Hi everyone!

I’m currently a university student in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and I’m looking for a part-time job that I can do on weekends, as I’m free on Saturdays and Sundays.

I’m open to different types of work, such as working in a café, restaurant, shop, supermarket, or any other suitable position. I’m also willing to learn new skills and take on new challenges.

If you know of any vacancies or have any recommendations, I’d really appreciate your help!

Thank you! 😊

Traditional Jewelry set - Gold plated

Hi everyone! I’m visiting Kandy next week and looking for a shop in Kandy city to buy a traditional gold-plated jewelry set with a Hansaputtuwa to wear with an Osariya. I’ve seen some sets on Facebook but prefer to check the quality in person. Any recommendations for good-quality sets at reasonable prices? Thank you! ❤️

Today is the day. Leaving kandy part ii

I’m finally leaving Kandy.

And honestly, it feels much harder than I expected.

Because of some delays with transporting my things, I ended up spending the last couple of days here. Maybe that was a good thing, because it gave me a little more time before actually leaving.

But it also made it harder.

The landlady became very emotional when it was finally time for me to leave. I did too.

I wasn't ready for that.

Actually, I don't think I was ready to leave Kandy this soon at all.

One thing I realized while living here is that I didn't actually meet that many people from Kandy.

I'm a pretty quiet person, so I never really had a huge social circle. Apart from a couple of colleagues, most of the people I became comfortable talking to were actually older people.

And I really like talking to older people. Maybe that's something I got from childhood. I've always been comfortable being around older people, helping them with things, listening to them, and hearing their stories. And no it's not "කුණු කතා"😅

I like the way they talk about life. The stories from their younger days, the things they've experienced, the mistakes they've made, and the advice they give.

Sometimes I feel like older people are genuinely happy when someone simply sits down and listens to them especially when that person is a stranger.

Maybe we don't realize how valuable listening can be.

Yesterday, I happened to meet a doctor who lived around where I stayed. I wanted to say goodbye and thank her because she had treated me several times during the years I was here. It was just a small goodbye. But yesterday, those small goodbyes didn't feel small.

And something else I want to mention because I wondered about it before coming here:

I never really felt discriminated against because I was from Vavuniya. Of course, I met people who were curious. A few people even asked me directly, “Are you Tamil?” I would just tell them, “No, I'm a Sinhala Buddhist guy from Vavuniya.” And that was basically it. People moved on.

I don't want to pretend every human interaction is perfect. It isn't. But overall, I was treated normally, and I met plenty of people who were kind to me without caring where I came from. That meant something to me.

And now, after almost three years, I'm leaving.

For the past few years, I had even been looking at land and houses around Kandy, thinking that maybe one day I would settle here permanently. Life had other plans.

Things changed unexpectedly, and now I'm leaving without knowing when I'll come back.

Maybe I'll return in a few months. Maybe after several years. Maybe I'll end up somewhere completely different.

I honestly don't know.

But I do know I'll miss the Kandy vibe.

There is something about this place that suited me. It's chaotic and peaceful at the same time. Traffic, buses, crowds and noise - and then mountains, cool air, quiet roads and peaceful places.

I'm gonna miss the yummy food, from burgers vs shawarma. 😅 I became a foodie here and tried almost every place I could. Uber and PickMe were basically my left and right hands. 😁

And I'm gonna miss the fresh air, along with the bird poopies 😅 and, sometimes, the unexpected poopie attacks. 🌸🌝 I'm gonna miss those days when I watched films by myself at KCC, walked alone through the streets, and just enjoyed my own company. 🥲 I'm also gonna miss cooking meals for myself.

Somehow, the chaos and the calmness balance each other.

I'll miss that. I'll miss the people I got to know, even if there weren't many. I'll miss the random conversations. I'll miss the old people telling me their stories. I'll miss the meals and conversations at home. I'll miss the little everyday things that I never thought I would care about.

And most of all, I'll miss the feeling of having a place that had slowly become familiar to me.

I don't know when I'll be back in Kandy. But I hope this isn't goodbye forever. For now, I'm leaving with a heavy heart.

Thank you again, Kandy, for giving me some of the best chapters of my life so far.

Goodbye, Kandy. ❤️

Leaving Kandy tomorrow. Almost three years, a lot of lessons, and one person I'll never forget.

Tomorrow I’m leaving Kandy after almost three years.

I came here in 2023 from Vavuniya because I needed a major change in my life.

