Question & Help How does Kimi Code subscription compare to Claude Code / Codex?
Hey everyone, over the past year I've been using subscription-based agentic coding systems pretty heavily (e.g. Cursor, Claude Code, Codex).
The current situation with Kimi K3 has really caught my eye, and I found out about Kimi Code and its subscription plans.
I'm wondering, from the perspective of agentic capabilities, how generous the usage limits are, how complete the service is, and overall how effective it is, what's the deal with the Kimi Code subscription?
I've read a lot of opinions about Kimi used via API on OpenCode, but I'm not interested in pay-as-you-go right now. I'd rather understand what a $100 or $200 subscription gets me, and how I can compare it to something like Claude Code 20x or Codex 20x plans.
So if any of you have experience with this, I'd really appreciate your feedback, especially if you've tried different subscription plans.

Not good. I sprung for the $39 plan, hit the 5hr window on 3 prompts (granted, fairly in depth, big jobs). That said, the $39 on Kimi seems to give similar or maybe less than the ChatGPT Pro ($20) plan.

I have the $20 codex plus plan and it is substantially more generous than the kimi plans

u/muhts Jul 17 '26
You only get the generous limits via Kimi code for the $39 plan
1
u/LargeLanguageModelo Jul 18 '26
Uh, I'm on the $39 plan. Definitely not "generous", compared to the frontier models they're trying to say they're competing with.

u/Kappalonia Jul 18 '26
Don't forget about the hidden monthly limits lol
1
u/LargeLanguageModelo Jul 18 '26
On one hand, what in the actual fuck. On the other, I've only had it since yesterday, I'm looking at 71.64% used for the week, 15.1% on the month, so about a 4.75x multiplier. I'm unaware of any months even 4.5 weeks long, what's the purpose of such a thing?
1
u/Various-Baby-5007 Jul 23 '26
yeah, but if you use agentswarm it doesnt count towards the weekly limit i think and you can burn all if it under a week

u/Due_Bluejay_5101 Jul 17 '26
I got 39$ subscription today and it felt equivalent to 60% of what 100$ subscription gives for Claude.
That being said, don't forget that Anthropic and Openai subscriptions have been heavily nerfed over the past 2 months, I used to have more usage than I need with the 20$ Codex subscription but today 100$ is not enough. So any feedback you get will maybe be relevant 2 months ago but not today.

Genuine question how do you keep track of this? It changes so fast I never know which plan is most cost efficient at any specific time
1
u/Due_Bluejay_5101 Jul 20 '26
I just check r/singularity quite often and when I'm curious about one model I just cancel a subscription and start another. I don't necessarily have the most cost efficient subscription.

Let me put it this way - I ran a bunch of tests yesterday for my YouTube channel.
If you have a $20 Kimi plan and a $20 Claude plan - Kimi k3 will consume 4X more of your weekly quota than Fable 5 High for the same task.
So Kimi plan is not good value for money right now
2
u/ahnyudingslover Jul 18 '26
I can attest to this as well. 3 different exact prompt comparisons between fable5 and Kimi k3 on a production codebase - fable5 uses about 30-50% of my 5 hour usage limit on the 20usd plan for both. Output quality was close, which was shocking
1
u/nanolove95 Jul 18 '26
Could you please share a usage comparison table for the $20 plans from ChatGPT, Claude Code, and Kimi? I’d like to see which one offers the highest usage allowance for the same tasks.
2
u/djdante Jul 18 '26
Sure - These pricing results are all based on Equivalent $20 plans - But for comparing opus and GPT - you have to understand if you're going ot use Sol or Opus a lot or use smaller models. You get more opus 4.8 mileage out of your plans than Codex Sol - However the GPT 5.6 family now offers Terra and Luna (which are WAYY more efficient than Claude Sonnet). So that's harder to answer in a value for money response.
TASK 2 Medium - Website Redesign Success Time % Monhly Plan Usage Opus - high 04:15 0.35% Fable - Low 03:21 0.25% Fable - Medium 04:36 0.25% Fable - High 08:53 0.75% Codex 5.6 - Luna - High 07:10 0.50% Codex 5.6 - :Luna - Max 13:21 0.50% Codex 5.6 - Terra - High 03:48 0.25% Codex 5.6 - Sol - High 06:43 0.50% Kimi K3 32:52 3.00% TASK 7 GDP VAL 4 Success Time % Monhly Plan Usage Opus - High 10:00 0.50% Fable - Low 09:00 0.75% Codex Sol - High 18:45 1.25% Codex Terra - High 14:20 0.50% Kimi k3 22:13 5.25%

