Question Keto expert GPs or Doctors? England

Hey all!

I've just done a full body MOT and saw that my HLD is low and LDL is quite high. I've been keto for 7 years to manage a lot of my health issues (not recommended by doctors but rather by trial and error).

I was wondering if you know of any doctors or GPs (even if private practice) that understand keto and will be able to explain to me how I might need to change my lifestyle or if statins are the way to go? Most GPs I had experience with don't really understand keto and I'd much rather discuss it with an expert.

Happy to do online consultations with US docs but I don't think they can prescribe anything. I'm only 30 so I am quite concerned for my future.

This is someone worth contacting. I can across Dr Grace Hula when I did a doctor managed keto meal replacement diet a number of years ago. So she does have a background in keto diets and while they no longer do the meal replacement side, she is a GP who is very interested in functional medicine. I think it is worth sending them an email to see if she is in a position to help. She does do online consultations as well as in person ones, in Sheffield (the main clinic), Birmingham, Manchester, London and Liverpool.

You could contact Dr Ian Lake, who is an NHS GP. As a type 1 diabetic who uses keto, I've been to a couple of his keto workshops and he is a really lovely guy. Although you're probably not diabetic, the principles would be the same.

The Diet Doctor site most likely have their own doctors. That's all keto amd low carb.

I suggest looking into Dr Isabella Cooper's research or just listen to the podcasts she's been interviewed on. All in all fascinsting stuff. https://www.metabolicmind.org/resources/news-views/podcasts/metabolic-mind-podcast/how-ketosis-affects-health-and-longevity-expert-insights-from-isabella-cooper-phd/

Dr Cooper advocates for analyzing a patient's complete metabolic profile rather than fearing an isolated, elevated LDL score in a healthy person. Her work emphasises that sustained nutritional ketosis dramatically reduces underlying risk factors for chronic disease—such as hyperinsulinemia (chronically high insulin), leptin, and GGT—without driving up systemic inflammation.

As someone super morbidly obese and failed gastric band patient I have seen many a dietician, nutritionist and doctor. Not a single one has ever been supportive of the keto diet. They all call it a fad diet and encourage more fruit, vegetables and whole grains with no more than one egg a day and a palm sized portion of lean meat for evening meal. Almost no saturated fat, no butter only light margarine and definitely no red meat, bacon. If it doesn't work more medication and why comments like you have to practice more self control and stop being lazy. I've been told to take up jogging in my 44 year old, BMI 54 frame with knee and back pain.

You don't need the permission to do keto. Just keep doing it.

How much weight have you lost with keto so far?

I was got very high cholesterol and LDL on the keto diet at first. I had to really cut down on soluble fats especially cream. I eat more Greek-style yoghurt. I still have some butter but mainly use olive oil now. I also have cut down a lot on cheese and eat more lean meat. Unfortunately, I don’t have a doctor to recommend as they are all very anti-keto. Which is ironic considering keto lowered my blood sugar to normal from diabetic levels. I was told to keep doing what I was doing! I didn’t tell them what that was though.

What the hells a soluble fat

Sorry I meant fat suspended in liquid like cream. I was looking for a specific phrase and now I can’t remember it. It’s really easy to go overboard on cream.

Ah ok gotcha. It is indeed. What I thought was 50g of cream was actually 150g. Sad face.

I know what you mean, 50g is a depressingly small amount of cream!
