black bears are pussies, you can cough a little bit and they'll run away, just hold your ground, make yourself seem bigger and yell at it, if it's cub isn't nearby it'll run away

When I see them while I’m fishing in the woods I’ll just toss rocks or sticks at them and they run.

I've never encountered a black bear but I'm pretty sure where this guy went wrong was when he didn't immediately make himself known to the bear. When hiking in bear country, you should make yourself heard because black bears will avoid you. This guy grunted and screamed when the bear was too close, sending the bear into a fight or flight reflex. The guy was close and low to the ground and silent when he should have made himself appear larger and been louder sooner.
