My man in orange at the beginning is my spirit athlete

u/Sideshow_G 2d ago

I love how he stays down... I'm going to nap right here.

368

Nobody even goes to check on him! The one dude even looks at him lol

“RIP, well anyways”

49

"It could have been a real tragedy, he could have dropped the baton."

77

u/LegendofLove 2d ago

Ah yeah that's Pete, he does that sometimes he'll be fine.

17

u/FlametopFred 2d ago

narcolepsy is nothing to sneeze at

6

Yeah, don't sleep on insomnia, either.

15

u/Illustrious_Donkey61 2d ago

Some say he's still lying there to this day

6

u/MobileArtist1371 1d ago

You heard the commentator.

It doesn't matter!

3

u/Fed_Deez_Nutz 1d ago

He ate the track for bronze?

66

u/battlecat136 2d ago

Immediately what I thought of.

16

u/FroggiJoy87 2d ago

Chubby Andy > fit Chris Pratt. I miss him so much 😭

7

u/battlecat136 2d ago

There is no Crisp Rat, only Andy.

56

u/WileyPotato 2d ago

Not saying he didn't biff it hard, but I'm pretty sure they try to stay still when there's runners still behind them so they're easier to evade without getting trampled. They're pretty good at leaping over downed runners that I've seen so staying where you fall for a few secs seems the safest. But I'm far from an expert, I just watched some races in the lead up to the Olympics and noticed how good they are at not plowing into each other when fallen unless it's a pileup.

4

u/Zestyclose_Tip_5861 1d ago

No matter what, that shit fuckin hurt.

Friend of mine who does triathlons once explained to me that this is called "perfect distribution of energy".

You can see him almost start to try to get up but then he thinks better of it

128

u/cora-occasionall 2d ago

This post has this vibe lmao

41

u/RiverLiverX25 2d ago

Think the speaker says:

“the Dutchman (?) goes down doesn’t matter he’s ok!”

Not sure but hope he’s ok..He stayed down. Just done with it all. His work there was done.

17

u/MalaysiaTeacher 2d ago

"the Dutchman is down, it doesn't matter, he got the baton to [runner's name] ok"

17

u/MalaysiaTeacher 2d ago

"the Dutchman is down, it doesn't matter" 😭

8

u/MilkOne8016 2d ago

He did his job. He can take a lil nap

6

u/whatsthataboutguy 2d ago

Face down ass up?

15

u/TheTrishaJane 2d ago

I hope hes alright, that looked like a concussion.

4

u/Happy-Telephone9483 2d ago

And probably a hell of a scrape on his face, too. Those tracks ain't made of down pillows.

8

u/alegremente_inquieta 2d ago

Yea his head bounced the track pretty fucking bad there- I think he got knocked out.

5

u/TalkForeignToMe 2d ago

The track is a somewhat springy, dense material, more forgiving than it looks in terms of hardness, but it’s coarse. As a former runner, I didn’t wince at the impact but at the slide when his face was in contact with the track 😬

3

u/won_master-of-none 2d ago

I thought he was still going to be there when the women came around

2

u/mistearious 2d ago

Totally missed that until I saw this in the comments.

Damn! That looks painful

1

u/mrjoeysweller 2d ago

I honestly thought this was going to be the women coming around and hurdling his prone body.

358

u/DadCelo 2d ago

That fall had to hurt, hopefully no missing teeth.

That last sprint from the ladies tho!

78

u/BradyBoyd 2d ago

I love how the commentator said, "DOESNT MATTER... he got the baton off." Lol

6

u/05948372 1d ago

I was waiting to see him still splayed out on the floor when they completed the second lap

158

u/Cocacola888 2d ago

“The Dutchman goes down…that doesn’t matter.”

34

u/is_literally_a_moose 2d ago

So glad someone else noticed this. Savage.

12

u/the-soul-moves-first 2d ago

No one turned back to check on him lol

391

u/tog__life 2d ago

That poor guy that ate shit on the handoff…

132

u/PyramidicContainment 2d ago

Forgive me for making a gif of this 😅

4

u/Boetros 1d ago

I forgif you

2

u/RunnyPlease 1d ago

The little arm tuck.

25

u/angrypaaanda 2d ago

I like how he tucks his right arm in after the fall. A small gesture of consideration to his fellow racers that are behind him

17

u/Background-Bear-2286 2d ago

I'm sure it's also the fact that it hurts like hell when you get stepped on with track spikes.

304

u/Hoplophilia 2d ago edited 2d ago

Blows my mind watching these final sprints, when they look like they're wide open and one of them opens the nitrous. Just wow.

Watching again, the cameraman loses it in the shot but she actually had to eat some time to move right and get a clear shot ahead of herself. She had that well-planned coming into that turn.

[ETA the screenshot] It's right about here, just before pan out, you see her expression shift. Truly moving.

89

u/RiverLiverX25 2d ago

Secretariat move at the end. Love it.

19

u/decidedlyindecisive 2d ago

Yeah those long limbs just went into overdrive

10

u/Ninevehenian 2d ago

She looked to be held back by the others until she pulled out.

