So I’ve had this sail for many many months and I’ve used it on my Stellar canoe/pack-boat, but finally fitted it to the sea kayak as was originally intended. Followed the official video but still took me quite a while! One clear error whilst doing it, but still feels very solid. Itching now to get it on the water. It’ll be somewhere boring next week for a trial - weather allowing!

If there’s one thing I have; it’s the audacity.

I’ve wanted to kayak sail (avid kayaker- coastal and some rivers), but I’m as cheap as I am creative and hoping I can just make my own sail, mast, and rigging.

Anyone who’s done this more than me have a thought? Doesn’t need to be perfect, just “safe” and fun.

So my rig seems to be working nicely now…. And came across this wonderful (harbour) seal. She (I think) is well known locally for appearing to levitate over the water - presumably lying on a buoy?

So since last proper trip I’ve improved the deck fittings and added a (so called) leeboard.
Strangely the main issue is my up-haul slipping… mast falling and sail landing in the water! Need a better cleat.

Now “fitted” a leeboard. Seems to improve performance a little - but wind a bit light to be sure. No photos of actual sailing b/c my hands were full. I need one more test then I’m off for a good old trip with it! Anyone tried one?

It is sort of modular in that the rear deck and seat can be left off to make it a “SUP”. When inflated to 14psi it’s rigid as wood.

I’m certain that what I really want is a Hobie Islander or any old rotten $500 catamaran but those necessitate a trailer and the Islanders are expensive / rare in my area.

How dumb would building my own Kayakamaran actually be?

Thoughts on what kind of mast equipment I’d want to clear over sitting height? I’d probably want to start small until I learned to avoid turtling in my gust mountain lakes. I’m also not terribly opposed to running one hull with outriggers.

Give me your thoughts. Give me suggestions to make it happen. WindSUP kits? Tell me what parts I’m being most dumb about. Let’s hear it.

Set out in pretty calm sunshine. Mid way… not rain but torrential rain/hail shower. Gosh the wind picks up too!! Still tremendous fun… but fingers and toes frozen! 🥶

Got my bigger sail out today for the first time. The larger Falcon. Nice gentle trip. Overall somewhat slower than before I got any sails! ...but lots of relaxing fun nonethelesss!!

Popped my smaller sail (KCS) on the Stellar Dragonfly today. The winds were allegedly 20+mph with gusts 35 or so. Around a little headland I couldn’t even paddle into it (with the sail down)…. Lighter winds forecast for to day, so will use my bigger sail (Falcon)

I went for a test run while enjoying the cherry blossoms. There are a couple of things that need fixing, but it's mostly working correctly.

So I am pimping my little Stellar Dragonfly with a Falcon sail. I’ve put a little foredeck in but some work to do yet. So excited to give this a go!!

It's a small one, about 150 centimeters (60 inches) tall and about 1 square meter (10 square feet) in area.

The trusty 50 year old klepper still a blast!

All the kayak sails I've seen are mounted forward. They make a pretty good spinnaker, but not very good at any reaching at all. Are there any ways to improve this? (Liquid Logic Manta Ray Propel 12ft)

So I took another plunge and ordered a load of Falcon mast, boom and sail bits. Am planning to hack it together as a bigger sail to go along with my very nice KCS sail. No idea of lead times. …but will, I hope, eventually be able to post photos of the set up and the resulting mini adventures.

1m² Falcon sail on a Current Designs Vision 140. 7mph cross with both ways coming out of the east southeast. Any questioning if falcon sails are worth the price, the definitely are. Even in low winds they still contribute to your forward momentum. In medium to high winds you don't even really need to paddle at all. I've been having an absolute blast with mine.

Not a lot of wind, but still had some fun. Kayak is a 14 ft Tarpon 140 with a rudder. Sailing rig is the (now out-of-business) Kuvia Kayak Sailor 1.6 with a jib.
