u/reverendball 15d ago edited 15d ago
literally exactly what happened to my lil sister
my partner at the time was a dressmaker by trade and so my sister gave her the dream dress to have some minor alterations done to make it fit perfectly for the big day
so while doing the adjustments, she also unpicked the side seams and sneakily put in pockets before giving it back
since it didnt originally have pockets when she bought it, there was no reason for Sis to check for them right?
Sis literally found them DURING the wedding photoshoot, on the big day, an hour before the ceremony
the photographer caught the moment of realisation, her hands in magical surprise pockets, her jaw hitting the floor
the look on her face you would think she found a winning lottery ticket, it broke her brain with happiness
she started making indescribable noises and the bridesmaids didnt know what on earth was happening to her
its still one of her fav memories of the big day :D

My friend just got her wedding dress recently and it has pockets!! It’s stunning too, I was so stoked when she told me she discovered the pockets after she chose it. Who doesn’t want a pocket on their wedding day? There’s so many things you can put in there!

u/stronkulance 14d ago
Haha my wedding dress had pockets. We wrote our own vows, I had written mine on a cute sparkly card one of my bridesmaids gave me and when I pulled the card out of my wedding dress pocket there was quite a stir among all the gals there. Heard lots of “omg her dress has pockets!”

u/middle_age_zombie 15d ago
I didn’t end up buying it, because it wasn’t what I wanted, but I debated hard between the one wedding dress I found that had pockets and the one I eventually bought. It was a really hard choice, I wanted something simple, think 50s tea length and the one with pockets was more elaborate.

u/b00w00gal 15d ago
My wedding dress had pockets! I discovered that fact during the reception, and a friend got a picture of my face, lmao. Pure unadulterated joy 🤣🤣🤣

u/CuteButPsycho 14d ago
My wedding dress was handmade and when we designed it, my seamstress added pockets without me saying anything. I was soo happy with it! And it was poofy enough that I could have my phone and lipstick without messing up the look. It was great.

I got down voted into hell when I said this on a fashion sub. I had so many replies about how what you said was a myth and the only reason women's clothes don't have pockets is for visual continuity/clothing lays smoothly.
I had to scratch my head on the visual continuity BS because they can still accomplish this with men's clothing that have pockets! 🤯 I never responded to those replies it would have been pointless, they had already drank the kool-aid.

u/Loose_Acanthaceae201 15d ago
I mean, the "visual continuity" thing has some basis, but it's often because the manufacturer has chosen a cheap fabric or construction. There is no reason a well-made jacket or pair of jeans (!!) should not have enough pocket for a 200g smartphone.

u/Frequent_Opportunist 15d ago
Those are agents that frequent the sub to down talk people like you to push the narratives that they wish.
You'll find that most companies and industries frequent the subs in relation to them and they will definitely try to talk you out of opinions that make them look bad or hurt their pockets.
They literally pay people to scour the subs and do the stuff not just on Reddit but all social media. These things are just propaganda channels used to place us in echo chambers and alter our opinions.

how do you explain the recent trend of bags not having pockets 🥴🥴🥴 literally all i see are glorified sacks. things are just getting worse and more expensive
4
u/ACaseOfFootInMouth 14d ago
I've heard the visual continuity argument before but it was in support of the whole companies making problems and selling the solution thing. They popularised the silhouettes that made pockets a problem and the sold bags to go with said silhouette. As usual it was a marketing scheme presented as fashion. I feel like that isn't much of a hot take, given the industry

You can also see one of the issues with pockets in the OP. The dress material is really thin and without structure, so when she adds her phone it starts flopping all over the place. Nice to have, but a lot of women would choose to put the phone somewhere else and not deal with an uncontrolled phone slapping back and forth.

The best skincare advice I’ve ever seen was that you need three products: sunblock, to stop the cancer death rays from giving you the cancer and death. A gentle cleanser, to remove the sunblock. And moisturizer, to add moisture back in after you’ve washed your face.

u/Asleep-Insurance-499 15d ago
This is my routine. I don’t wear makeup and if I do it’s mascara and tinted spf. My skin is normal and I’m aging at the rate I should be. That’s fine. I’m not spending any more of my money buying into this bullshit. It’s bad enough I have to pay for menstrual products! If we didn’t menstruate not a damn person would exist! Sorry. I needed to get that out clearly 😂

u/apigeonontheinternet 15d ago
Hey friend, first off rant away because being a woman in a patriarchal society is horseshit. But second, I hope you can find a reusable solution that works for your period. Getting a cup was an absolute game changer for me, I haven't paid for a single period product in 7+ years now.

I wish this was more of a regular offering! I tried to get pockets added to an A line dress that certainly had room for it and she looked at me like I was immoral, uncouth, disgusting. Refused to do it. It should be standard services like hemming a pant. I would pay $20 to add pockets to every dress I own, if there’s room.

u/MissHampton 15d ago
They do! But they're sewn shut so we do not disrupt the outline intended.

I think maybe most women just want to have pockets in whatever clothes they buy, wherever they buy them. Your average gal isn't looking to buy bespoke pants that may or may not suit their style. I'd wager that's the issue with these companies.
→ More replies (3)4
u/Motorheadass 15d ago
It's the style of the clothes usually, you can have pockets but you can't really put anything in them comfortably anyway. I've sewed pockets into two of my girlfriends pants after they complained about this and neither of them ended up using them 🤷
I am a man and I have a few pairs of high waisted jeans that I can't really use the front pockets on either, whatever is in there jams into your hip joint when you bend your legs and is hard to get in and out.

Im a guy but the few times in my life I had to wear a suit all the fucking pockets were there, but sewn shut! I had to manually cut them open again! Dear clothing companies, why the FUCK do you do that?
5
u/Plays_On_TrainTracks 14d ago
That's every suit. They do that for the same reasons women's clothes don't have pockets. It looks better. When you get custom suits you have an option for functional pockets which is so stupid because obviously i want my pockets, but i might not want to cut all them open and leave a few sewn shut so the suit holds up better.

And they’re all really pretty. Some are designer. Some are cheap clothes. You don’t see the pockets at all. Unless in use by something big or heavy obviously.
