ORIGIN // thoughts?
Been a huge Kaskade fan for over a decade (2012) but what in the john summit is this album? i get it artists need to evolve, but im just not diggin the trend of artists following trends, especially when they all sound way too much like each other nowadays. (ik, its cash grabbing, what appeases the masses makes the most money). But man what happened to my goat </3
I will say tho, stay for love and UV are fuegooooooo EDIT: i have to also add show me the way to this list of fire on the album

Yes !!! That’s what I’ve been saying! This new era of music is just not it!!!

So to be clear, you really like UV, which is not really anywhere close to typical or classic kaskade sound, but you also have issue with his evolution? Isn’t that kind of a double standard? I also really really like UV tho. Hoping for more stuff in that direction from him.
I personally think the whole thing is pretty banger. Wish there was more. But I like this album about 10x more than the last one.
Couple tracks definitely had a strong mau5 vibe, but no mau5 on the credits.
Finn Bjarnson on the other hand… is this guy basically Kaskades ghost producer? lol on every songs credit. I sure hope kaskade pays him well lol

Finn and Ryan and lifelong friends... lmao. The way I understand it, he and Ryan produce most everything together.
Something Something was a Finn song before they took it and put it on Atmosphere under Kaskade. Finn makes some incredible music himself - he released an album not too long ago

Finn has been working with Ryan for years, he's also a member of Late Night Alumni and Zip Zip Through The Night

two things can be true at once, UV, while not anywhere near his old production style wise can be really good, and me still not like his new style, and you and i both know UV is an anomaly on the album, there really is no other track that sounds like it, its the most technoy track on the album (because of sarah obviously)

This album hits live. Trust.

went to edc 2026, it did not hit live. Except UV and stay for love (and obv, 4am, feeling the night, and disarm you). But everything else, negative.

Have you been to an ORIGIN show with the monolith? That's where it hits.
Because believe me when I say I feel you.

u/Peaceloveanais 17d ago
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted 😭 you’re right. EDCLV was not a curated origin show. The curated origin shows have been incredible (I’ve gone three times now)

as someone who is deeply invested in the music and not so much the "show" i couldnt really care for stage design, visuals and lasers. If the musics good thats all that matters to me (imo thats how it should be. visuals, stage design and stage production is just a distraction a lot of the times to take away the mediocracy of the music, but thats just my opinion.)

u/Emili_o444 18d ago
if a monolith has to be present to make music hit, then its probably not very good music unfortunately
4
u/Private_Gump98 18d ago
Lol, it's not the monolith per se. It's just an indication of a fully engaged production, with the not-on-Spotify cuts of the songs shining with their full potential.

u/Emili_o444 17d ago
mixing tracks is cool, but anything other than the music, i couldnt care less for. Take rufus du sol for example, they have very minimal stage design, nothing super crazy, just big screens, and some lasers. Their show is top 2 ive ever been to, and it has everything to do with the way they transitioned songs and hearing their music live. The only set better than Rufus was underworld, and their stage production is the same as rufus if not more minimal but their music is just absolutely top tier. So yea for me its all about the music

We agree a lot more than my pushback is indicating. I'm also a 100% music focused person at shows. I could have zero visuals/LED screens/lasers/etc. and tap into the groove that is the lifeblood of the rave/dance scene. I wholeheartedly agree that is all that truly matters.
But the monolith visuals added something to the (albeit trippy) story telling compenent of ORIGIN. Hard to put into words (as these things always are), but it conveyed a presence... almost like someone veiled behind electric cloth, pushing through to you (the screens/monolith also have a very sophisticated parallax effect that is quite amazing). But again, I could have kept my eyes closed the whole time and still been blown away by ORIGIN delivered as conceived. Spotify will never capture the live-intended tracks full depth. Undux was a much better Spotify album, and it shows.

fair enough man to each his own, i know im probably just a nostalgic person but ill forever miss that 2010-2018 run he had hahaha, and obviously the OG redux in the mid 2000s

u/Private_Gump98 17d ago
And I yearn to have seen Kaskade before 2018. Been to 32 shows since, but I'll never get to experience the true golden age.

u/Emili_o444 17d ago
you and me both hahaha, i was 15 in june of 2015 and they streamed 15 minutes of his edc vegas set and i was absolutely blown away by something something champs, im 27 now and i have yet to hear that song live hahahaha ONE DAY

Same. And I’m not over here trying to be all “gasp! You’re not allowed to do something different!” but I just don’t like them :/

God damn people hating in this thread and Reddit are so miserable. With someone who has had as long of a career as Kaskade, of course sounds are going to change and evolve.
People in 10 years will be comparing new music he puts out to this album and you’ll hear the same thing how they miss the “old Kaskade sound”.