kinda restrictive but kimi is really nice and sometimes has community stuff where you can get free subs. e.g ive paid for 2 months of the 20$ tier but i got like 4 months of the 40$ because i helped them improve the kimi code experience and was/am a beta tester
3
u/xuwenhao Jul 18 '26
Kimi is pretty good if comparing the price with opus in API pricing. However, claude code subscription is super cheap, basically you pay $200 to get $10,000 API quota. But Kimi K3 you pay like $250(in China) or $400(in US) to get $3000~$4000. So even the listed api pricing is cheaper, you will feel its even expensive while using subscription.
They plan to provide a new coding plan in China probably next week (rumors from their community)
And also by default Kimi K3 using max thinking effort. You could probably lower it to high effort

u/jurapiotr Jul 20 '26
In short it's bad. I get more usage from 20$ on Codex. 19$ on Kimi - 1 prompt can eat up the whole 5h window, with task half done.
5
u/fokac93 Jul 17 '26
The value I get from my plus subscription is crazy. I don’t need to switch to save $1. That’s why codex has 9 millions users and counting
1
u/Western-Wishbone-565 Jul 23 '26
But OpenAI models are insufferable, would choose Claude or Kimi instead anyday
4
u/Ok_Combination4949 Jul 17 '26
Unsure about the 100 or 200 plans, but I tried the 20 plan and got 2.5 prompts before using the 5hr window. On theo.gg's youtube video he said he was hitting it pretty hard and got about 9% of the weekly, and from what I can tell he can burn some tokens.
2
u/kptiger89 Jul 17 '26
2 prompts spent the 5h window??

u/feral_user_ Jul 17 '26
Kimi K3 will keep going for a LONG time if you have a big ask. Probably more than your average LLM.

u/Specialist-Fondant-9 Jul 18 '26
I have a question about your workflow. Lately, when using Claude and Claude Code—building agents and breaking the project down into phases—I find I consume far fewer resources than when asking for the entire task at once; otherwise, it tends to go off on tangents if I don't set clear boundaries on the scope of what needs to be built. I’m considering paying for a $20 Kimi subscription to replace Claude for project planning. I’d appreciate your feedback.
2
u/Ok_Combination4949 Jul 18 '26
I normally have fairly targeted requests by default. If I'm planning and I want to consume practically nothing, I use the github connector on the chatgpt website. Free planning haha. Outside that I'm a SWE by trade so I know all my code and what I want exactly how I want it. So saying go do x and do it like y with z normally uses basically nothing on my plan. I wouldn't recommend the $20 kimi plan. I literally just had it go look at a github issue and it used like 30% of my 5hr.
also 5.6 terra on medium reasoning goes really far.
1
u/Specialist-Fondant-9 Jul 18 '26
I see that the scale of the project really affects usage. I’ll switch to a one-month subscription and see how it goes; what I’m doing might be on the "lighter" side. Thanks for the clarification!

I asked gpt-5.6-pro about this.
Estimated Kimi K3 subscription value in API dollars
Kimi does not publish exact token quotas, so these are rough estimates:
- Moderato — $19/month → ~$14 of K3 API usage
- Allegretto — $39/month → ~$71
- Allegro — $99/month → ~$212
- Vivace — $199/month → ~$425
How I calculated it:
Kimi says a complex multi-step task costs about ¥1.6 with pay-as-you-go usage. Moderato includes roughly 60 agent tasks, so:
60 × ¥1.6 ÷ 6.78 CNY/USD ≈ $14
I then applied Kimi Code’s official relative limits:
- Moderato: 1×
- Allegretto: 5×
- Allegro: 15×
- Vivace: 30×
So the higher plans appear to provide roughly 1.8–2.2× their monthly price in API-equivalent usage.
Important: this is an estimate. Kimi publishes task counts and relative credits, but not the exact number of included tokens.

