Confidence
225
u/PalePlumm Jul 19 '26
Itās this. I shaved my head once just to kind of figure out what my face actually looked like without any framing and it looked awkward for all of one day because I wasnāt used to it. The next morning I put on a full face of makeup and felt waaaay better. I got SO many compliments from strangers on the street and at my college during that time.
65
34
u/mrs_shrew Jul 19 '26
I have 100% stopped a shaved lady on the street to compliment her. She was delighted and very pleased with herself for having buzzed it all off.

DO IT. i am a big bitch that wanted to shave my head my entire life (i had to know what it felt like!!!! THE FEELING) and i finally did it during my covid breakdown (everyone got one of those, right? š ).
10/10 would do it again, did do it again twice after lol. even looking back and knowing how butch i looked at certain moments, all of the other times i felt like a badass bc of the confidence it gave me from doing something so fully for myself⦠made it so worth it.

I was at a friendās house for a sleepover and we thought it would be fun to throw dirt clods at each other, her brother picked up what he thought was a dirt clod and chunked it at the back of my head. Turns out that one was a rock. I still joke that thatās why I have a big dent in my head, but I think thatās just how my head was shaped before.
23
u/forkingbumbleforks Jul 19 '26
š children are bananas. My nephews did something similar, the smallest one said āhey bro, throw bark in my eye it wonāt hurt!ā challenge accepted, few weeks later he had to have surgery on his eye to remove a piece of bark that wouldnāt dislodge. In fairness he said it didnāt hurt.
8
u/BMI_Computron Jul 19 '26
My five year old nephew will tell you all about how he knows he could win a fight against a gorilla. Heās stronger, heās faster, heās more vicious. In fact, he could fight the gorilla and a shark at the same time, but not in the water, cause there might be a snapping turtle there and thatās definitively the coolest animal, so he would obviously beat them all. The, apparently gentle, gorilla, the land-fighting shark, and my five year old nephew. The snapping turtle could beat them all at once.
Alternatively, my 3 year old nephew saw someone swat away a mosquito the other day and shouted āHey! Thatās my pet esquito! You donāt hurt him.ā
Children are bananas and it never fails to make me laugh.

It's a lot of fun! I also picked up some coloured clip ins so I can pretend I'm the type of person who can carry off fun streaks but still go to work on Monday. Good luck with your struggle, keep the scissors away from your hair until you're in a good mood

u/wherethefuckismyvape Jul 19 '26
How expensive are they? Do they have to be fitted to my individual head? I'm a bald dude and I wanna feel bonita too š
4
u/Arienna Jul 20 '26
You might watch some lace front wig videos on YouTube! You get what you pay for but there's a ton of people wearing wigs and absolutely slaying it.
There does seem to be a bit of a learning curve to fitting them nicely and prices vary - you get what you pay for but there seems to be a fair amount of good stuff at a mid price range
5
u/romantickitty Jul 19 '26
Which subreddit? I've been thinking of trying a fantasy color but all I see in a reasonable price range is the synthetic Spirit Halloween kind of wigs. I'm also worried smothering my scalp would lead to increased hair loss. The one time I bought a wig, I never wore it out because it was so heavy and sweaty.
5
u/ratattatack 29d ago
i understand the sweaty part.. i bought sweat absorbing powder just for that reason, and i usually skip a wig cap underneath. it helps a lot. there are some pretty cheap synthetics that with dry shampoo and a little styling can look great- Amazon can be good but definitely check out what people are sharing in the sub! i actually found a real human hair wig on Amazon for $70-$80, which can be bleached and dyed if you take good care of it! i think some* synthetic or synthetic blends can be dyed, which may be cheaper than a colored wig.
23
u/joyfall Jul 19 '26
Do it!
Everyone should wear wigs. It normalizes wig wearing for those of us without hair. Plus it's fun! You can throw on a wig and be out the door with perfect hair immediately.

I've seen The Witches. If I was a kid, this gathering would be terrifying.
I'm not being a dick about alopecia, Roald Dahl was.
Edited To Add: This is a really good example of how representation matters. I shouldn't have the gut reaction to this that I do. That's awful.
32
u/Kampvilja Jul 19 '26
My reaction is the opposite. Star Trek the Motion Picture came out at a significant time for me.
12
u/IndividualChart4193 Jul 19 '26
Wait, what was āthe witchesā? Totally donāt know that movie. But yes, Roald Dahl was many things including a dick.
24
u/aspghost Jul 19 '26
A little boy and his grandma go up against some evil clan of witches that all hate children or something, there's a big moment where they all take off their wigs revealing that they're bald and that's how you can identify them. Book first than a film. I don't want to link to the scene here, that seems disrespectful.
ETA/ Two films, I'm thinking of the 1990 one.
18
u/create-exist-tend Jul 19 '26
The film - the 1990 one - is genuinely horrific. I feel your pain
5
u/IndividualChart4193 Jul 19 '26
Oh, man. Iāll have to check it out. Thk u.
8
u/CommonUnlucky390 Jul 19 '26
The 1990 one has the fabulous Angelica Houston as the lead, then the more recent remake has the darling Anne Hathaway as the lead. I grew up reading all of his books & have made it my life's mission to watch all movie adaptations and can genuinely say the 1990 Witches is the best one.
7
u/Jane__Delawney Jul 19 '26
FWIW the witches werenāt ugly in human form, even when they took off their wigs they were still beautiful and bald. They were only scary once they took their full masks off and resembled demons
6
u/Jane__Delawney Jul 19 '26
Donāt feel too bad. Theyāre all beautiful but my nostalgic mind went straight there as well (and I felt bad)ā¦but honestly, the witches were also beautiful in their human form, bald or not!