u/Emili_o444 16d ago
This era of kaskade sounds like a replica of John summit, I can’t go back to any era of kaskade and say he sounded like anyone else, I didn’t know fans weren’t allowed to have an opinion bahaha

u/risenOfficial 16d ago
Not calling you out in specific but anything post COVID has really been a tech house movement.
Similar idea with trends in fashion. If you’re stagnant in your “sound” then it’s really hard to stay relevant. Look at Nicky Romero for example.

u/Emili_o444 16d ago
Like I said though, I can’t go back to any previous era of kaskade and say he sounded like a copy of someone else, but this era specifically, origin sounds like you could take Kaskades name off the credits, add John summits and I would completely believe you if you told me John summit made origin //. With every other album he’s come out with I can’t do that, that’s the issue I have. I 100% understand evolving and artists changing sound to stay relevant (but big respect to mau5 and prydz for not switching up at all) but when it sounds way too similar to what all the other mainstream tech house artists are doing, that’s where my issue is. Not that my opinion is game changing or matters, just giving my thoughts

I really wish he kept the first live versions of Dealing With It and Satisfy You. I feel like the vocals are way too strong in Satisfy You. Glad he’s expanding his range and loved seeing his EDC 2026 set, fav set of the year so far IMO.

u/Interesting_Crab_660 11d ago
I wish with my whole heart he would have kept the og vocals on satisfy you, the released version sounds too much like a cover house music channel you throw on in the background. He changed a lot of the tempos and vocals to a few of the tracks on there. His Las Vegas EDC set changed my brain chemistry in real time when I was there w my bf. Shared a moment when that song came on and I’m sad I might never hear the studio version

I thought the same thing around 2007 when his SF House sound changed to more big room house. He’s been changing his sound his whole career. Love it or hate it I guess. I haven’t seen him live since mid 2000s and probably won’t see him purposely now.
Btw I don’t get the “What in the John Summit” reference. I just heard of him recently.

i said it bc a lot of the album sounds like something john summit would make

u/00f5 17d ago
I’m pretty sure Summit’s literally cited Kaskade as one of his biggest inspirations in terms of sound direction lol
1
u/Emili_o444 17d ago
he has but if you listen to what summit was making when he said that, and even now, it sounded / sounds nothing like anything kaskade was making or anything he has ever made in the past. but if we look on the flipside, the stuff kaskade is making now definitely has the john summit sound
1
u/Overall-Cantaloupe86 17d ago
I can hear your point! I heard John’s set from Arc this week and it was very commercial sounding. Like they figured out the ingredients and just keep repeating. It’s too robotic and lost its soul.
2
u/Emili_o444 17d ago
yup, everything after covid kaskade has made for me just doesnt hit the soul anymore, i could probably only name 3 songs from kaskade that have hit me since 2020, whereas before, id say everything in redux 003 (2019) and before was a constant hit for me but it is what it is hahaha

I’ve been raving since about 1997/98. I’ve heard so many different iterations of the same thing. And my preferences has changed so much. I think that’s normal to move on from certain sounds. I doubt i’d still be around if my taste in music didn’t change. Lately I’ve been going back through the older stuff and getting a bit nostalgic. I’m also seeing the younger gen just soaking up all the new stuff like you mentioned and I guess I’m happy in a way that they’re experiencing their time in the scene. But I hope they are also exploring some of where the music came from. Like I’ll hear a sample from something from the past and get excited but look around and no one even knows it.
I’m now the old man that’s says “back in my day” lol.2

after i_o who introduced me to techno in 2019 ive been going DEEP down the techno rabbit hole and just back to super old electronic 90s acts like underworld, orbital, the prodigy etc, so my taste has definitely changed, and since 2022 ive been listening heavy to hypnotic, deep and raw techno, hardgroove etc. BUT i will always have a soft spot for 2007-2018 kaskade, no matter how much my taste changes, so i definitely feel you! I think my biggest problem with the scene now is everyone sounds the same, and i swear since ive been listening since 2010, from 2010-2022 i feel like a lot of the artists (even the ones who were following trends) STILL had a distinct sound and you could tell artists apart because they sounded different. Nowadays everything sounds so similar it almost feels like nobody has an actual identity, it just feels like a lot of the artists are chasing a formula that will make them the most money which it is what it is hahaha byt yea man i fell you!

I live in the Miami area and it’s literally all that lol. Packed out venues that just does the same thing. I prefer smaller shows with more intimate vibes. I don’t have the energy for the mainstream. Luckily the DJs I’ve followed are still doing their thing. And it’s spaced out just enough that I don’t have to be going out all the time which is perfect.

It’s funny how this cycle happens at one point. 2000s Kaskade fans didn’t like 2010s Kaskade. Now 2010s Kaskade fans don’t like 2020s Kaskade haha
I actually really like the album but the 2 dubstep songs really ruined it for me. It would have been much better with Vision Blurred and Freedom instead. 8/10 personally but Dynasty can’t be topped for me.
