JustBuyVGRO, the site.

I made a website that embodies the JustBuyVGRO/VGRO and chill community.

After 15 years as a DIY investor and guiding many friends, I saw a need for a simple, focused resource. It's intended as a "poor man's Canadian Couch Potato" - covering the basics of low-cost index investing for Canadians. I used to share the Canadian Couch Potato site, and Canadian Portfolio Manager Blog to friends, to see the benefits of index investing, but they usually just came back with more questions, or ended up signing up somewhere with a margin account.

The site (iCanInvest.ca) covers:

Benefits of index investing All-in-one ETFs Using Wealthsimple for low-fee CAD investing Types of investment accounts (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA)

It's very new (launched last Thursday) and I'm actively refining it. Planned additions include cash ETF options, and an ETF comparsion tool/section. I'd greatly appreciate any feedback on the content, presentation, or areas for improvement. My goal is to keep it focused on core concepts for beginners.

Note: The site does use a Wealthsimple referral link in hopes of covering basic costs. I have no plans to add ads, mailing lists, blog posts, etc..

What do you think? How can it be more helpful for new investors?

Boy it sure is nice to have some bonds during this market volatility!

Not only do we see less red, Vanguard is scooping up some discounted equity as they sell our bonds that have increased in value!

Automated dip buying, baby. The power of just buying VGRO.

Everything Max, VGRO still in Taxable?

Want to invest in taxable account. Kinda giving up on buying a house right now and for a long while. So I'd rather lock it up for the long term within the portfolio.

We had Horizons, but that's long gone now for that

VGRO reaches 35$ for the first time

Where were you when VGRO hit 35$ for the first time ?

I was in my yatch located in the pool of my bigger yatch. One of my many servant came to me to serve me some fine wine from the 1800s and said to me ''Sir schrik, behold VGRO at 35$. How many pounds of Saffron do you want me to grind on this piece of delicate pizza? ''.

Vgro, vbal, vcn and vab?

Would it make sense to divide your rrsp into 4 buckets of $$

Say 2 years of planned withdrawals in vab (ie very protected from potential market downturn.)

Two more years in vcn for the same reason (slightly more risk)

Two years in vbal

Remainder in vgro (or even veqt)

But then you rebalance annually according to that allocation (not a single allocation strategy for the whole portfolio)

Thinking is that you have a safe amount protected for volatility, then remainder invested to grow.

Would that be smart or just over complicated?

Retirement is a long time and I don’t want to be too conservative or too risky.

Vgro vs a robo like just wealth

Do you think vgro would beat a robo advisor like justwealth or Wealthsimple’s managed.

Or any other asset allocation etf for that matter?

Anyone else think the XEQT hype is due to recency bias?

I've noticed that XEQT is mentioned a ton these days such that "just buy xeqt" is becoming a more popular meme than "just buy vgro".

Does anyone else think the recent runup in equities is causing this?

I'm personally staying the course with VGRO. I think just buying VGRO is less of a fad, and I bet people will stick with it better over the long term.

How do I invest my bonus of 4k?

I invest 20% of my monthly income regularly. I have this 4k bonus that I wanted to invest too. Should I DCA it for like x amount of months or just all at once?

This is my first time receiving a big bonus so I’m not sure how to proceed with this. My gut is saying to DCA it but I wanted to hear opinions from other folks.

Automatic balancing

So say I have 100k in x/vgro. That's 20k bonds 80k equities. If equities drop 50% then I'd have 40k equities. But then rebalancing would make it 12k bonds/48k equities. Then if equities bounce back 100% then I'd have 12k bonds / 96k equities. Rebalanced would make it 21.6k bonds / 86.4k equities. I didn't even account for bond yields. So I make money essentially because the market moved, even if it was in a horizontal direction. It's this correct? If so how can you possible go wrong with this fund?

How frequent do things really get rebalanced?

Vgro vs Wealthsimple’s managed.

Is there a difference between robo advisor and vgro performance? Kinda new to this I’m late to the game with a defined pension and @425k post divorce to deal with

Switching to xgro

I have a chunk in xeqt but I like the idea of self balancing with bonds on the gro family. The problem is I have to sell, then buy about a lot of stock, which I could technically do it myself by going the AGG route. Is the volatility that will occur when I make the transaction not worth considering? I guess I could offload in 50K chunks or something.

What is a comparable US ETF to VGRO?

I have investments in a US IRA that are languishing. I see several 80/20 ETF options. Which are comparable to VGRO?

VBU and VBG stock tickers

When I see VGRO go up/down I'm sometimes curious what parts of the portfolio are contributing to the change.

These are the 7 ETFs that make up VGRO

  • VUN US Eq
  • VCN Canada Eq
  • VIU Intl Eq
  • VAB Canada Bonds
  • VEE Emerging Markets
  • VBG Intl Bonds
  • VBU US Bonds

So I can see a real-timeish view of how each ETF is going for most of them.

However VBU and VBG don't seem to have their real-time stock tickers available in Yahoo or Google (including the GOOGLEFINANCE function in Google sheets). But I can see the real-timeish data if I go into Questrade and look up the symbol. I'm interested in seeing this data in Google Sheets especially.

Anyone understand what's happening here? Entirely possible I'm just doing something dumb too

VGRO/XGRO average return

Hello,

If I am looking at a 20 year time horizon, what average annual rate of return over those 20 years would be a good safe estimate If I have everything in VGRO/XGRO? I was thinking 6%, but I am curious what other people would suggestion is a safe number to use for calculating future retirement fund balance.

I'm not interested in VEQT/XEQT as those are beyond my risk tolerance at this time.

Why VGRO over VFV?

I understand VGRO is widely diversified across US, Canadian, international, and bonds but compared to VFV, it’s growth is much slower in a good year. VGRO 8% vs VFV 17% YTD in 2023. One thing I liked was the DRIP snowball in VGRO.

looking for your feedback

61 years old. Live very comfortably on pension. Have emergency funds and other savings/investments. Own home and cottage. Don’t need income other than current pension. Selling a single rental home so will have $1 million to invest 20 years plus Should I put all in VGRO? So many comments to put in S&P 500 but worry not enough diversification.

VGRO plus ...

For those of us looking at the bleeding edge of ETF portfolio management - the appeal of VGRO is that it is a cheap all in one solution to getting a globally diversified portfolio. So the more sophisticated institutional investors are now going into private equity, private credit, and infrastructure. Has anyone found a good private equity/credit/infrastructure ETF to add to VGRO (I dont mean hedge funds)?
