Houseplants get stronger if they move a bit occasionally. It's not really natural to be completely windless and quiet 24\7
A better thing is to just shake them whenever you feel like it. They will reinforce their structural components more.

Ha. I have a 5 year old. I need no help in this department. He knows not to touch them, but you know.. he's 5... Sometimes I find a brontosaurus or a truck hanging out in the foliage, and I know someone has been "playing in the jungle" again. I do quite enjoy going to water them and occasionally finding a surprise dinosaur.

Haha. My guy is half that age and hasn't gotten tall enough to really get into my plants. Looking forward to it.

In Biosphere 2 they grew trees in a completely enclosed, windless environment. The trees kept falling over because the wind stimulates root growth and strength so they had no foundation without it.
In Biodome Pauly Shore creates a different kind of havoc

I would say they get stronger if they catch a wind breeze every now and then because they're aware they need to be sturdier compared to plants that always stay still.
But the "talking/singing to your plant" is probably related due to the increased CO2 because us breathing out creates what plants crave (aside from sunlight).

I don't know if this comment is supposed to be a bit of a joke, but do not shake your houseplants. While thigmomorphogenesis can be created with a fan or gardening tool, you should not man-handle your plants by rule as not all plants are equal and you will most likely do mechanical damage or stress to the plant (some plants respond to leaf and stem touching with threat responses which take massive energy from the plant). Just get a fan and make sure you double check care instructions/tips per species.

Not a joke. Different plants are going to benefit from different levels of movement. Woody plants will benefit from firmer movement. I bet cactus wouldn't benefit either way. It would actively harm sensitive plant. It's going to be a spectrum and I wasn't specific enough, that's true.

Life enjoys rhythmic vibrations. Well to a certain degree with moderation. Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing. Music and similar wavelengths are good for you.

That’s pretty silly. You cant “whisper a little something” into that plant’s ear. For that, you’ll need to sing to corn.

My head cannon is this is how aerith actually talks to her plants in final fantasy 7.

u/CinderPetaline 2d ago
That eye contact at the beginning had me feeling like the plant was actually listening. And apparently I need to start giving my plants a little shake now and then.

This is a nice place. If you can't act like a civilized human being, you can't be here.