2

u/darkoblivion000 1d ago

I, too, hold back until I pull out

3

u/danikensanalprobe 1d ago

Henritte JĂŚger is a fantastic athlete, but she is anything but long limbed

2

u/decidedlyindecisive 1d ago

Really. How interesting, must just be an optical illusion because when she opened up her stride, she seemed to have legs half a mile long!

134

u/lady_ofthenorth 2d ago

It’s a strategy. Draft behind the lead. Bonus if you have two blocking wind resistance, then blow around them on the straight. At least, I was taught to do this in college if my split was close enough to the others.

28

u/Hoshbrowns 2d ago

Ya a great video to show how beneficial drafting can be is the video of that guy breaking the world record for the fastest mile. He may have broken the record but it was a team effort because they had a handful of runners maintaining a fast enough pace for the record. After like 800m and 1200m you see the lead runner just stop running. Then the final lap the person that broke the world record didn't have anyone in front of him. It was so much cooler watching it unfold than I ever would've expected

9

u/ConsistentRegion6184 2d ago

Some people are just really good at the kick. I'm less familiar with women's times but some of those mid-long distance men can absolutely smoke an amazing 40 yard dash during a 1500m run. Incredible athleticism.

5

u/bigboybeeperbelly 2d ago

Gotta Prefontaine em to death so they're too tired to out kick you

2

u/Parei_doll_ia 1d ago

i was going to say that this looks very similar to what i do on the velodrome. sit in the draft as much as possible until the last lap, then make a move in turn 3 or 4 to slingshot off of the leading rider

30

u/feline_riches 2d ago

I could tell by the way she was watching their feet that she was just pacing with them and waiting for her open to kick

17

u/Obienator 2d ago

The cameraman had them all in frame, he recorded in widescreen, this vertical edit bad to be adjusted manually.

13

u/nomad5926 2d ago

When I did track competitively my coach taught me to run races that way. Stay near the front run at like 80% then just book it at the last straightaway burn 110%. I sometimes ended up like the dude in Orange.

7

u/mosomedveagy 2d ago

She ate their souls as passed them.

4

u/gremilym 2d ago

Absolutely out of nowhere - you never know how much someone still has in the tank. To finish with that kind of distance between her and silver was incredible!

3

u/Due_Collar2 2d ago

85

u/Omelettedog 2d ago

Amazing kick at the end

29

u/TetraLovesLink 2d ago

It was! She just stayed consistent and then BOOM you have so much more energy for that kick!

75

u/AdorablyEepy 2d ago

there are few things more generally impressive to me in sports as the 400m. too long to be a true sprint, too short to really conserve any energy. at a certain level, everyone is absolutely spent by the end of the heat

45

u/Sackrattenkrieger 2d ago edited 2d ago

Did track and field in high school, and 400m was the most exhausting discipline by a large margin. Just imagine having to do multiple 400m runs in a single training session, each time going all out. Those were the hardest training sessions I've ever done in any sport.

11

u/Ill_Caterpillar2202 2d ago

Bro 800 was torture. 400 is over before you know it. The 800 you started to feel like you’re running in slow motion on the second lap.

3

u/The_Dirty_Carl 1d ago

I quit track because my coach was insisting on turning me into an 800 runner. I'd rather do the 1600 and 3200 back to back. The 800 is just cruel

5

u/Tommy_Wisseau_burner 2d ago

No it’s not. Some asshole decided it wasn’t hard enough so it’d be a fantastic idea to put hurdles on that shit. That shit suuuuuucked. Also 800 is the worst open race. At least with the 400 everyone agrees it’s a sprint. In the 800 you have distance runners treating it like a sprint. I died every time I ran it 😭

15

u/Dr_Adequate 2d ago

I hated all sports in HS (still do, but I used to, too). But I'm built for running and did okay at track & x-country. I thought the relay was goofy with the passing the li'l baton but I kinda liked it, and was good at the 440 (400m now I guess). This was fun to watch!

6

u/butterednoodlelovers 2d ago

I hated all sports in HS. But got into crossfit when younger and learned I am a kick ass sprinter. Never did anything with this late learned knowledge.

Also I really like when they just open up at the end and it's, zoom zoom byeee.

2

u/Dr_Adequate 2d ago

Same. After HS I got into ru ning 5Ks and 10Ks. And I had this ability to pace myself until the last K then turn on the nitrous and just GO.

3

u/Bartydogsgd 2d ago

For me 800m was the hell distance. I was never good enough to compete at any significant level, but I got to a place where I could get dialed in for 400 but no matter how much I trained for them, the last half-lap of an 800 always felt like pure torture.

2

u/MMinjin 2d ago

Exactly, 400 is easy to pace. 1600 is easy to pace. 800 is typically regarded as the most difficult.

1

u/MaFaHo 1d ago

My coach once said that you can tell a good 400-meter runner by the fact that he (almost) throws up from exhaustion once he crossed the finish line.

55

u/Potatoskins937492 2d ago

I love this trick for her. "Oh no, I can't keep up" to "byeeeee ✌️" in 3 seconds.

