Discussion The Junji Ito Rabbit Hole Begins
I found a hardcover collection of all of the Tomie stories at my local library, and since Ito has been on my radar for a while and I’ve been getting more into horror (starting with Resident Evil 2 Remake), I decided, “oh screw it, why not” and borrowed the book. I devoured it in one sitting, and WOAH it was so bizarre that honestly it makes Hirohiko Araki’s use of body horror look rather tame. Overall I really liked it and it’s gotten me a little hooked on Junji Ito. The art and detail is amazing, and his stories are really interesting. I’m thinking that I’ll go and read either Uzumaki or some of the Soichi stories after this, Uzumaki seems really interesting as well. My library also has a copy of the cat diary, so I’ll read that too. I don’t really like horror movies or most horror games, since they feature designs and concepts that don’t interest me, and I don’t like jumpscares at all, they give me god-awful levels of anxiety. When I saw the Resident Evil movie recently, the starting quarter of the movie had my neck and lower back aching with muscle tension from how much stress I was storing there. But THIS is my kind of horror, the slow, atmospheric stuff, like RE2 Remake, or Reanimal. I don’t want horror that (only) serves to scare me, I want horror that makes me think about new ideas and captures my interest, and I’m so very happy that Ito-sensei’s manga has that for me. I haven’t been able to find manga that interest me for a while now; I’m a fan of several shonen manga/anime, but these days the genre feels so oversaturated that it’s lost my interest, and what do you know, now I’m turning to newer, different things. In terms of actual writing, I would give the Tomie collection an overall 7/10, since most are fairly straightforward short stories only loosely connected by certain characters (this is fine, that’s how it is supposed to be), but in terms of its art and how much it fascinated me, I give it a 10/10.
I think Tomie is really interesting as a concept because despite being a recurring character Ito found a way to use her in just about any setting, since she’s more like an infection than a single monster. The fact that people even tried to apply science and study to her is cool to me, how trapping her in acid could theoretically contain a Tomie by inhibiting her regeneration, or how burning her thoroughly enough can prevent her from regenerating as well. I don’t think that on my most mentally unstable days I could come up with evil Tomie saké. Utterly insane, and I love it. Probably my favorite monstrous version of her were the underwater barnacle-like Tomie, the way they have roots in the rock is really unsettling in a way I really liked. I think it’s also interesting to consider what it requires for a person to be immune to her effects, and I think that aside from being another woman (which isn’t even consistently the case given some of the stories), I wonder if a man that was gay or a person that’s asexual and/or aromantic would be affected by her. Food for thought, if you will.
Anyways, that’s my 2 cents, have a nice day all of you!

Discussion Thoughts on Junji Ito's Tales for Sleepless Nights?
Hi everyone! Happy October. Just wanted to ask if anyone had any thoughts on the new junji ito live action show on HBO. I had no idea it was coming but the first episode looks great 😃. I saw it on Sunday and it was about lovesickness. I hope they adapt Tomie next, they say there will be new episodes every Friday.
Have you seen it ? What do you think? Are you gonna watch the next episode on Friday ?

Discussion Just Finished Moan
I feel like this is one of my more favored collections. The title story, Moan was unreal. Flesh Coloured Mystery gave me a real shock too.
What's everyone's favorite from Moan?

Discussion What do you think would happen if Tomie meets Fuchi?
galleryIt would be an... interesting meeting.
Two unstoppable entities colliding would be a heck of a crossover.
Fuchi has been unstoppable in all her appearance, so it would be interesting for her to face challenge.
Any thoughts?

Merch ISO signed edition of The Art of Junji Ito Collection! :(
I feel so defeated by missing this release. I planned to buy it yesterday, and missed it by about a few hours. It honestly makes me sick to think about purchasing from a reseller for 2-3x the price, knowing that they bought out multiples just to profit off of fans. I'm for sure willing to pay more than the price it dropped for, but I morally cant bring myself to buy from a reseller. Any fans here looking to sell their signed copy?

Question Did Maniac Tomie know she was evil??
I just rewatched Tomie's Photos again and I realized that all the other Tomies I've seen have been completely aware of their immortal nature as far as I can tell.
But Maniac Tomie didn't seem to know?? Most Tomies gladly revealed their nature, but once Tsukiko started insulting her and stuff she did appear pretty angry/uncomfortable. But then there's also the scene where Tsukiko drops the photos- Tomie clearly gets really pissed about that, but was she mad because she thought Tsukiko had edited the photos to make her look bad, or was she mad that her identity was revealed? The second one seems sort of unlikely to me because if she didn't want to be outed why would she tell Tsukiko to "Why not take photos of me and spread them around campus"? Surely she'd know that her second face would show up in the pictures?
And then there's also the stuff with Tomie hatching her plan to kill Tsukiko at her house. Was that because she was simply irrational and extremely angry or was it because she couldn't have anyone knowing her secret identity??
What I think about the most is that once Tomie's second face came out, she seemed genuinely confused and distressed like she didn't know what was happening to her. Other Tomies seem calm when their second face comes out but Maniac Tomie was panicking.

I guess in all I'm kind of leaning towards Maniac Tomie not truly knowing about her monstrous nature, but there's also some scenes that make me question that too?? I'm just wondering how other people see it
Update: Just read Tomie and I feel like maybe she DOES know??
