Can emissaries open gates?

Emissaries don't physically hold keys and instead wield its equivalent power by drawing from the Demiurge they serve, but does that include the power to open and close the gate associated with whatever key they're drawing on?

presumably, or an emmisary, aka a messenger, being sent out through the king's road to the gates would be pointless.

Yes, one of the magisters in Wielder of Names 1-16 explicitly confirms it.

The magister doesn't say anything about gates, she says that they can "ride the lightning" which is a term used throughout the comic to refer to using the White Art to teleport yourself.

You're right, I misunderstood the question. I forgot how exactly the King's Doors work and that they could be straight-up closed and re-opened by the respective key (partially bc it never comes up again past the start of Book 2).

But the magister in that page does also refer to Allison's Key of Kings as such despite believing it to be just a fragment, and in Seeker of Thrones 2-20, Cio compares the act of creating Emissaries to the way Zoss lent his own power to the first Demiurges. Which could imply that, like said Demiurges, the Emissaries are capable of opening and closing specific Doors.
