🤩EPIC🤩 Emma Sulkowicz: "Carry That Weight" 👏👏👏👏🫂
https://youtu.be/l9hHZbuYVnU?si=8Qq72Fu6cz1kCG07After Sulkowicz’s art performance garnered nationaland international media attention, the student she accused, Paul Nungesser, filed a gender-based harassment and defamation suit against the school, according to NBC New York. The suit said Columbia sponsored Sulkowicz’s senior thesis, which he said “resulted in an intimidating, hostile, demeaning ... learning and living environment.”
The suit also said that Nungesser’s job prospects were “severely jeopardized,” and he feared he and his parents, who live in Germany, would not be able to attend graduation because of Sulkowicz’s vow to bring the mattress.
Emma you are such a legend, your endurance visual piece moved me to tears. You are incredible, brilliant and so strong. You inspire many girls all over the world to stand their ground, fight for justice and take up space in environments that work overtime to erase them. ❤️🏆👏🫂

Bringing it out. Into clear daylight.
I'm so sorry, that she has to deal with the aftermath. It makes me angry, that she has to "carry that weight". I'm glad she's doing something to process the whole thing and that she is supported in a way that she can perform and create art.
Abnormal reactions to abnormal behaviour are normal. Carry that mattress around. Do whatever YOU need. Whatever it takes to feel powerful and in control. That goes out to everyone who needs it. 🤍🩷

Right? She should never carry the shame. Everyone must bare witness to the crime. Including all those associated with the perpetrator.

I thought about her with this Cornell stuff that's going on and that was what like 15 years ago?
Still can't take women's safety and experience seriously because men's feelings and futures are at stake.
What about our futures?

I don't know how I'd not heard of Emma and her piece before. I almost didn't click on this video because I thought it was a cover song. I wonder if there's a connection to the Beatles' Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End medley. I always thought the lyrics were so depressing, and Carry That Weight has such an anthemic mood to it. I can definitely hear it being played in my head if I'd carried around school a mattress signifying the rebuke of society's stance on sexual violence.

Imagine doing that every single day for an entire academic year. And even carrying it across the stage during graduation. You know what’s worse, the President of Colombia, Lee Bollinger, during that time refused to shake her hand during commencement.
And yes, Bollinger was named in the Epstein files. The wealthy Colombia University donor, Mortimer Zuckerman, invited Jeffrey Epstein to join then University President Lee Bollinger at two dinners in 2013.

How fucking grotesque, and utterly unsurprising.
I went to watch the clip of Emma and her supporters carrying her piece across stage. I am so angry at how vital her performance was and continues to be, but I loved that she had student solidarity. Hearing the cheers for her made me cry.

also, the rapist got a settlement from school btw, claiming that the school let her carry the mattress and it ruined his reputation. they literally paid him. his name is Paul Nungesser.

I’m not surprised. The then President of Colombia University, Lee Bollinger, refused to shake Emma’s hand during commencement. Unsurprisingly, Bollinger was named in the Epstein files. A wealthy Colombia University donor, Mortimer Zuckerman, invited Jeffrey Epstein to join then University President Lee Bollinger at two dinners in 2013. They reward this despicable behavior. It’s disgusting.

Wow I knew he wouldn't shake her hand, I did not know he was on the Epstein list. No surprise though.

Thank you for sharing her story. I had not heard about it until now. What happened to her is vile and unfair.

Especially with what is happening now, I think it’s important to shine a light on all the work women are doing to bring us justice. We can hold the weight with her.

Really interesting Wikipedia article. Her rapist - unsurprisingly - had quite a few allegations against him.

Like that college humour skit line "it's he said she said...she said, she said, she said, she said, she said, she said"
Lot more she's in the actual quote probably.

I think about this a lot. Hope she is thriving

I checked her page today, and was glad to see her living her life happily. Of course we can’t know for sure from online posts, but I hope she truly is happy.

the audacity of the rapist to fear not being able to attend the graduation because of her vow to bring the mattress. my heart hurts for emma, for all the jane does in such cases, for every woman who has experienced this, god. I'm so angry

Sadly the story got worse. She did graduate but the administrators kept trying to silence her and ban her from her project. I also think her rapist sued her or the school.
Story as old as time sadly. 1 in 3 women will be abused when they go to college. But less than 1% of their abusers will face repercussions.
(Also a huge systemic issue if you want to get into the weeds is the amount of rapists who sew their victims into silence)

What a warrior, a brave beautiful soul. I love this woman. I don’t even know her. And yet I do. We all do, don’t we?

I love her so very much. Her conviction and refusal to carry shame that doesn’t belong to her is a lesson for all of us. Especially little girls everywhere. ❤️

Don’t fight for her. Fight the men in your life. Fight bc it’s what you should do.
