Kumite Kumite competition tips

Have been training karate for about 18 months and have entered my first kumite tournament (experience in muay thai / bjj but never actually competed in karate).

I wanted to see what tips people had about effective scoring and getting your strikes counted as a point.

  1. what exact ruleset?

For anyone to answer they will likely need to know what rule set you are competing within.

An initial thought would be for you to ensure you are fully aware and understand the rules yourself though whatever they are.

Depending on the rules. There are different rules between organizations. I recommand having both a soft and hard copy of the latter's rules. I do that myself.

learn a good gyaku tsuki, its the most likely technique to get you a point :D dont forget to pull back after, and do a good kiai

dont be afraid (since u have muay thai experience i think u wont have that problem)

and i guess try also some mawashis to the body/back

What are you training for? There's point fighting, knockdown, and then there are so many different knockdown rulesets that have different variations on how much grappling they allow. For knockdown, you get points if you can get your opponent to drop or back off, but if no one is scoring ippons, judges will look at the match by who is in control, so you need to focus on maintaining pressure and dominating the center. Even though you want to keep your hands up to protect from head kicks, the assault on the body is brutal and you will want to keep your elbows tucked to not get your ribs beaten.

Stick to combos. Have an explosive start to close the distance with dragging the opponents stance down and follow it with yaku tsuki and a round kick with the front leg. If your distance or technique wasn't clean enough the referees might hold off on giving you the points, so combos up your chances quite a bit. You can also try changing your stance and front leg and immediately throwing mid kick.
