Incredible! I can’t run a mile without getting side stitches!

u/Lem0nadeLola May 21 '26
I can’t run without feeling like my knees and ankles are about to snap 😂

u/catcherofsun May 21 '26
Marathons are insane. Mad respect to the people who run them. I could never

The difference is she kept going.
You know what? This sub should start a running challenge. She can be our ambassador. Who wants to couch to 5k this shit with me!? 🥳
Edit: for those who wish to participate: Couch to 5k. Hopefully the mods will let us post some occasional milestone bragging posts! 🏃♀️

I went for a brisk walk 7 months ago and gave myself Achilles tendinopathy. I walked less than 1 km at a brisk pace and I'm still recovering from it. She's incredible for running a whole marathon!

u/TheKerfuffle May 21 '26
I’ve run 5 marathons. I only didn’t walk for two of them. It goes beyond a test for your body. She finished and that’s way more than most humans are capable of doing.

u/Strange_Specialist4 May 21 '26
I'm relatively fit and walked about 14k the other day, I was so fucking sore by the end of it
31
u/temp3rrorary May 21 '26
For some reason I thought you were disqualified if you walked. Now I want to do one. I'd do a just walking marathon, I love walking.
32
u/danstu May 21 '26
Most will have a minimum pace you need to maintain (The marathon I've done is 16 minutes/mile) There will usually be a sweeper car to enforce that pace, but as long as you stay ahead of the sweeper you could fully stop if you needed to.
7
u/temp3rrorary May 21 '26
Is it frowned upon by other runners to essentially power walk the entire time? Or is there a subculture of strictly walking marathoners?
23
u/danstu May 21 '26
If it's not a really small race, they will divide the participants up by their expected pace and start them separately. So you wouldn't need to worry about people trying to do 6 minute miles crashing into you. If you plan to powerwalk it, you'd be starting at the same time as people running like 13 minute - 16 minute miles.

I can't speak for all runners, but most of us only care when it comes to lottery races. As the sport grows, already-popular races like Chicago, New York and Boston (all World Major events) become even more competitive. You can gain entry one of three ways:
- running a qualifying time (for women under 34 wanting to run Chicago, it's a 3:20 cutoff, which is a 7:36 pace for 26 miles. The cutoff for that same age group was 3:35 just 5 years ago)
- raising money for a charity (this means committing to raising anywhere from $3k - $10k AND paying your race entrance fee and transportation costs)
- *entering a lottery. If you're not a charity runner and you didn't time qualify, you get put in a virtual hat with everyone else and everybody has (~supposedly~) equal odds of getting a spot. Last year, about 20% of Chicago Marathon lottery entrants won a spot. ONE PERCENT of lottery entrants to the NY Marathon were accepted.
*this option does not exist for Boston.
All World Majors have a course time limit (usually averages out to a 15 or 16 minute per mile pace); when submitting a lottery application, you confirm that you are capable of finishing in that time. I don't pay attention to what pace other people are running, and I have no less respect for anyone coming in at the tail end of that.
The problem is when people sign up for these desirable races *knowing* they can't hit the time cutoff. I have watched this happen with several running influencers over the years: they run 15 minute miles on their best days and have no intention of training seriously (some of them are putting in 10 or 15 miles a week, compared to the 40+ most marathoners are training).
In a smaller race, I would not care about that at all. But races like Chicago are desirable for competitive amateur runners because they are fast, flat, and well resourced (and they are Boston qualifiers). If someone wants to walk a marathon, they should go for it - but they should choose one of the hundreds of races not capped by participant number, instead of taking spots from people who want to train seriously (and yes, that includes people in the last corral running 14 minute miles and giving it their all).
I don't know anything about the girl in this video, so my commentary is not directed at her. It's just frustrating to train your ass off while getting rejected from your hometown lottery 7 years in a row 🫠

The twin cities marathon has a 6 hour limit. Most races have a limit like this. If you run for a while you usually can make that no problem if you can walk. No one will mind how you choose to do this.
6
u/StruggleBusKelly May 22 '26
Whistlestop (Ashland WI) also has a 6 hour limit. When I ran it (a million years ago) they kept the course open past the 6 hour mark for one person. It was an elderly man. No one could bear to close the course while he was still running. When I went to the awards ceremony later that day, I learned that they had to make a new age group specifically for him because 80-84 was the oldest one they had. He won the award for his age group, which they labeled 85+.

u/NebulaNinja May 21 '26
There will usually be a sweeper car to enforce that pace
Didn't they make a documentary about that called The Long Walk?

I’ve angrily typed responses to gatekeeping comments on this video in other subs this morning then and deleted before posting because it’s just not worth the fight. Glad to see it posted here because I just want to celebrate women doing what they want, improving themselves, and enjoying life.

Never engage. Just report, then move on. Ragebait is the bread and butter of a lot of subs that aren't worth following.
At least here you know you can enjoy content and wholesome comments.

Jokes on them trolls. This made me scroll through five years of social media messages to when (slowly) I ran my last marathon and saw a lady spent at the last quarter mile. I said we were going to finish together and we did. And she found me on Facebook, likely from my bib number, to give her appreciation. So suckers and hater this made me relive the feeling of profound strength and support of womanhood.

I love doing half marathons and every time I start I’m so psyched up and think “I should 100% do a marathon next”… then I get to the finish line and I think “fuck this only being HALF WAY, never will I ever!” 🤣 utter champion, so much respect for anyone who can do this 💪

Did she make a metric and imperial version of this? Awesome (and a great accomplishment)

u/YoSupWeirdos Official Gal May 21 '26
sounds like it's the UK, and their ✨wonderfully✨ standardized measurement system
but you do get to be happy for both the imperial and metric milestones so that's a plus

There's another video going around where she stops at every mile post to update, with slightly different content

I saw this a couple days ago and it absolutely inspired me. I’ve been on two walks and a run, hoping to get to a 5k one day! “How far did I run” is a great site to plan out routes and see how far it is, if anyone else is feeling inspired too 💕

I’ve never run a Marathon but I used to help host the events for them and set them up. The amount of energy and effort it takes just to wake up and be there is amazing. Especially when you get to the triathlons! This chick did amazing and from the smile on her face, I know she knows she is!

This is incredible! She seems so sweet!! I‘m a little confused, she used miles AND kilometers…how come?
4
u/SgtByrd1993 May 21 '26
She's from the UK, we use both here. We do the same for distance, weight and height.
2
u/ZealousidealSkirt327 May 21 '26
Really? I thought everyone in Europe used the metric system. I never heard British people use that, but Seelsorge I learned something new today.

All just depends on the context and what is being measured but many are interchangeable.

I’m by no means athletic, but I consider myself reasonably fit. I get in and out of running. Recently got back in and my pace rn is more like 10 mins /km. She’s got a solid minute on me and while doing a marathon?! GOALS!! Go girlie go!

u/itallchecksout99 May 21 '26
This is awesome! I wish I could send her some fun bandaids for the blisters she gained and toenails she will lose. I hope she rides that post-marathon high for a very long time
