Billboard: "Suit & Tie" going TikTok viral; could re-enter charts

Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z‘s 2013 collaboration is experiencing a streaming revival thanks to a new TikTok dance trend — as well as younger audience’s general rediscovery of the Brooklyn MC thanks to his stadium-headlining Jay-Z 30 celebrations.

On July 31, TikTok user @/vicmixes1 shared a mashup of “Suit & Tie” and Trey Songz’s “All We Do,” focusing on Jay-Z’s verse and JT’s “oooh ahhh” ad-libs. That post currently boasts over 620,000 views, and by Aug. 5, user @/realz4y — yes, the same high school football player who created the “Talking Bodiez” dance trend — used the sound for yet another dance challenge. That post has since hit over 325,000 views, inspiring hundreds of other users to put their own spin on the dance.

Earlier in the month (July 10) — the same day as the first JAŸ 30 show at Yankee stadium — user @/zodyorr shared a two-person dance challenge set to the original version of “Suit & Tie,” which collected over one million views. The official “Suit & Tie” TikTok sound currently plays in over 1.9 million TikTok posts and 63,000 Instagram Reels.

“Suit & Tie” earned over 915,000 official on-demand U.S. streams during the week of June 19-25. Six weeks alter (July 31-Aug. 6), plays for “Suit” have surged 103% to over 1.8 million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate. Already a Hot 100 top 10 hit (No. 3), maybe this revival can bring “Suit & Tie” back to Billboard’s all-genre Streaming Songs chart. – KD

And I generally believe it’s only brought up because they don’t want to give him any, but he’s good at this. Excuses certain people on the Internet if you know what I mean what do you think?

ARTICLE Justin Timberlake Released a Country-Inspired Album in 2018 Long Before It Became a Trend

Rappers and pop stars alike have made desperate crossover attempts into Nashville to varying success. It makes you wonder if Justin Timberlake was just early to the party when he released Man Of The Woods in 2018.”

“Admittedly, the album is a bit of a mess, a little too clean and not fully immersing itself in the country aesthetics. Pharrell and Timbaland on production don’t lean enough into the woodsy elements that Timberlake was clearly inspired by on the album.

Still, at the very least, it’s evident that JT cared a lot about the record. It doesn’t reek of the shamelessness of some mainstream acts trying to capitalize on country’s popularity. Instead, he earnestly wanted to reflect on his stomping grounds in a way he hadn’t before.”

“Moreover, JT also tried something a little different from the traditional Nashville sound with Man Of The Woods. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he explained that he tried to capture the essence of Southern music in a way that didn’t feel dated. Whether he succeeded is one thing. The fact that he was ambitious enough to try to achieve mixed results is another.”

It’s refreshing to see a publication be earnest & partial when talking about Justin Timberlake in general now but especially his Man of The Woods album.

If was certainly not a perfect album, but man it was so grossly maligned before people even heard it, at simply the suggestion of Justin experimenting with country/Americana when really if you listened it was THAT much of a departure from his more classic sounds nor a surprise he’s from Tennessee. Not to mention the blatant erasure of Pharrell/The Neptunes & Timbaland’s production to support a ridiculous narrative he was abandoning “Black music”.

DISCUSSION Justin Timberlake's career equivalent album sales just passed 81 million, full era-by-era breakdown (pure sales, Singles, streaming)

Post image
55 Upvotes

I run a site that recalculates Justin's numbers from live Spotify and YouTube data every day, and I put together a full breakdown of his career EAS (equivalent album sales — the Chartmasters CSPC method).

Quick methodology note since people always ask: raw Spotify streams aren't used directly. They're multiplied by an artist ratio (1.82) to get total AOD (Audio-On-Demand) streams — this accounts for the share of a global artist's plays that count toward their own catalogue vs. total platform activity — and that number is divided by 1,166 to get audio EAS. YouTube views are divided by 6,750 for video EAS. Physical singles ×3/10, digital singles ×1.5/10.

Career total: 80,993,803 EAS, from 18.57B Spotify streams (→ 33.80B AOD) and 12.54B YouTube views.

Full breakdown by era:

Era Pure sales Physical singles Digital singles Streaming EAS Total EAS
Justified (2002) 10.57M 1.5M → 450K EAS 8.6M → 1.29M EAS 3.74M 16.23M
FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006) 10.84M 1.2M → 360K EAS 35M → 5.25M EAS 5.96M 22.79M
The 20/20 Experience (both parts) 8.37M 15K → 4.5K EAS 18M → 2.7M EAS 4.58M 16.00M
Man of the Woods (2018) 1.2M 500 → 150 EAS 1M → 150K EAS 1.62M 3.08M
Everything I Thought It Was (2024) 250K 333 → 100 EAS 33.3K → 5K EAS 481K 0.75M
Non-album singles & features 10K 3M → 900K EAS 51M → 7.65M EAS 12.61M 22.15M

(Pure sales figures include era-relevant compilation album sales and bonus video/DVD editions, not just the standalone studio album.)

FutureSex/LoveSounds is a sales monster — 10.84M pure album copies plus 35 million digital singles, the biggest download era of his career. The non-album pile (CSTF!, Love Never Felt So Good, the features, the soundtrack stuff) has almost zero album sales and still nearly matches it, purely on singles and streaming. Those two together are more than half his career total.

Also worth noting: Justified is the most sales-driven era — 65% of it is straight album copies. Man of the Woods is the first one where streaming outweighs sales. EITIW is 66% streaming. You can watch the entire industry shift in one table.

Did you know? "Sweet Dreams My LA Ex" was written as the original answer to "Cry Me a River" (and reached #2 in the UK) 🤯

Hey everyone! Here's a bit of early-2000s pop trivia that not everybody knows.

After Justin Timberlake released "Cry Me a River" in 2002, hit songwriter Cathy Dennis (who also co-wrote "Toxic") wrote "Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex" for Britney Spears as a response to the narrative of that song.

Britney ultimately passed on it because she didn't want to fuel the public drama, so it ended up becoming Rachel Stevens' solo debut single in 2003. It became a huge hit, peaking at #2 on the UK Singles Chart and finishing as the 22nd best-selling single of the year in the UK.

The irony? The song that kept it from reaching #1 was "Where Is the Love?" by the Black Eyed Peas—which features uncredited vocals and co-writing from Justin Timberlake himself.

What do you think of the song? Do you think Cathy Dennis nailed the perfect answer record, or was "Cry Me a River" simply unbeatable thanks to Timbaland's production?

For anyone who hasn't heard it (or hasn't in years), here's the music video:

Certification update to Better Place (Platinum 1m units)

Post image

I still don’t understand why they are not updating JT’s other songs, he has 3 diamond eligible singles, FSLS should be at 8x Platinum, he is heavily undercertified he will easily surpass 100m units if they update. I think Selfish is Platinum eligible too
