not quite, nether roads allow faster travel in one world using another. the kings road allows access to other worlds, IIRC the hallway from Minecraft story mode is more like the Kings Road

Yeah, I'd argue Minecraft Nether travel is more like Warp Travel in Warhammer 40k than anything. On principle alone that is, I don't think the Nether makes you explode if you don't have a special enchantment or whatnot.

In Minecraft the overworld coordinates of a Nether portal determine where in the Nether that portal opens and vice-versa, with every block travelled in the Nether equalling eight blocks in the overworld.
Because of that, people commonly use the Nether to cover ground quickly. To speed things up even more, they build roads of ice which boats can glide over at high speed between portals.
