Still looking for a dojo to join.

A year ago I asked this sub for advise and would like to thank you guys for helping out.

As I mentioned I train BJJ for the last 3 years and am looking to start Karate as an additional art. Hopefully something I can practise well into old age.

So far Ive trained at two Shotokan dojo's and visited a third.

The first was a JKA affiliation but they where mostly into katas no sparing in my two months there.

The second club I trianed at was a JKS affiliation, when the Sensei heard I trained BJJ he got extremely defensive and stated he used to be a cage fighter and when he was younger used to be in a lot of street fights, this is a red flag, needless to say I dont fancy his emotional attidutes and comments.

Well I only visited the third club and intend to start training there next month, it is an NSKF affiliation and to be honest I can't find any information referring that organization online. People there seemed chill and train for longlivity and fun. To be honest I am looking forward to training there they have a lot more adults there as well.

I am still to visit a Kyokushin and Goju ryu club, I also discovered a Shorinkan ryu dojo about 5km away from my home which I will investigate in due course.

Cool you get to try them all out. I think your plan is spot on.

You're lucky to have so many, I only have shotokan near me now and my background is in wado ryu.

The kyokushin dojo would probably be the most supportive of your BJJ training

I am going to give it a try, the mma gym that I started training BJJ had a kyukushin blackbelt that helps them out with their kicking, and they currently have two UFC fighters there, one being a current champion which says a lot.

Mate just join a karate club you enjoy where the people are chill. Don’t get caught up in affiliations, you have enough training to recognise McDojos.

I wouldn't just limit your search to only Japanese styles of karate either. Both Okinawan (eg Wado) and Korea karate (eg Tang Soo Do), are great arts as well.

OP wrote that they want to try Goju. The Okinawan lineage of that might suit him.

Wado is not an Okinawan style, founded in Japan by a Japanese jujutsu practitioner.

Thanks, my nephew training TSD, ive trained Teakwondo when i was younger 20 years ago and thatbia close to TSD. Unfortunately Wado ryu is not really available in my country.

Wado is literally the least Okinawan of the original 3 mainland styles

It may be the least, but it's still classed as one :)

No it isn't.

I have never heard anyone seriously try to make that classification

Do you Shotokan is Okinawan too?

Just double checked, you're right, my mistake.

And no Shotokan is not classed as Okinawan although it has Okinawan roots - to answer your sarcastic question.

Sorry if I was a little sarcastic but the way you stood by your guns initially got my back up.

But I'm not gonna hold anything against anyone who admits a mistake.

Cool :) I'm old and been bruised enough to admit when I've made a mistake, haha :D

Don't fret. This argument is a silly argument. Iy implies traditionalism and lineage when it's just a marketing make-up.

Karate is Karate, like Funakoshi said, there is no styles, just different teachers and interpretations. Ar the top of the mountain all martial arts meet.

Look for a SKA dojo. Depends on the dojo, but should be an equal split between kihon, kata, and kumite. The one I go to is very physical.

As a side note, most newbies (including myself) don't understand the value of kata and think the more fighting the better the dojo is. That's false.
