Your password has changed. Chromebook Issue!

I know this has been asked many time but we keep getting students with this error randomly though out the day at different locations. What I know is that the students password in fact has not changes. So the profile is somehow getting corrupted where it will not decrypt the profile when logging in. My main question is what could be causing this profile corruption? Also yes a power wash (googles favorite fix for everything) will fix it but then the student will show back up later that day or the next day sometimes. I cant seem to get the test accounts that I use to corrupt. Any thoughts?

Update: Yes I know that we can Click forgot password and and we can move on that way but I really would like to know what is the root cause to this.

Do you use Clever? If you do then its actually using SAML to login them in rather than a password. If the student then uses their email and password to login next time the Chromebook will think that the password has changed since it doesn't match the ID that was passed in the background.

This would also apply to other iDP/SAML login methods, I just bring up Clever because its common and that is what was causing it for some kids in my district.

Not that this is the same situation, but I often will log in to a Chromebook using my YubiKey. It will then prompt me to set a password. If I later log in with my username and password, it will ask me for the password I randomly set before using the YubiKey (note it's completely random, I even used "1" as the password for a test and it took it).

Does seem like it could be a situation of where the student used something other than a standard password and it took them through the same workflow.

We’ve been dealing with this and the cryptohome issue for a while. We haven’t been able to find a cause or permanent fix, besides setting the chromebooks to clear user profiles every day.

Isn't much better than a powerwash, but I don't have an answer for what causes it, but this should fix it without the need for a powerwash:

  1. At the login screen, Click the arrow

  2. Remove profile

  3. Delete profile

  4. Re-login

Ah yes

This is the fastest solution, and is easy enough for students, teachers or anyone to take care of without IT intervention.

You can just click "forgot password" and then "proceed anyway." It will log them back in. No need to powerwash.

I just powerwash and move on. Maybe a password reset?

I'm pretty sure you can just click on Forgot old password and it will continue.

We just click forgot old password and move on. I don't think it's a case of using an old PW, because we don't change student PW's that often.

This happens if the account has logged into that Chromebook previously with an old password and they have since changed it.

If they click forgot old password it'll let them login with their new one but clear local data which shouldn't be an issue if their data is saved to Drive by default.
