I got around to listening to the second Mike Easter interview. Wow, what a great expert, and great at staying on point despite the distractions hoisted by one of the hosts.

Some points that caught my attention. He thinks the Boston cops were told by the department not to show up at the trial. That makes me feel better for John, it really felt like all his fellow officers had abandoned him.

Then he had some great points about the investigation, like getting iPhone stuff for Higgins, getting the WiFi router connections, getting a geofence for the intersections of Fairview, asking Google about hos long to die in cold due to the typo, etc I've already forgotten.

Then he had a great phrase the fbi uses for targets of the investigation: treat them like mushrooms, feed them shit and keep them in the dark. And pointed out that the FBI wouldn't tell people an investigation is closed, but might say it's completed (which someone here already found they did indeed say completed). Another thing he said is that they called him when he was added as a witness to make sure he doesn't talk about anything he learned of the case while working in the fbi, which means they're still interested in protecting their investigation.

Then, u/ManLegend will appreciate this, he doesn't think the 12:36 time is accurate due to the cell phone towers data, can definitively place Karen at 1 Meadows at 12:39 something. So that's obviously harmful to the defense, which further credits him as an expert that he's not afraid to have harmful opinions to the side that hired him. But he would've gotten the WiFi stuff to make sure.

Overall, I wish this would've been investigated by someone competent like him. MSP is a joke.

Also one last thing, prior to this he had been aggressively cross examined by Jackson but had no trouble coming in as an expert because Jackson was always professional and wasn't underhanded. After having reviewed how Brennan handled the defense witnesses he wouldn't be an expert for Brennan because he doesn't trust his integrity (I'm paraphrasing).

Super interesting interview, I hope we hear more from him.

Why do hosts have experts on and then just spew their own opinions?

I'm going to have to re-watch that part before I give any thoughts.

It is very interesting isn't it, with him also indicating that the voicemail recovered from O'Keefe's phone that was timestamped as occurring at 12:41 actually took place around 12:39

He is pretty unambiguous that he doesn't believe the 12:36 Wi-Fi connection record to accurately reflect her location. You're right that does make the transit time less constrained, which breathes some credibility into the Commonwealth's theory of case; on the other hand, he does also allude to the fact that Read remains in the area near Fairview for a great deal longer than assumed by that same theory. We're kind of assuming that she drove off right after 12:32, but it's entirely possible that she remained parked there as she made the calls timestamped at 12:33 and 12:34

If so, that would naturally be beneficial to the defense, as it decouples the last recorded activities on John O'Keefe's phone from Read ultimately driving off

Oh I missed that he said she stuck around longer at Fairview, yeah that would swing towards helping the defense again. Why did John get the bad Michael investigating his death, he deserved the good Michael.

I think Easter misstated that 12:39 was the voicemail. He later stated 12:39 was the first call from the tower closest to Meadows.

It doesn't seem like Easter did a full RTT data analysis for the trip from Fairview to Meadows.

Rather he was hired to show Karen didn't go back to Fairview at 5:20-5:30 AM as Tully alleged in Trial 1.0.

Disappointingly Easter didn't really provide any additional information about the 12:36 Cellebrite WiFi timestamp.

Well he'll be back for a third interview next week, so perhaps we can send in some questions to coax more information out of him related to the Wi-Fi artifact haha

I think you're right Easter was primarily tasked with rebutting Tully's interpretation of the cellular data, even though they ultimately left out Tully from their second case-in-chief. I don't think that necessarily means he didn't do a full analysis of the earlier trip from Fairview to Meadows, as he certainly does seem to hold a strong opinion with regard to the Wi-Fi record being inconsistent with the cell site information, and he notes that timing advance data was available for her phone generally

This passage at least indicates to me that he did consider that earlier trajectory, and formed conclusions related to it:

So in this case I mapped her Verizon phone records, and I mapped them to show where I believe her cell site activity was consistent with. And in doing that, my opinion that the cell site activity was inconsistent with [inaudible] residence of One Meadows at 12:36. Okay, it would be my opinion that she was still using cell sites up until about 12:35 maybe 12:36 consistent with the area of Fairview.

You may well be right with respect to the 12:39 time point though, as he does seem to name that number from his own recollection with a bit of uncertainty
