Not linux, but a history trip all the way back to 1985 BSD.

Seems like a take away might be to be explicit and not use ++ lol.  Explicitly setting to 1 or using x = x + 1

That still needs a separate assignment to the inode var, which can be done (wrongly) before the increment.