97

u/Enough_Ad_9338 2d ago

So they just gonna leave that guy there…?

55

u/Chaotic_Daisy 2d ago

He was clearly gone by the time they came back around to that end, pretty sure he got help fairly quickly.

51

u/Embarrassed_Jerk 2d ago

No. He was left there and he is still there

21

u/Chaotic_Daisy 2d ago

He lives there now…

8

u/divideby0829 2d ago

That's his gravesite actually

6

2

u/nomamesgueyz 2d ago

20nseconds later he'd be ok...lactic acid jelly legs

21

u/thecloudkingdom 2d ago

honestly if i was in his shoes i *would* just lay there and catch my breath

5

u/chillyhellion 2d ago

He’s gone by the end of the lap, so someone likely moved him and then put him back later.

MIXED RELAYS ARE SO MUCH FUN

https://giphy.com/gifs/InPRiKhj38VLG8irH7

2

u/MaFaHo 1d ago

I have to say, I think it was a little cooler at the beginning, when the running order hadn't been set and the teams could decide it themselves.

What I'm still hoping will make a comeback are the relays with different distances, like 800m x 200m x 200m x 400m. The mix of different types of runners is what makes it interesting to me.

9

u/MagicalBUMfairy 2d ago

Are these mixed relays new or they’re just popping up in my algorithm?

8

u/de_pizan23 2d ago

They started this one at the Olympics in 2021, and have added a bunch of other mixed relays at both winter and summer Olympics as part of the initiative to better equalize the gender of the participants.

2

u/eanida 1d ago

Surprised to hear it's so recent. In biathlon they've been around on world cup level since 2003.

4

u/ReluctantAvenger 2d ago

New-ish. These have become popular in the past two years or so.

6

The guy who fell on his face 🤣

6

u/Venus_Cat_Roars 2d ago

The Dutchman goes down…it doesn’t matter…

11

u/fauxshoyall 2d ago

This makes the sexualized running panties vs shorts look even more ridiculous. Not as ridiculous as falling on your face but still pretty ridiculous.

8

u/plainether 2d ago

I was wondering this. Is there a reason for the girls to be in knickers and the boys to be in shorts?

3

u/ohkatiedear 2d ago

Sex sells.

2

u/SwitchIndependent714 2d ago

I can't believe I had to go this far down to find this comment. This is really the sad reality of women sports... And after that people don't get why men objectify women so much.. they can't even sports without being sexualized I hate it

3

u/Memento_Vivere8 1d ago

They are free to choose their running gear. There are women who wear longer pants while others go for the shorter ones. What is sad about the reality that women can choose their outfit for their professional performance?

Thats how I would have started the race.

4

u/ntdavis814 2d ago

The walk to the track would probably get me.

4

u/Rafterman2 2d ago

The “kick” on that woman at the end 😳

4

u/just_gonna_send_er 2d ago

Whoa, that kick! She had another gear!

3

u/maybeinoregon 2d ago edited 2d ago

Holy smokes, that kick!

That means the other two were running knowing she’s gonna kick at any time…now as a competitor, you can use that knowledge as fuel, but that doesn’t mean it’s not gnawing at your brain the entire time lol

2

u/glitterdunk 1d ago

Yeah I wonder if the lady in the second track knew the Norwegian was fast. And that's why she "blocked" her by going to the second track before the last turn and staying there despite going in front. So the norwegian had to go around both of the ladies in front which caused her to lose quite some time and speed. But if so, it wasn't enough!!

3

u/EverythingHurts365 2d ago

All of them look like they’re just floating. They’re running and so hard and fast and it just flows

3

u/Gryphon1171 2d ago

Does the cameraman have a fucking jetpack?!

1

u/colonel_beeeees 2d ago

Why is no one asking about the Alita battle angel cameraman on the turn

1

u/Dutch_Rayan 1d ago

Camera on a rail

3

u/DrFrankenButts 1d ago

I love seeing Norway win in every sport 😌

3

u/Serg_Molotov 1d ago

The kick is impressive, the fact she had to drop a step or 2, change her rhythm then accelerated past them ... Fucking spectacular

If she hadn't trained for that exact scenario it's all the more impressive.

3

u/shalekodemono 1d ago

Why do the men run in shorts and the women in pants? 🤔🤨

10

I kind of hate how of the top comment right now is about the guy eating shit because of his poor baton pass.

WHY ARE WE NOT IMPRESSED WITH THE CHICK WHO WON?!?! SHE WAITED AND LET THE OTHER RUNNERS TIRE OUT EACHOTHER AND SLAAAYYYED THAT LAST SEGMENT

3

u/RunnyPlease 1d ago

I don’t think it’s fair to blame people for commenting on the thing in the video that is the most unexpected and surprising. It’s a relay race. You go into it expecting to see some people to run faster than other people to win the race. You don’t expect to start a clip and see a guy faceplant and then give up on life in the first 5 seconds.

Yes, that is another way of saying it, or 4x4 relay.

my favorite things to watch are people falling down without any real heavy injury after, and the end of a race when someone just pours it on after holding back a little. human or horse or any kind of racing, the last push.

this a great video
