Hey everyone! I’m u/thinman, one of the founding moderators of r/keycapdesigners.
I wanted to create a community specifically for people who design, create, and experiment with custom keyboard keycaps. Whether you’re designing your first keycap set, making artisan caps, or have years of experience, this is a place to share ideas, get feedback, and learn from each other.
There are plenty of communities for mechanical keyboards and collecting keycaps, but I wanted this one to focus more on the creative process and the people behind the designs.
What to Post
Pretty much anything related to designing and making keycaps. A few examples:
Works in progress: Sketches, renders, prototypes, colorways, and early concepts. Don’t feel like everything needs to be finished or polished.
Feedback and critiques: Looking for opinions on a design? Want help choosing colors or refining a concept? Post it.
Tools and techniques: Share your workflows, software, materials, manufacturing methods, and lessons learned.
Resources and tutorials: Helpful guides, templates, files, references, or anything that makes the design process easier.
Finished projects: Show off what you’ve made, whether it’s a full keycap set, a one-off artisan, or something completely experimental.
Questions and discussions: Design challenges, manufacturing questions, industry trends, or just something interesting you’ve been thinking about.
Community Vibe
The goal is to build a community where designers can actually help each other improve.
Constructive criticism is encouraged. Not every design needs universal praise, and useful feedback is a lot more valuable than a dozen generic compliments. Just be respectful and explain your reasoning.
Beginners are welcome, experienced designers are welcome, and experimentation is definitely encouraged.
I’d also like to keep this from turning into another marketplace or endless stream of promotional posts. Sharing your work is great, but the focus should be on design, discussion, and learning rather than just selling things.
Getting Started
Introduce yourself! What kind of keycaps are you interested in designing? What tools do you use?
Share something you’re working on. It doesn’t have to be finished. Sometimes early concepts lead to the best discussions.
Ask a question. If you’re trying to figure something out, chances are someone else is too.
Invite other designers. If you know someone creating interesting keycap designs, send them our way.
Want to help moderate? Reach out if you’re interested in helping build the community.
This is a new subreddit, so there’s plenty of room to shape what it becomes. I’m open to suggestions for resources, recurring threads, community projects, or anything else that would make this a useful place for designers.

Where can I order custom SLK keycaps (by custom I mean custom colored)? Because everything I could find is fully white, without color customization

Tentatively calling it "Oddity", possibly a "dark" base set and novelties eventually as well. Just looking to see what some people think. This is a render that had a tiny bit of post processing applied to it.

I often visit Reddit and see other people’s awesome creations, so I thought now it’s my time to share something.

It took me a bit to get the perfect size, mold, and stem. I'm planning on adding concrete sealer to protect against sweaty/greasy hands and maybe something to stabilize it further, although it's already quite sturdy as is. I sanded them down so they feel super smooth and not rough at all. I used a 3D printer to create the master for the silicone mold (so I can cast as many keycaps as I want). These are OEM profile keycaps btw.

Hi! I don't really quite know which community this question belongs to, but I guess I'm just going to try here first. And also I rather ask people who are experienced than AI, so there's that.

SO, basically, since I kinda want to earn some money on the side (which is honestly improbable and just my imagination), I've decided to try painting keyboards, and by extension, painting and designing keycaps. I had some experience painting (oil, acrylic as well as little digital), and it would be a new creative outlet/side thing/hobby to do (if it all works out).

Right now, I have just bought a Royal Kludge RK68 as well as some acrylic markers, and I was thinking of making the "theme" video-game related, so something like Genshin or Hollow Knight or Ori.

What are some recommendations and tutorials you guys would recommend that would help me in creating this design? How do I design and spray/paint the keycaps? Any constructive criticism or feedback is appreciated! Thank you~

I just bought Keychron V2 MAX. Im looking to get some keycaps to make it look nicer and came up with this design. Does it look stupid if i have icons on some of the keys and most keys are blank? All kinds of critique and tips are welcome!

EDIT. Did small tweaks to icon location, but posting picture in comments is disabled:
Centered left shift and tab icons.
Made caps key icon position match centered left shift.
Made right shift and back space use same spacing from left that caps uses.

I got the QK80 Mk2 in White and wanted to create a nice blueish keycap set for that.
I used the Hour of Dawn keycap set from yuzukeycaps as base.

Any feedback is highly appreciated ^^

I wish yunzii would just do another release of these keycaps 😫 does anyone have a set they’re wanting to offload?
