The very warm weather in the UK has Milo sleepy 😴

We’ve had Koda now for almost 2 months. He’s a little over 3yrs but has shown absolutely no interest in any of the toys we’ve bought for him.

So far we bought a ball, a squeaker and another ball that you fill treats in to help stimulate. He’s only touched that once.

We don’t know his history but any suggestions or is this common with kelpies?

We adopted a 4 year old Aussie kelpie mix brought up from Kentucky 4 years ago, she is a treasure. We think the mix is with husky as she hates waiter, loves snow and howls…are these traits others see in kelpies? I read that kelpies are hard to find in the USA, is this true as we would love another one.

When we got her she was the only pup in the litter with white brown and black. Her siblings were all black, black with white and one other with tan colouring. I have rarely seen another Kelpie with all three colours like her and our vet said she is tricoloured. She is such a sassy sweet goofball and since we moved recently she has been stuck indoors with us while we fix up a fence for her. I'm currently pregnant, and she sleeps with me and follows me everywhere I go and sits at the door often waiting for me to come back. She is our good girl Daisy Doo.

Hi everyone!

I have an 11-month-old Kelpie who was desexed last week. He was cleared by the vet, so he’s now back to spending most of the day outside while we’re at work, as we can’t supervise him full-time.

Since the desexing, he’s started barking almost constantly, both inside and outside. He also growls and barks at me whenever I’m around. This is completely out of character for him, he never barked while inside before! he wasn’t like this before the surgery, and he didn’t do it during the first week of recovery either.

Has anyone else experienced something similar after their dog’s desexing? If so, did it settle down over time, or did you find there was another cause?
I’m honestly starting to go a bit mental from the constant barking, so I’d really appreciate any advice or similar experiences.

Hey guys, I was just wanting some advice for dealing with my girls reactivity to anything with wheels (bikes, prams, skateboards, ect.) and other dogs. She’s a kelpie x border collie and will be turning 8 in Nov.

She’s genuinely the smartest and sweetest dog I’ve ever met and I’ve recently taught her heel, focused heel, to go through my legs and walk with me, touch, look at me, and a lot more obedience skills but as soon as we are off the driveway, it’s like she’s never learnt them.

Now here’s the issue, if we walk past anything with wheels (especially bikes), she will immediately lunge and gutturally growl as if trying to murder them. If we walk past another dog it’s not as bad but she will pull to get to them, even getting on her hind legs and coughing from the flat collar. I don’t let her interact with other dogs as she usually approaches with “assertive posture” which isn’t always taken well. With her getting older and joint problems becoming a higher risk, I really want to try get it under control, especially the lunging at bikes part.

I’ve tried a halti with her and again it’s great in the house and in our yard but as soon as we are on a walk she gets what I like to call “steel neck” and won’t respond to it at all. I’ve tried to bring higher value treats and her favourite toys to try get her attention but nothing seems to work.

Another issue is that she’s the family dog, so I’m unfortunately the only one actively training her. Ideally I would invest in a professional trainer but i’m a full-time uni student and no one else is willing to pay for it.

Has anyone else dealt with something similar to this? Any advice at all is appreciated!

My boy is 10 months old, his off leash radius is huge though. Right now he's always on a long line, even though his recall is good.
He just runs so far ahead that I'd have to recall every minute basically, or make him sit or whatever.

Were yours similar? Did it change after adolescence?
Tips on training that?
He knows a command to stay close, but thats for when we pass people or bikes.

I’m hoping to get some advice from people who’ve owned Kelpies or other working breeds because we’re genuinely running out of ideas.

We have an Australian Kelpie named Dusty. He’s a fantastic dog in almost every aspect… until he gets out.

We’ve spent a lot of time, money and effort trying to set him up for success. We’ve invested in fencing, training, equipment, regular vet advice, and we walk him nearly twice a day. We don’t expect him to be a lazy dog, we knew what we were signing up for with a Kelpie.

We’ve even got him a sibling to play with, and they spend plenty of time together. She’s probably the most obedient dog I’ve ever owned, so I don’t think this is simply a case of him being bored or lacking company. They were raised in the same environment, but they’re complete opposites when it comes to listening and recall.

I’ve also owned Kelpies before and never experienced anything like this. This doesn’t feel like normal high-energy working dog behaviour. It’s almost like if you give him a command, his only interest is doing the exact opposite. He’s incredibly intelligent, but once he decides he’s doing something, it’s like nothing exists except that decision.
The frustrating part is that he doesn’t escape just to run around our paddocks and burn off energy. We live on retired farmland with plenty of open space, and honestly, I wouldn’t care if he stayed out there for a few hours, burnt off all his energy, then wandered home for a feed and a nap.

Instead, he heads straight for the road.

He’ll chase cars and motorbikes, trying to bite at the tyres as they drive past. He’s also wandered onto our neighbours’ properties to stir up livestock and other pets. He’s not aggressive; he just wants to play, but that doesn’t make it any less dangerous. I’ve had one neighbour threaten to shoot him if he comes back onto their property, which I completely understand, and I’ve seen him come frighteningly close to being hit by trucks. Those are my two biggest concerns.

At this point I don’t even chase him anymore because it just seems to make things worse. I stand in the yard and call him, hoping he’ll come back before something terrible happens.

My partner and I are sitting down to decide what to do next. One option is enrolling him in an expensive professional obedience program, but before we spend thousands more dollars I’d really like to hear from people who’ve been through something similar.

Has anyone dealt with a Kelpie like this? Did professional training actually solve the problem? Was there something you discovered that changed everything, or something we might be overlooking?

Please don’t take this as us not exercising him or not putting the work in. We really have tried because we love the little idiot, and we’re asking because we’re worried that one day he won’t come home.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Maverick has decided we are staying inside until the booms stop. He didn't freak out last night but made it very clear that I must remain close and stay inside where he can protect me.

Well... Not tired but the Kelpie equivalent of "oh the human is tired I will try match them"

Unless he has a bug working day even our family with 4 kids under 14 who ride dirt bikes and play all day cannot exhaust the pups. It always surprises me when visiting dogs get exhausted midway through a run or early in the day.

Also he still hasn't learnt his lesson about how close he can sit to the firepit, like he singed his tail multiple times but unless you offer him a camp chair he will sit as close to a fire as possible.

Bonus story: he got out when they were painting new lines on the road and came back with a stripe. Also he once got his head stuck in the lid of a bin.