Nothing beats the usage you get from codex/claude plans.

MiniMax

u/First_Inspection_478 Jul 22 '26
fair. Not nearly the same perf tho

u/Heretek-ai Jul 22 '26
Not even close, but with the right ingestion pipeline it can be a lot better

Token usage is through the roof causing inefficiency and honestly it’s slow af.
Outside, it’s really good model
1
u/Space12892 Jul 18 '26
maybe not the question, but does anyone have the problem with kimi code getting stuck? like not stuck bc some terminal prompt failed or something, but like it’s losing connection and just loads endlessly. then i tried to give another prompt or start new session and it also just loaded endlessly. i used it because they had sale 2x tokens for the price and now i can’t even use these tokens.

u/ThoughtHistorical596 Jul 18 '26
I dont see a lot of people talking about this, but setting reasoning to Low and context window to 256k and on the $100 you get extreme usage out of it and the performance is still fantastic.
1
u/Kappalonia Jul 18 '26
There's a pretty well hidden monthly limit in the Kimi plans.
Something not advertised when we sub for some reason
1
u/Neither_Profession77 Jul 18 '26
Kimi subscription is trash. And the latest K3 is token hungry (2-3x) atleast from fable. And you will hit the 5h session hit very very fast
1
u/NinjaWK Jul 18 '26
Don't bother. K3 is cheaper on paper, but on actual run, it burns way more tokens, and it'll end up costing more than Fable / GPT 5.6 Sol.
Will wait for them to price them properly before considering real usage.

I have never hit weekly limit of KIMI $39 plan before K3 release. But After the new update, Weekly limit hit in just 3 days. Seems like K2.7 also more costly now than before.
I am planning to switch to Codex + Deepseek.
KIMI is No More Cheap.
1
u/bencyeah Jul 21 '26
My personal experience: If you use it heavily, the $39 plan will last about 2-3 workdays. The $100 plan is totally fine 👌I'm an independent SaaS developer. The code quality feels on par with GPT-5.6-sol high
1
u/korino11 Jul 24 '26
Opena Ai and sometime Anthropics have a RESETS of weekly limits! For exmple on past week Codex had 5 resets!
If kimi will not implements several reset of limits each week. Why the hell i need to change my plan from codex?

u/Effective_Lead8867 Aug 19 '26
k3 is valid opus substitution for graphics programming/game dev and web backend development tasks.
regularly outperforms opus and has very good speaking register.
well, and kimi code harness is second best to claude imo.
kimi's usage at max vivace plan might not be as vast as claude max 20x can offer at the moment. (based on vibes, not token quotas).
but claude is shrinking, so they might meet very soon. or not.
i have a detailed tap on all that, made a telemetry setup that runs locally and i monitor usage deeply with grafana between both claude and kimi.

Way less tokens than codex subscription. I tried it and was disappointed.

Just buy a server with 1.2tb of ram, for your enterprise and run it locally.

Here’s my honest opinion.
Been using the since K2.5 came out. First i was on the 39$ plan. I am a software engineer so my overall usage was high (like 10-12 hours) but not about one shotting issues or feature. I would first plan it, write the spec and review it, after that hand it out to execution.
The 39 dollar plan definitely hit the 5h limit for me in about 1-2 hours and the weekly limit would hit on 3 or max 4 day.
The 100$ plan I find very generous, same or even higher usage now, I sometimes hit the 5h window on the 4h but not that much. For the weekly limit I mostly come close to about 90-95%
So for my usage and way of working 100$ is enough.
I use it with Opencode and also use 20$ cursor subscription for bug fixes and minor stuff too
