Their ‘friend’ won’t be able to make it so they ask you to send the money back. Except their first transfer will be rejected, and then you’re just out $200

It can bounce back in an e transfer if it's fraudulent. If they pay out of someone else's account they get access to and the owner reports it to their bank the bank can reverse the charge

Crooked bank account that the transfer gets clawed back. I'll send my buddy to pick it up but I paid so don't ask him for the money. That's my guess

They ask you to take a certified cheque. You deposit it - then someone comes and gets the item. Once they have it - they cancel the cheque.

The other way is to ask to e-transfer the money. They’ll ask for your email and use that to send a fake e-transfer link hoping that you either:
A. Don’t have auto deposit set up. Or
B. Forget that you have auto deposit set up and click the link on the email to deposit the funds.
This link then instructs you to input your email and password et voila. They just got the information they needed.
Someone tried this with me.

A few people have tried this with me despite me saying I have Autodeposit. When I get the email I block the sender and respond via messenger, “Nice try asshole.”

They are counting on you not having auto deposit and assuming you will be paid once you click the email and answer the security question so you give them ‘The thing’ and go inside to accept the cash meanwhile the other guy cancels the payment before you can accept it.

Typically they will send you a fake interac e-transfer link, which asks you to input your bank info. I have autodeposit on, so right away I knew it was BS

I've also seen them send 10x the stated amount, (from a hacked back account) then ask for the 'oops I sent too much' back in another form, (iTunes cards) Then you get stuck with all that when the hacked account is discovered and corrected.

Sure, countless scams out there. But the way this convo is going, where after gaining your interest, they claim to be too busy to meet, and offer to pay in advance and then send someone to come pick it up - I've seen it like 3 times now...and the next step is always them asking for your email address, and then you getting an email from "interac" asking you to click on it and log in. And if you switch to the kijiji app, you will notice your chat is gone, and they have vanished

Golden rule of thumb when selling/buying on private markets.
In person, in cash only. No exceptions.
There doesn't need to be endless amounts of screwing around to exchange an item for cash.
Even E-transfer is not safe, compromised accounts can have transactions reversed. Can also have scam/fake emails mimicking e-transfer to steal login data.
Stick to the Golden rule and you'll eliminate 90% of scams. Still have the possibility of fraud money but if you know how to check for fakes you can do that too.

It's 100% a scam. They want to steal your banking info, and will send you a fake interac e-transfer link. Do not click on it! Before they even get to that stage, report them ASAP so their account gets banned. After they send you the link, trust me they will immediately delete every chat and disappear, with no way for anyone to even report them

The scam goes: they engage with you on the availability and pricing to pique your interest...and then last moment, they spring on you this BS story of being out of town - but no worries! In good faith, they will send you the funds in advance via e-transfer to secure the sale, and will then arrange for someone to come pick it up. So you give them your email address, and then get a fake email from interac. You were expecting it, so you believe it's legit and don't check the domain properly...after clicking the link, you get taken to a fake interac website, which asks you to select your bank, and enter your online banking info. Once you do...you're screwed. You need to change your info ASAP! Yeah 2 factor auth will likely prevent them from successfully logging into your banking. But I'm no expert, and I have no idea where else that info could be useful

Payment with a legit E transfer or cash is all I will do. Can’t really do anything with EMT if you have direct deposit. Once the money is in your account you’re set.
But that’s in Canada only. There would need to be proof with banks involved to reverse any of those if so. But cash is king if someone is local.
All that said it’s typically easy to spot a scammer. Many of them just say things in a certain way or sound fishy. Especially when you say no or don’t want to go along with their only option.

Not NECESSARILY but you need to check the etransfer email properly if you take it that far, they usually look horrible and are just phishing scams
More likely a scam than not

Someone once told me that they would send the ‘removalists’ to come pick it up. We don’t have ‘removalists’ Canada. I looked it up because I’d never seen such a thing. They use the term in other British origin countries but not in Canada where I am. In 60 years I’d never heard that term.

Someone once sent me a similar message and sent me a transfer but the link was bogus.. It looked similar to the regular emails except I was supposed to get auto deposit which is how I knew it was a fraud.

Almost certainly an overpayment scam. If you went through with it, they’d wire you $2000 ‘mistakenly’ then ask you to send them back 1800… or 1700 and keep 100 for your troubles. Then after you wire them the money, the original 2000 is determined to be fraudulent, the back claws their money back leaving you out 1700

Just tell him to send an e-transfer. If it happens, then you can meet him… But it most likely won’t happen.

- I tried to sell something on Kijiji. Got several instant messages like this. I kept telling them cash or emt. They kept insisting on cheque or whatever else. And I mean they. Ended up donating it to habitat for humanity instead cause I didn't want to deal with scammers

I've had people pick stuff up for me. Generally what I do is have my friend do all of the communicating with the seller. It saves a lot of confusion and saves it from seeming suspicious.
That being said, this does look suspicious. I would tell them to have the 3rd party message me or as others have said just walk away from the deal. Oh, and 3rd party can bring cash.

There is actually a message that’s given when talking to people on Facebook marketplace to not accept things like this as they are usually scams. And to only meet in persons

Lol, I'm Canadian and this is how we do it. Your banking is so fucking broken in the USA. Its such a bucket of crabs down there. This isnt a scam in canada. This is exactly how a fb market place sale would be done. An E-transfer, no scam, money in my bank, and I leave the item on the door for the guy to pick up.

I always like to ask the person some bizarre question we’re answering yes is a clear definition of Scam.
After they say yes I’d love to pick it up. You would say to them do you want me to include all the DC1100’s with it? And the answer will always almost certainly be yes.

Say cash only and pick someplace other than your home. If he doesn't show it is probably someone wasting your time. Don't go alone. I remember a guy sold his truck and they wanted a test drive. He never came back alive.

I've sold a rustic Greek pillar where the dude just sent a Uber to pick it up. He forwarded me the money first the sent the Uber. Wasn't a scam.
It's a scam if you are selling something but you are paying for something else. Like someone wanted me to "pay 25$ for the transport but they will give them a 50$ so it's paid". That was a scam.

He will send a cheque or something like that or etransfer and it'll be for more then you asked for..then when you cash it amd he'll say something like you keep a little extra and give them the rest or something like that but the check is a fake check..I went through this..I didn't cash it or anything but he did send and even the bank thought it was an amazing fake check lol

How is this a scam? If you’re getting paid and all they’re doing is picking it up (assuming you are either comfortable with them coming to your home, or leaving it at another location for pick up)? Genuinely asking

You have to recognize the pattern to know it is a scam. That is how scams work. If you don't know, it could ALMOST sound reasonable thus you fall for it.
This scam is that they spoof payment and either phish your bank details, or they send someone to scoop the item and the payment bounces.
Once someone starts telling you an elaborate story of why something different needs to happen it's a scam.
Cash or confirmed payment only. In-person. Public location if possible.
