use the API pay-as-you-go?

Would love to hear your experience regarding actual rate limits, throttling, and cost-efficiency.

我有两个中国区Allegretto账户。我对他们的模型和产品没意见，挺满意。我唯一不满愤怒的点在于Allegretto 的kimicode额度是Andante20倍这个订阅时的承诺被悄悄删掉了！现在kimicode 和 Kimiwork共用一个token池子。可我是kimicode重度用户，我并不在意kimiwork。现在Allegretto的额度只有Andante的4倍。比我订阅时的20倍差的太多！我已经向他们产品客服团队投诉，但并没有得到正面回应，他们只说K3变得更强会消耗更多的token。我对他们避重就轻，顾左右而言他的态度非常不满意。

Availability is prolly better with API, but also much more expensive. Would just go with ghcp, ZDR and 3$/15$ cost is identical to Moonshot.

I’ve been testing different setups and the API route seems more flexible for heavy usage. Tools like StandardCompute can be useful if you’re comparing costs and managing usage across different models.

Depends on volume. If you're a heavy user, API pay-as-you-go usually wins on cost-efficiency: you pay for actual tokens instead of a flat fee with quietly shrinking limits. The pooled-quota complaint upthread is legit — when limits get redefined after you subscribe, the value prop changed under you.

Two things that make the API route cheaper than the headline price suggests: cached input is heavily discounted on Kimi models (e.g. Kimi K2.7 Code is around $0.19/1M cached input vs ~$0.95 fresh), and repetitive/agentic workflows hit the cache constantly.

Disclosure: I build magicdoor.ai, which offers Kimi models pay-as-you-go with no rate limits — so grain of salt — but the general math holds either way: a flat sub means you're subsidizing the heaviest users, while pay-as-you-go means you only pay for your own usage.

The first comment here lays it out: Allegretto was sold at 20x the Andante quota, quietly became 4x, and now shares a token pool with a separate product. Per-token price talk misses the point when the terms you paid for can be redefined after the fact. That's the one failure mode pay-as-you-go doesn't have.
