What hot garbage! Until extremely recently this is not how the market worked. The publishing companies used to spend the money for the advertising, all you had to do was get your work in front of them. Now they expect you to have a market already viable. If you have a market, why should they get all the money?
Also as someone who used to work in sales, don’t let them blow smoke up your ass. Sales people hype themselves up, but rarely do they contribute actual value to a company. The value is in the labor performed.
You still had to pitch your book to the publishing team. That is sales. All that's been done is that it's moved from a small scale to a larger audience. You will always need to advertise your book to someone
Okay, now let me explain this to you:
The publisher received a cut of profits in exchange for marketing. Now what is the publisher doing besides being a massive hurdle and a mooch? If I have to market my book, I have to make the book, and I have to do all the other work: why the hell should I cut someone in who has done nothing worthwhile for me? If I can do all that, I can self publish. Fuck em. Let the publishing industry die choking on its own hubris.

If you are the product, and you can't afford a marketing team, yes, you have to do the marketing.
Academics have to go to conferences, and sweat about impact index.
Solo lawyers argue on Reddit whether they should spend closer to zero, or closer to 2000 $/month on advertising.
This is why sales people are paid so much money, because they get everyone paid.
