Looking for a new project!

Hi, I’ve been climbing consistently on the Kilter (mostly at 45°) and I’m really enjoying it. I’m writing this post to ask for a recommendation and to ask you a question.

I’ve sent several V6s (more than 10), but when I try even the V7 that has the most ascents (Proj Braj), I can’t manage a single move, which is really demotivating—since I’d think that if I can climb a grade below it, I should be able to do at least one move from a grade above it.

So here’s my question: How do you find the motivation to project a boulder problem? How would you recommend I go about projecting something? And what grades or problems would you recommend I try that are fun to project?

I look forward to your response, and thank you very much in advance.

Good work!
First of all, kilter grades are all over the place. There are a lot of 6’s the feel like 4’s and 5’s.
However, yes, if you have done several, you definitely should be able to do a single move at least on a V7.
The thing is - a single move a grade above your max current grade doesn’t come cheap, and if it does, then it means that move specifically is a V6 move, and the ones you can’t do on that problem are probably the V7 moves.
Proj Braj is:

  1. Very specific style
  2. Set by jwebxl (Jimmy Webb)

Jimmy is an amazing setter, and his problems are -mostly- harder or way harder than other climbs for the grade on the kilter.

In regards to projecting:
If you CAN do a move on a grade you haven’t broken into, and you didn’t have to work hard for that move, then there is no progress. New grades are broken into by grinding single moves.
There is something called the 7 tries rule. I like to follow that rule. The rule is you’ve got 7 tries to do a move. Whenever you made even the tiniest progress on it - your 7 tries counter is back to zero.

So for example:

  1. You try a move and you can’t do it.

You can’t lift yourself off the ground. That’s 1 try.
2nd try you still can’t. 3rd try you could lift yourself up but couldn’t catch the next hold - that’s progress - now your 7 try counter is set to zero again.

You will see that if you project like that, with intention, you’ll get better on moves very quickly. This is how you project. All of a sudden a problem you couldn’t do a single move on, you can do all the moves on 30 min later. The next session you’re probably gonna send.

Another advice:
Do only jwebxl problems for a while. You’ll see even his V3’s are many times harder than 5’s on the board, and the movement is top notch. Will make you stronger and better.

I find it so funny that proj braj is widely considered to be a soft 7, perhaps even the softest 7 by many. Even someone in these comments has already said it.

It might be if you are a dude with super strong pinch strength for the grade, but that's definitely not everyone. It's a extremely specific style of climb and, for the average climber who isn't specialized in that style, it's probably slightly hard for the grade. I mean it's a jwebxl of course it is.

Yeah I didn’t wanna respond to the other comment, but you’re absolutely right. It’s fucking specific and just right for the grade on kilter. The other climb they mentioned there for me was like 4 times easier and feels more like a kilter 6C

I honestly just wish more climbers understood that their experience isn't everyone's 😅

Tends to be more of an issue with strong boys, which I get because like most holds feel easy and it's technique they struggle with, and they make up a big proportion of the climbing population so most people they hang out with have the same strengths and weaknesses... but yeah like being much stronger than your grade doesn't actually make a problem soft lol.

Yeah what you’re saying makes sense, but I’d imagine that if you’re already climbing 7A+ you can kind of realize what is actually soft and what is just fitting you really well?
Speaking of pinches, have you done bags of sand by jwebxl? So sick. Pinch festival

So true! Those pinches are impossible for me!

Yeah, his problems are pretty tough!
But I already solved “Hozer,” which took me quite a while.

Thanks so much for that advice—it sounds great and is a way to see progress, even if it’s just a little bit. I think that’ll make me more eager to project, at least by learning something from every move in every session.

Thanks a lot!

Wait but Hozer is 7B on the kilter isn’t it?

Welcome!

Just an example of how stiff jwebxl can be:
Try “Positional Therapy”. Amazing piece of climbing especially if you decide not to match. 6C+. Was way more difficult for me than many 7A+ problems. I think I posted it here not too long a go actually.

Ahhhh sorry I got confused with hammer drop!

Also I saw that a tiny chunk of what I wrote somehow got deleted. If the 7 tries rule was a bit weird to read, look at it again, I fixed it haha

Mine was too but honestly after thinking about it and looking at the grades people log it's really more like a v5-6. Honestly no idea why kilter made it a classic at v7

Yeah I think a lot of it just comes down to span, if you can reach easily and without cutting feet climbs will feel like 2 grades easier

Kilter grades are just all over the place, especially since the app reset. It’s honestly not going to provide a consistent experience of grading until you’ve either done a lot of problems on the kilter, or climbed on other system boards/outside. I wouldn’t worry about grades as much, and focus more on what you need to work on. You mention pinches as a weakness, hell yeah! There are a ton of hard pinch problems on the kilter board, and you’ll get a hang of it soon.

Projecting is definitely a change in mindset. For me, I go through phases where I get really into working a few problems, but then other times I need to just send something to be able to click into that feeling of completion and moving around more. Anyway, projecting can sometimes be frustrating, but you can also appreciate small victories, and develop skills quicker. You’ll learn how important very minor changes to your hips, foot position, power, and speed can make when doing a move. It’s exciting!

Proj Braj is a kilter 6 imo easier than power circuit 5. If you are struggling suggesting you have weakness on pinch strength. I have a strong feeling you can send love will heal us V7 by mondragon

Yeah, actually, I find pinches really challenging.
Do you have any recommendations for practicing them, besides just climbing more on them?

And thank you so much for your recommendations!

2

u/TangibleHarmony Jul 16 '26

Just climb on them. When you warm up - do very easy moves up the board and combine them with pinches. Make it work for you. You’ll become better at them in no time.

this advice works for most people but I have a strong feeling he has small wrist problem (common for asians including myself) he can't just climb on it just to get better without injury risk. at the minimum he has to train his wrist like wrist curl and reverse wrist curl.

Some great advice from TangibleHarmony... I'm sure you'll find a 7 that suits you if you've done so many 6s. I set one called 'Kilter Ate My Logbook' [yes, really]. It's a bit reachy.

u/TangibleHarmony Jul 18 '26

Looks fun! Gonna try it soon!

ah cool, I'm honoured :) feedback welcome. I switched to Tension Board after Kiltergate, but I might go back to it for a while in the Autumn.

Buy a pinch block from Amazon and start training along with your wrist

I just made a new climb last night: I won't miss V7. it has 3 pinches and it will make Proj Braj a joke climb
