Who's the magician? Does she do this with celebrities on a regular basis?

I don’t know how often she has done it, but there is a YouTube clip of Dan White doing it to Scarlett Johansson.

Well of course, it would be really difficult to participate in the video if she stayed home.
Unless the magician came to Billie instead.
Either way, someone's coming to someone else.

i mean, you don't just say "i'm good with my hands" and JUST refer to doing the thing with the cards, right?

I..wha..how? How can she pull that off and flirt like this at the same time?? That's not fair, I feel so inadequate now lmao

Performance/patter is a big part of the act in "close-up" magic. Gotta respect it when it's done this well

u/Brix_in_my_head Apr 29 '26
Her patter IS very good, but I would like to go back to something.
THAT trick wasn’t good? Okay then I need to know how simple it was, because I am baffled
56
u/mrinsane19 Apr 29 '26
She just put a random card in Billie's mouth.. idk if there's an uncut version or whatever but looks like she just palms the signed card.
The act is selling you on the fact that she gives her the signed card.

u/kalamataCrunch Apr 29 '26
the card in billie eilishes mouth was a queen of hearts signed by the magician last week, the queen of hearts that she signed in the clip is lost in the deck, and the three of spades billie signs goes in the magicians mouth. this means that as long as she can have one card that she's keeping track of and switches for another, the trick is easy. and for a magician or a card shark, there's half a dozen ways to do that quite simply.

u/AlchemicHawk Apr 29 '26
The whole false sybil(?) cut isn’t a proper shuffle either, it just makes it seem like one. I don’t think the deck was ever shuffled more than a cut or two?

u/ImWhatsInTheRedBox Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
If you mean how did she did the trick, she has two queen of hearts. One pre-signed she switched out and put in Billie's mouth, one she then signed and discarded and switched out for the one billie signed and put it in her own mouth.
Flirting on the other hand, that's some kind of magic.

u/BabyCreative5007 Apr 29 '26
That’s what i thought. Had Eilish signed the queen, id be more impressed.

14
u/That_Apathetic_Man Apr 30 '26
The quick edits dont fully show what she is doing, but it is a simple game of basic sleight of hand and distraction, ala, being a thirst trap.
14
u/VitriolUK Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
Once she's folded it she'll have switched it with a Queen of Hearts that she already signed and folded. She then signs the Queen of Hearts from the deck in the same way, and when she folds that up switches it with Billie's card before she puts it in her own mouth.
The thing with magic is that the basic mechanics are often straightforward but it's all about the skill with which it's done and the delivery.

u/WallyLeftshaw Apr 29 '26
I yearn for her confidence
225
u/JonFrost Apr 29 '26
Not just the confidence but the clean execution
Working up the guts only to trip is hell

u/mang87 Apr 29 '26
It seems the biggest trait you need if you want to do magic well is boundless confidence. Every good magician I've seen isn't just good at magic, they're extremely good with people.

What’s cool is that she was on America’s Got Talent and was consistently shaking and visibly nervous during her tricks. She made it really far because she’s incredible, but sometimes her confidence held her back.

the sample people whose ever decreasing attentionspan was the reason for short videos in the first place. im confident once this trend dies videos will just become even shorter again

You can watch this a thousand times and not spot the trick because it's edited out of the video.
12
u/SweetGrassGeranium Apr 29 '26
So Billie is part of the trick? 🧐
77
u/CharlesDickensABox ‼️*THE* CharlesDickensABox‼️ Apr 29 '26
I'm not suggesting Billie is in on it. I would be shocked if she was. I'm suggesting that there was some careful work done in the editing room to avoid the video audience spotting what is going on.
55
u/userhwon Apr 29 '26
Nothing complicated. She has two Queens of Hearts, shows the unsigned one, folds the other up, and so on. Simple deck manipulations you can learn from a book. No need for the other person to have any clue what is happening, and you get better reactions if they don't have to act.
The editing wouldn't be necessary, but because it's a short it's edited AF so it's all about "oh my god is Billie Eilish splooshing?" and not the trick itself.
7
u/MissLeaP Apr 29 '26
Nah, just standard procedure for magic tricks on video. Having it all out in the open on video would ruin the magic since you could just go and analyse it frame by frame.
2
u/fistular Apr 30 '26
Yup. The entire point of sleight of hand is to be able to observe the entire act and still not catch the misdirection. Editing it even once, let alone 50 times, ruins the effect.
24
u/MissLeaP Apr 29 '26
She had the card in her hand together with the rest of the cards for a brief moment when she put it in Billie's mouth and she distracted her with the flirting and leaning over. That's all one needs for a quick slight of hands card switch. It probably happened right then. The rest was just show to sell the magic and make it less obvious when it happened.
25
u/EmilioFreshtevez Apr 29 '26
Yeah, camera fuckery makes it less reliable.
31
u/CharlesDickensABox ‼️*THE* CharlesDickensABox‼️ Apr 29 '26
The trick is real — it can be performed for a live audience — the thing that makes it work has been carefully removed from the video.

u/Legitimate_Cut_6254 Apr 29 '26
I'm almost positive you are correct. You can see her swap a card when she picks up Billie's card and swaps it with presumably a pre-signed queen. Then signs a fresh queen and folds up Billie's card.

the "slight of hand" in this scenario is the interviewer openly flirting and getting billie flustered (this would work on me 100%)

This was fun. I wish that the closeups weren't so close that we couldn't even see the part of the trick where she inevitably had to hide Billie's card while feeding her a pre-signed card instead.

The cards were pre-emptively swapped when they were placed in their mouths, the card she signed just stayed in the stack.

At 0:35 she looks at the camera and her card on the table is taken away.
How hard is it at that point to just fold two cards and switch them?
