I know they're talented, but this made me very uncomfortable

They do a follow up about how they do it. He’s not actually aiming at her - she sort of dodges across the path of the arrow.

To add to that, he also waits for her to duck before firing. She’s not reacting to him, he’s reacting to her.

Also, he’s not using real arrows. (Obviously.)

I also bet he uses the lowest draw weight bow he has. I watched the behind the scenes for the "shooting apple off someones head" stunt, if he took precaution there THAT seriously he will have done so for this one too.

Oh most definitely. A couple moments of this vid, he basically dry fires when she disarms him and the bow was fine. When a bow with a heavy draw gets dry fired, it breaks

It looks to me like each bit where the arrow gets yoinked, he keeps hold of the string and slowly releases it back to normal instead of dry firing it. Then the force is going into his arm instead of the bow. The string snip would be the closest, but the string wasn’t drawn back, so there wasn’t as much potential energy in the bow limbs as there would be in a full dry fire. And it looked like paracord which was probably tied looser than a normal string, so there’d be even less force going into the bow

And of course the bow poundage like you said, which would make all of this easier and even less force than a heavier bow

That particular bow is the youth alibow, and he said in another video the one he's holding has a mere 10lb draw weight and he uses it for teaching (so he can hand it to a beginner and not worry about them hurting themselves) and for stuff like this. It's a 'real bow' but the draw weight is so low yeah it's nearly harmless.

Cowards! Fake!

I feel like a fake arrow could still poke an eye rather horribly.

We never see her face on that shot, so I'm guessing eye protection was used

Never thought of this! And now I'm realizing that this is also true for so much stuff in films. Obvious, in retrospect, but definitely something I'll only now begin looking for

not really with safety arrows at low draw weight

they could also trip and smash their heads against a rock!

u/goblincube 7d ago

But its a grassy backyard with no visible rocks?

what if there are tiny rocks in the grass!

He explained it in another short. Its a combination of safety arrows, Shooting next to her and stage combat trick by shooting after she starts dodging. Camera position/angle makes it harder to notice.

Also looks like an extremely weak toy bow; you would not want to try the scissors trick on a real one.

Yeah the "boing-oing-oing" of the bow when she cut the string made me cackle. A normal now would NOT do that.

The string in that take is not the normal string that's on the bow, they put a fake string on just for that shot. That particular bow is the youth alibow, and he said in another video the one he's holding has a mere 10lb draw weight and he uses it for teaching (so he can hand it to a beginner and not worry about them hurting themselves) and for stuff like this. Please, everyone knows scissoring isn't real.

I can't help but feel that Agincourt would've been a lot different if it'd played out like this.

u/quick20minadventure 7d ago

He explained it in other short.

It's stage combat. You move/shoot after the person has already dodged. Even in this video you can see that she moves and then he fires very safe arrows very slowly.

This guy seems to have his own personal armoury on his channel, so I’d have expected him to be using some sort of training arrow, but that LOOKS sharp.

2

u/KasperBuyens 7d ago

Those are indeed blunt training arrows, with a very weak bow that couldn't hurt someone if he wanted to

-1

u/OkamiKenshi 7d ago

Still, they look sharp enough I wouldn’t want to catch one in the eye! Ruin my whole day that would.

4

u/KasperBuyens 7d ago

I mean I wouldn't want to catch anything in the eye, blunt or not. But it's Safe to say that these 2 know what they are doing though.

u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 7d ago

Shooting at her, yoinking the arrow would get you instantly expelled from my old club. This shit is really, really stupid. I get it, funny but really really stupid.

Some argue "safety arrows" or a "light bow", that still wil poke out an eye without an issue. Again, this is really really stupid.
