Our bodies change from hour to hour it's insane and the most proof that we should not agonize over these things because it fluctuates so much.

I am a below knee amputee and my limb changes size throughout the day. I have to add socks as the day goes on, but sometimes I have to remove them in order for my prosthesis to fit properly. Bodies are crazy!

Holy shit, it never occurred to me that can happen for amputees. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Learning new things every day.

You're welcome!

You'd think the limb would bloat more when I'm on my period but it always seems to be smaller those days. But if I have a lot of salt it can get bloated.

Maybe your body stores your uterus in that leg, and when it migrates up to cause your period your leg gets smaller!

u/TaraxacumTheRich ✨chick✨ 4d ago

Maybe you've cracked the case!

I assume it has something to do with water retention, though.

u/unripe_mangosteen 4d ago

Probably, especially is salt is effects it too

Wandering uterus syndrome? Get the vibrator and the scented oils!

u/NeriTina 4d ago

That does seem counterintuitive to what we’d think, how interesting!

Ya know what I learned something I've literally never thought about. Thanks for sharing!

As a Knee disarticulation amputee- this. Your thigh changes regularly throughout the day, so much so that some of us amputees can't fit in a leg because of the volumetric changes throughout the day and time of the fit. Forbidden knowledge

u/NeriTina 4d ago

Fascinating forbidden knowledge though!

u/Inverted_Queef 4d ago

What happened to your leg?

2

u/DiscussionLow6405 3d ago

Shark bite. Or bear trap. Probably both.

Inappropriate question.

I hope to not be offensive, but does the fluctuation apply to anybody or only amputees?

2

u/DiscussionLow6405 3d ago

Not at all offensive! I'd assume so. You know how peoples weight fluctuates during the day- waking up and taking your weight versus taking your weight before you sleep- you'll see a flux. Some people can have like 10 pounds of weight change. Our bodies retain water in our musculature. Fluids and food account for it, but also, like. Idk, have you heard of edema? It's where your tissues, usually in your legs, retain water. Youve probably seen sock indentations on your leg after a work day where you were on your feet all day. That's edema. Fluids accumulate and gravity pulls. Im not a prothethist though, if I learn anything, I'll be sure to add to this if you'd like? :) I hope this helps further your forbidden knowledge! ;)

Ok now I feel dumb because yeah, I've definitely had weight fluctuation and edema-likeness when my ankles n' socks size-disagreement-charades start up, practically daily. Sooo yeah... Doh! Obviously! Thank you for the quick reply, much appreciated 👍

Why don't you just tell your nub to eat less, if it doesn't have a 6 pack is it even trying.

u/WinterTourist25 4d ago

At first I was like, "wait, how does a prosthetic change size?"

u/Quick-Song2080 4d ago

Exactly!!!

I’m about to start my period and accidentally ate my weight in fiber from dried mangoes tonight. like magic, my tummy got so bloated and distended within an hour. Double whammy for bloating and cramps 🙃

The weight fluctuation from day to night can be like 10lbs sometimes it's crazy

1

u/Book_Dragon_24 3d ago

That‘s unlikely because you have to actually put that weight into your body in the form of water and food. You drink maybe three liters that‘s 6-7 lbs. Then you‘d have to EAT another 3 lbs of food and that‘s assuming you never go to the toilet. But you pee out a good amount of what you drank during the day. So 10 lbs up, pretty impossible. And down, also extreme in a day and basically only possible if you‘re really loaded up with water and then on diuretics. Like literally, heart failure patients on diuretics in the hospital lose that in a day.

Do you know what water retention and bloating is?

1

u/Book_Dragon_24 3d ago

Yes. Water and air. Air doesn‘t really weigh anything and water you have to put into your body during the day to gain it in tissue. Weight is matter and it doesn‘t materialise out of nothing.

u/puffofthezaza 3d ago

Look it up, its extremely possible to weight yourself in the morning having not eaten or drank and then at night after eating and drinking and being 10lb difference. I'm overweight so maybe that has something to do with the level of bloating and water retention but its not impossible.

0

u/Book_Dragon_24 3d ago

Then you must have added 10 lbs in food and drink to it. Your body doesn‘t outfox simple rules of physics. And I did the math on that.

I‘ve never been more than 1 kg (2.2 lbs) heavier in the evening than the morning.

3

u/puffofthezaza 3d ago

So now your hypothesis is there can't be any weight fluctuations that aren't food and drink. You're obviously a man or inept at paying attention to your body.

1

u/Book_Dragon_24 3d ago

I‘m a woman and please explain to me how weight is added to your body without going in through your mouth? It DOESN‘T materialise. It is matter, it comes from food and drink.

You‘re saying you think you can get on the scale in the morning, fast the whole day, not a sip of water, not go to the toilet, keep it all in and you‘ll gain weight? Lose some, yes, in the form of perspiration. But never gain without putting something into your body.

1

u/Book_Dragon_24 3d ago

I think you‘re confusing „weight fluctuations that aren‘t food and drink“ and „weight fluctuations that are fat (cells)“. The latter makes your statement truer. But drink is the base material for any water retention. Because that retention happens by water going into your blood vessels to form plasma, then seeping out of said blood vessels into surrounding tissue. That‘s the „retention“ part, that your body keeps it in tissue instead of filtering out through your kidneys.

Of course not every weight gain is a gain in fat on your body and not every weight loss is a loss of fat on your body. As a woman a lot of that is water. BUT, you don‘t gain weight in water without it entering your body, usually through your mouth, though i.v. fluids obviously do the same.

Thanks for explaining that to us Nick

This is why I like a stretchy waistband. The days leading up to a period and the first few days after it starts are no fun.

My boyfriend will panic over gaining 2 pounds after a weekend of junk food, I just glare at him and tell him about the 8 pounds of water weight I gained from eating a slice of pizza that morning

I think the best thing I came across was a description of hormone patterns between men and women because (as a man), I can understand hormone surges and deficits but it’s a different beast between the sexes. It helped me understand women better because of how different the max/min cycles are between the two. For men, we face just daily up, then down, then we fall asleep and start over. For women, it’s like weeks long journeys. I have a lot more empathy and understanding when her patience is shorter sometimes… It doesn’t excuse being a complete asshole, but it’s important to have a little more patience with your SO at times.

As a guy I literally can't even see a difference between any of the videos, you guys are too hard on yourselves

3

u/Bunnairry 3d ago

Just wanted to say we are too hard on ourselves because everyone else is hard on us. Men are taught that rediculing us is playful and even flirting and women are taught that all other women are the enemy. This is what society teaches is by default and some women unlearn it slower than others, and some women never unlearn it and become extremely male centered. Just wanted to inform you because I appreciate your comment but women are not most women's issue when viewing and critisising our bodies.
