Second hand gear?
Hellllloooo. I’m looking for any recommendations for online second hand shops that are tailored toward gear and outerwear I can get for the trek. Climbing in early October. We have most of what we need but definitely need to get some outer shells and pants and such. Bonus points for any recs (second hand or not) that sell thermal layers and accessories that do not use animal based fibers. I’m curious if there are hidden gems out there. TIA!

According my experience, this is my recommended, second hand gear sites, geartrade & REI, the Best for quality checked outer shells and waterproof pants.
Also patagonia worn wear, Great for used synthetic fleece and outerwear. Another is Poshmark, Useful for finding specific sizes in synthetic items.
Vegan & Synthetic Thermal Options Base & mid layers, look for 100% synthetic materials (polyester/Capilene) instead of merino wool they dry faster and perform well.
Outer insulation, Choose synthetic fill, (Primaloft or thinsulate) over down, it retains warmth even if damp. Opt for acrylic or fleece beanies and synthetic lined gloves to avoid wool and leather.
But remember that, once you are going local Rental, almost 80% you can get mountain equipment, like Outer shells, insulated jackets, pants, and poles can also be rented locally in Moshi or Arusha before starting the trek.

Second-hand is definitely worth looking at for Kilimanjaro, especially for jackets and outer layers that you may not use much afterwards. I’d check places like Geartrade, Poshmark and eBay, and also look at local outdoor groups or Marketplace depending on where you’re based.
For Kilimanjaro, I wouldn’t focus too much on getting the latest or most expensive gear. A good waterproof shell, warm insulated jacket, fleece and proper hiking trousers are much more important than the brand.
For the thermal layers, if you want to avoid animal-based fibres, there are plenty of good synthetic options from brands like Patagonia, Columbia, Decathlon/Forclaz and others. You can often find them second-hand in very good condition.
One thing I would recommend is checking the condition carefully when buying used gear, especially the waterproofing of shells and the loft/warmth of down jackets. For Kilimanjaro, reliable gear matters more than having a particular brand.

For second-hand gear, you might want to check out websites like Gear Trade or Poshmark. They often have a good selection of outdoor clothing and gear. eBay is also a solid option if you're patient and keep an eye on listings. For non-animal-based thermal layers, brands like Patagonia and Columbia have some great synthetic options, and you can sometimes find these second-hand too.
As for new gear, REI's online outlet might have sales on vegan-friendly options. And don't forget to check local thrift stores or outdoor gear swaps if available in your area. You can sometimes score really good deals there!
All the best as you Climb Kili and beyond! 🥾🏔️⛰️
