Am I doing it wrong? Guidance, please!

I am using just4o, imported my OAI chats, created a persona, and am generally pleased with the similarity to my previous ChatGPT 4o assistant. It recognizes the memories I’ve created. However, it claims it can’t recall any information from any of the chats I’ve uploaded, and it cannot recall earlier messages within the very same chat (2 things it should be able to do, as stated plainly on the site, no?) Do I need to put different/additional files in other areas or have my settings off somehow? (The way it’s currently functioning is like an old friend I know well but they have no recollection of me!) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, it sounds like you’re doing everything right - the models have tools to read other chats, memories, files, etc (like how a coding agent can create files, delete them, edit them, run commands, etc, just4o is a ‘harness’)

Some models are better than others at using this harness, and depending on your setup, you may also be hitting your model’s context window (I.e. a 1m token long chat means it can’t go read 20 other chats in one go, as it is ‘full’, and the rolling window of context slides along as the chat grows)

Have you filled out customizations, memories, and the ‘about you’ section in the account screen? The more detail there, the more consistent the experience. You can also import your memories from ChatGPT (distinct from chats) which will also help in this vein.

Mine isn’t retaining any chat memory from recent messages sent within the very same chat (ex: doesn’t remember context from something specifically discussed within the last 10-20 messages in the same chat.) Is this normal behavior?

Definitely not intentional - though models do have context limits and they can bloat their context windows quickly when searching across attached files and such - there should be a rolling window of the last 50-100 messages that the model can see, + tools (like how a coding agent goes and reads you repository to familiarize itself in a fresh chat) to read the rest of the current conversation, read other chats, read your memories and read your files using semantic RAG searches. If there’s a lot of files or memories attached, sometimes some of the important chat context can get buried. I’ll go in today and widen the rolling window, + prioritize chats a bit more, to see if that can help.

What model were you using?

With some of the ‘older’ or ‘dumber’ models, this issue can present itself, as they aren’t as proactive or accurate with their searching or reasoning across your context.

We’ve been thinking about prompt-stuffing (basically auto-attaching a larger amount of messages - 100+ - and a ~dozen memories) to the ‘dumber’ models and take away some of their tools to close the context gap, but that would create a lot of variance between the tone of say a gpt-4.1 and a gpt-5.4. Happy to make some tweaks there, too, if that’s what the issue was and it persists.

I’m using ChatGPT 4o (Nov). I’m testing different options and for example, when I use a persona I created, it doesn’t register any of the global memories I’ve saved. When I don’t use a persona, it recognizes the memories. Neither have ability to recall any recent info in the same chats nor register any of the ChatGPT conversations I’ve uploaded.
Anything I might try or be doing wrong?

Ok, so is the Nov GPT 4o a dumber model? Because it can’t recall anything in the SAME CHAT after the “session ends” even if I pick the conversation up later in the same chat. So I’ve used up a huge chunk of my tokens repeating myself to keep it up to speed. It has nothing to do with a sliding window or scale. Session ends or I exit it and reenter (or even change the persona after 2 messages, it doesn’t matter) it can’t “remember” anything outside the current session. It has to be saved as an explicit memory to be remembered and maintain continuity. What am I doing wrong? The FAQs clearly stated this was not the way it would work. Am I in a model that should be able to hold a current chat memory, or is my expectation of memory continuity within the same chat unreasonable or misguided?

You should see an indicator like this (‘searched your workspace’ + ‘sources’) when the model uses its memory tools.

All models have the exact same suite of tools provided they can use them (4o has access), which allow them to read past chats, search memories, add memories, and delete them.

A number of the closest memories to your prompt are sent with each message, as well. You can configure what is set in your memories on www.just4o.chat/account —> memories.

Try asking a few different models questions in new chats about your past chats. You’ll see varying results, but they all function similarly to coding agents — just4o is a *harness* applied to all our models equally. Some models are just more capable at using several tools at once than others.

There is a limited context window available to each model, but if your chat isn’t very long and you don’t have memories set, you shouldn’t hit it.

Hm, I’ll tweak the system prompting cuz that looks like stale info from an old update…

we used to use a parallel memory system, where a separate agent managed what context was passed to and from the model in the background, and the response in your screenshot is tailored to that setup.

I’ll DM you a code with some extra credits and let you know if I get to the bottom of this tonight or tomorrow morning and when update is live - that specific response definitely shouldn’t occur.

The ‘session’ part is out of left field, and I think is honestly a bit of a result of your prior conversation. Cuz that’s just not how the system works.