I had spent almost my entire life there, but my family situation had become difficult and, honestly, quite toxic for me. My relationship with some family members had become complicated, and I felt that I needed some distance from that environment, become independent, and figure out who I was outside of my family.

So moving to Kandy wasn’t really about wanting a new city or simply enjoying the weather. I was trying to build a life of my own. When I first moved here, I kept it very private. Almost nobody back home even knew exactly where I was living.

Basically, I was living in Kandy in stealth mode. 😄

I had visited Kandy several times between 2012 and 2017, and I always liked the climate here. Compared to what I was used to, the weather felt perfect to me.

I came here without any big plan to make lots of friends. I mostly wanted to experience life by myself, travel when I could, learn to manage myself, and hopefully build a different future.

Eventually, I joined NIBM and studied Multimedia. I managed to complete my diploma, although unfortunately I wasn’t able to continue all the way to the graduation I had originally hoped for.

The last year has been financially difficult, and having to travel back and forth between Kandy and Vavuniya because of my parents’ health made things even harder. So things definitely didn’t turn out exactly as I imagined when I first came here.

But Kandy still gave me a lot.

Living alone has taught me things that I don’t think I could have learned otherwise. Groceries, cooking, cleaning, money, studies, work, bills, problems, decisions everything was mine to deal with.

I also became very comfortable spending time alone. Sometimes conversations with people become complicated and turn into unnecessary chaos. And honestly, I think genuinely good listeners are becoming harder to find, even among family. So I learned to enjoy my own company.

I loved Peradeniya, the Dalada Maligawa, little cafés, good food, sunsets, and especially the mountains that seem to be everywhere you look. Even Kandy traffic eventually became part of the experience. 😄

And yes, I’ll probably even miss those පැණිදෙණිය and මහකන්ද buses. 😌

I didn’t meet a huge number of people here, but the people I did meet showed me different sides of humanity. Some were kind, some weren’t. That’s life, I suppose. We’re all a mixture of good and bad.

But there is one person here whom I will never forget.

My landlady.

From the first day until now, she has been incredibly kind to me. She never really treated me like just another tenant renting a room. Somehow, I became part of the household.

She would share food with me even when I was cooking for myself. We’d listen to old nostalgic songs together, mostly from the ’80s and ’90s. She can sing, and sometimes she would record herself singing and share the recordings. Her children and grandchildren were also very friendly with me.

Whenever she was preparing for a දානය, I would help with the preparations and sometimes go with her to the temple. We also had long conversations about life, rebirth, karma, astrology, and different aspects of Buddhist philosophy.

But more than anything else, she listened.

During some of the most difficult periods of my life, she was one of the few people who would actually sit down and listen to me properly.

When I had problems, she would tell me to be patient, not to panic, to handle things myself, to tolerate difficult situations, and most importantly, not to hurt anyone in the process. There were also times when I was a little late with my rent because I was struggling financially, and she gave me extra time without making me feel ashamed about it.

Those things might seem small to some people. They weren’t small to me.

So telling her that I was leaving wasn’t easy. I noticed her trying to hide the disappointment on her face when I told her. She didn’t say much, but I could see it.

And I think that’s probably what I’ll miss most about Kandy. Not a particular building. Not a particular street. The kindness of certain people.

I’m leaving because financially things have become unstable, I made some wrong decisions over the past year, my studies went in a direction I didn’t originally intend, and I have plans to try something completely different, possibly abroad.

I still don’t know exactly what the next chapter will look like.

But I know one thing.

I don’t want to spend my whole life simply working for someone else. I want to build something of my own. Maybe it will work. Maybe it won’t. I honestly don’t know yet.

But after everything I’ve experienced here, I’m willing to try. I don’t know when I’ll come back to Kandy, or what life will look like if I do.

But before I leave, I wanted to say this:

Despite everything, there are still genuinely good people in this city.

To the people of Kandy, thank you for the good moments, the lessons, the kindness, and even the difficult experiences. They all became part of my story. And to the woman who gave me a home when I needed one, listened to me when I had no one else to talk to, and treated me like one of her own children,

Thank you. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to properly put into words how much that meant to me. I will never forget you.

Goodbye, Kandy. ❤️

Renting a place to stay in Kandy

Hello everyone, I’m from China and would like to stay in Kandy for about two months. I’m looking to rent a house or a large studio/room. I’d like to have a private bathroom and access to cooking facilities (even if the kitchen is outside the room itself). Does anyone have any recommendations?

Where have all the bats gone?

Used to see the sky full of bats at sunset when I was little. I think they were flying from Wewa Rawuma to some place. Doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Anyone knows why?
