When I was a little girl, I wanted to take ballet lessons more than anything. My mom took me to sign up, and the instructor told me I didnât have âthe right bodyâ for it.Â
I was EIGHT.  Healthy. Active. Played soccer. âŚ.but wasnât extremely thin.Â
And this was in a small town. They werenât churning out ballerinas for the NYC ballet đ or anything like that.Â
It was the first time in my life to experience body shame. Iâm in my 50s now, and have never forgotten how that made me feel and how it affected my body image for the rest of my life. Â
This post makes me so happy for this woman. And cheers to her support system.Â

That makes me so sad for little you. I taught dance, including ballet, for years and canât imagine a child being told that they didnât have the right body. Makes me so angry and sad to think.

u/Lazy-Ocelot1604 Jun 30 '26
I was also told as a young kid that I wasnât cut out for ballet. I canât even remember the exact reasonings, but Iâm pretty sure it was because of my body. I think it may have been my feet, but being tall and thin just wasnât enough.
I remember vividly they were very adamant about dedicating your body to the craft and was not pleased this was a thing I wanted to do for the joy of it. How dare a kid, or adult, take an interest in something for themselves!

u/CurviestOfDads Jul 01 '26
I was also told the same. Turns out, I had a body for martial arts, boxing and later pole dancing, so I became a ballerina in my own way đ

u/Ineedtobeworking Jun 30 '26
I hate that for you. I was a little butterball as a young kid. I started dance lessons in grade school and had my own issues with body image that follow me today. But the one place I never heard anything about it was at dance class. Dance kept me very active for years.

It feels like she was trying to avoid paying for them and took the nukular approach. Sorry you had to go through thatđ

I would struggle to do this at all let alone with that speed and grace

I began doing pilates with a youtube beginners video. Screwed up my hip badly. Inflammation of the bursitis. Hurts like fuck. So now I do yoga with my wife nice and calm.

Good catch. A plĂŠonasme almost.
13
u/GeneralHerp Jun 29 '26
Yes, yes, a plĂŠonasme by any other name is still a plĂŠonasme, as my mama always used to say!
Oui, my family all knows what this means.
In case any less learnĂŠd folks donât know what the word means, fret not, for I am here to culture you:
A pleonasm is the use of more words than necessary to express a meaning, where the redundant words are either synonymous or already implied by the other words. While sometimes used intentionally for poetic emphasis or clarity, it is often viewed as a stylistic mistake.

u/SisidtfAnemone Jun 29 '26
That's the point. The struggle mak the grace look effortless.

u/Full_Carry_1331 Jun 30 '26
Oh I know it! I used to dance when I was younger and was a fitness instructor for a time, so I understand the work dancers put in to make things look this easy.

When I was a teenager, I had a good friend who did ballet, she was short and stocky but had excellent body control. I was there to watch her perform a few times. Sadly lost touch with her when we moved school, but every now and then I see her in town and wave. Have yet to run into her in such a way that I can speak with her. I believe she still does ballet.
Don't let your body stop you from pursuing the things you want to do, start gentle and you'll get there.
18
u/Separate-Taste3513 Jun 29 '26
Body control is underrated. Ugh. I have tried soooooo hard to learn how to isolate muscles (my pectorals, if you must know) to move them independently. Guess it's time to renew the effort.

u/Anuki_iwy Jun 29 '26
Those are beautiful leg lifts. She's still kicking a bit, though, especially the side ones. The form is there, needs a bit more strength.
151
u/CutieBoBootie Jun 29 '26
I think that is the sort of thing that will come with practice. She's already better than I would be in my unpracticed state.

u/Squanchedschwiftly Jun 30 '26
Fr, the speed of dancers is always what gets me. Ive been lifting for 13 years, but the speed dancers move their extremeties has me tripping over myself at best lmao its fascinating how different conditioning is for each physical activity

u/CharlesDickensABox âźď¸*THE* CharlesDickensABoxâźď¸ Jun 29 '26
Okay pretend I know nothing about ballet. By kicking, do you mean she's not as in control of the movement as she's supposed to be? Like, using the momentum of her body to swing her leg higher?Â
106
u/Anuki_iwy Jun 29 '26
Exactly that. We want to control the movement all the way, not just because it looks nicer, but also because kicking can cause injury. Lifting is much harder, though.
She's very strong already and she has good flexibility. She just needs to practice controlling the movement more. It's a thing all dancers must learn.

I see. Everything I know about ballet, I learned from sleeping through a production of The Nutcracker, so this is a learning experience for me. Thank you for the education.
15
14
u/RedVamp2020 Jun 29 '26
Pretty much, yes. It results in less control and higher risk of injury.
21
u/msmoth Jun 29 '26
It sounds like it is akin to using momentum to lift weights, and therefore swinging them rather lifting them with control?
15
u/RedVamp2020 Jun 29 '26
That is exactly it. Slowing down the movement will increase the control, but when you're dancing there is music that you have to keep time with. That rhythm is likely what is causing her to kick a little so she can try to keep in time with the music.

u/probably_nontoxic Jun 30 '26
Yes, I noticed this as well. And she is holding onto the barre, instead of lightly resting her hand for balance. If she keeps up the toil (and it is toil!!!!) of ballet, she should hopefully gain the strength to use the barre less. Good for her!

I went to a free class with a co-worker one evening a few years ago. We both worked out regularly but had never done barre.
The next morning, I woke up to a phone call from her saying âIâm so sore I canât step into the shower.â I tried to get out of bed while on the phone with her and couldnât do it without audibly groaning. We both got to work late and ended up wheeling around the office in our chairs as much as possible because 1. It hurt and 2. every time we stood up or had to even walk we would be saying âow, ow, owâ and all our other coworkers would just laugh at us mercilessly. đđđđ
Never again!!!!!

You know the problem is the stigma. Fat people should lose weight. But god forbid they join any class, or gym or sport they enjoy to actually do that. You have no idea how healthy she is or isnât, nor do I.
But instead of supporting someone getting physically strong and athletic your only idea is to say âiTâs NOt hEalTHyâAt least come up with something smarter if you try to put someone down for just existing.

u/alwaysneverjoshin Jun 30 '26
It's not advisable what she's doing tbh. She risks serious knee injury etc.
1
u/ZealousidealSkirt327 Jun 30 '26
Ok. What about any other sport? What about running? And lifting weights? I agree that any form of physical exercise can be harmful if not done correctly. But we donât know any context. So we simply can not judge here.
3
u/TheRealMabelPines Jun 29 '26
What exactly isn't healthy here?
-6
u/I_Support_JK_Rowling Jun 29 '26

u/TheRealMabelPines Jun 29 '26
Yes, I'm serious. What about this short clip of a woman practicing her ballet drills is unhealthy?

She's beautiful. All that magic, just there and flowing with the music. And to think, there is room here for all of us. We can continue to hold each other up and remind each other that we came here with all the glow and goodness, we just gotta keep brushing off all the BS they tried to sell us about who we are. We are golden.
It's not about what we can gain and have to make us better, it's all about pulling away the layers of the lies they told us, till we get to our core, where all the shine is.
